WEBINARS from MO Beginning Farmers Program (starts MONDAY, Sep 12, 2011)

The Missouri Beginning Farmers Program will continue its monthly webinars in September with a presentation by Debi Kelly, MU SARE State Coordinator, with an overview of the SARE Farmer/Rancher Grant. The webinar will be Monday, September 12th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm with a PowerPoint presentation. There will be two additional opportunities to learn about the SARE Farmer/Rancher Grant from past Missouri farmer recipients. On September 19th hear from Linda Hezel and on September 26th Greg and Nancy Rasmussen will talk about their grant.

"It starts with a distant, unmistakable whine, like a fly in another room you've been too lazy to swat. As the sound grows, I make sure the dog is inside, then grab the camera and head to the pasture.

Planes spraying fungicides have interrupted several quiet weekends on our small farm this summer. They're hard to ignore -- the buzz of their loud propellers is deafening, especially when they fly above our house to turn around. Over the corn fields they soar, sometimes only a few feet about the tips of the tassels, with white mist trailing nefariously behind. Depending on the direction of the breeze, I can often smell the chemicals from inside the house.

I hate every minute of it."

The rise of factory farming is a current, national hot topic.  The environmental consequences of this industry causes "severe degradation, threats to public health, and unimaginable suffering to billions of farm animals." Kansas City is fortunate to have one of the leaders in research of factory farming who is also the founder of Farm Sanctuary, an organization that rescues abused farm animals, present his findings and facts to help us make more educated and aware choices regarding the food we choose to eat.

Hear Farm Sanctuary President and Co-Founder Gene Baur speak at Cleveland Chiropractic College on Thursday, September 22nd from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Assembly Hall at Cleveland Chiropractic College which is located at 10850 Lowell Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66210. This talk is free and open to the public. Gene will also be on hand to sign copies of his national best-seller, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food.
