Subject: Food Safety Action Alert -- Act Now!

National Organic Coalition

ACTION ALERT!

November 16, 2009

FOOD SAFETY PROPOSALS MUST PROTECT FAMILY FARMS AND SUSTAINABLE & ORGANIC AGRICULTURE

CALL MEMBERS OF THE "HELP" COMMITTEE

BEFORE NOVEMBER 18!

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee will mark up S. 510, the Senate version of major food safety legislation already approved by the House of Representatives, next Wednesday, November 18.

The bill focuses on foods regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, not meat and poultry which is regulated by USDA.

The bill includes several key reforms that would put real teeth into federal regulation of large-scale food processing corporations to better protect consumers. However, the bill as written would also do serious harm to family farming, local and regional food systems, conservation and wildlife protection, and organic farming.

The good news is the HELP committee could fix those problems with the adoption of some common sense provisions to retain a crack down on corporate bad actors while not in the same breath erecting dangerous new barriers to the growing healthy food movement based on small and mid-sized family farms, sustainable and organic production methods, and more local and regional food sourcing.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, joined by the National Organic Coalition, have fashioned just such a set of common sense provisions that must be added to S 510.

We urge you to contact your Senator on the HELP Committee (list below) and urge them to support the NSAC/NOC amendments!

It's easy to call. If your Senator is on the HELP Committee (see the list below), please call or fax their office and ask to speak with the aide in charge of food safety issues. You can also call the Capitol Switchboard and ask to be directly connected to your Senator's office: 202-224-3121.

The message is simple. "I am a constituent of Senator___________ and I am calling to ask him/her to support the proposals for amendments to S 510 offered by the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and the National Organic Coalition.

Specifically, ask them to support the following key principles:

§ The bill should provide small and mid-sized family farms that market value-added farm products with training and technical assistance in developing food safety plans for their farms.

§ The bill should direct FDA to narrow the kinds of farm activities subject to FDA control and to base those regulations on sound risk analysis. (Current FDA rules assume, without any scientific evidence or risk analysis, that all farms which undertake any one of a long list of processing, labeling or packaging activities should be regulated.)

§ The bill should direct FDA to ease compliance for organic farmers by integrating the FDA standards with the organic certification rules. FDA compliance should not jeopardize a farmer's ability to be organically certified under USDA's National Organic Program.

§ The bill should insist that FDA food safety standards and guidance that will not contradict federal conservation, environmental, and wildlife standards and practices, and not force the farmer to choose which federal agency to obey and which to reject.

§ Farmers who sell directly to consumers should not be required to keep records and be part of a federal "traceback" system. All other farms should not be required to maintain records electronically or records beyond the first point of sale beyond the farmgate.

For more information on the Senate Food Safety bill, please see NSAC's Talking Points here: http://sustainableagriculture.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/NSAC-S-510-Talking-Points-11-10-09.pdf

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - FRIDAYS in the CROSSROADS

Howdy Friends, Eaters, & Connoisseurs of the Freshest Local Flavors in Town -

I hope you are "GNAWING AT THE BIT" with hunger because this Friday from 4-8 PM @ the BADSEED Farmers Market we will be bursting at the seams with Vendors and all those glorious "fruits of their labor". Dan and I had to illegally usurp the back portion of the building (a part that we don't technically rent) just to make room for all these crazy farmers. Hopefully the landlords won't notice until all your bellies are sufficiently stuffed!!

So, since there are so many Growers & Goodies to mention, I will spare you of my usual "farm up-dates" and "culinary rantings" and get straight to the point:

- THIS WEEK'S ORGANIC OFFERINGS -

NEW VENDOR ALERT (be sure to give her hell and break her in right...) -

*Laura is a wicked-cool lady and a damn good urban grower. She will be decked out with some mouth-watering veggies including "Romaine and Red Summer Crisp Lettuce Heads,Kohlrabi, Broccoli (super tasty, but limited quantities), Hakurei Turnips (they are gorgeous), Shunkyo Radishes (my favorite radish - sort of a sweet/mild, neon pink daikon), Swiss Chard, Sorrel (a wonderful, lemony green - look up sorrel soup recipes and be amazed..., also great for salads or omelets). limited quantities this week, Parsley (italian flat leaved variety, good as an herb or a cooking green). limited quantities this week".

And from your usual gang of gregarious growers:

FESTIVE FALL RECIPES:

Traditional Eggnog
For the most orgasmic EGGNOG imaginable be sure to use local and fresh ingredients that have not been tainted with any chemicals or industrial funk! You will taste a difference. The following recipe is a simple one. I tripled it....you should do the same!

Pumpkin Soup
This recipe comes from the lovely Emily Akins - a die-hard "local foodie" and a girl who has the guilty habit of buying the largest pumpkin at the market! (my kinda gal) She keeps a wonderful blog and features recipes using local foods. Here is a link to her Pumpkin Soup experience using our Japanese Pink Banana Squash:

Arugula Pesto
When the weather turns cold and Basil is no longer an option, Arugula is a peppery and perfectsubstitute. Arugula will be in season until we get a harsh freeze, so take advantage of it now.

WINTER MARKET at GRAND COURT - SATURDAYS - NOV 7 & 14, 2009

WINTER FARMER’S MARKET CELEBRATES
NEW COMMUNITY SPIRIT OPEN HOUSE

Kansas City, MO --- October 2009 -- The Farmer’s Winter Market of Grand Court is excited to announce that a new network of small growers will participate in a Grand Opening Celebration in cooperation with non-profit organizations. The events will be held on November 7 and 14, from 10 am - 1 pm, inside of the Grand Court Retirement Center at 501 W. 107th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. Mapquest link

“With the addition of new farmers and vendors, the Farmer’s Winter Market of Grand Court is able to offer residents just south of Kansas City a larger variety of fresh produce, meats, dairy and desserts” states Steven Quarles, Assistant Manager of Grand Court Farmer’s Market and a multi-generation farmer.

Market Volunteer Janet Hoyer states, “It is refreshing to work with good people who have compassion for the less fortunate. Their unseen individual charity efforts go beyond talk into making real social differences. These include services such as food bank donations, teaching gardening methods to special needs students, revitalizing urban areas for community gardens, helping local homeless people, and facilitating animal adoptions. Supporting America’s small farmers is a good value and investment that nourishes the community.”

Non-profit organizations at the event will include Urban Growth KC, H3 (Houses, Hearts, Hands), PigHeads Animal Rescue and The Cooperation Institute.

Event farmers and vendors include: Schenker Farms, NV Ranch, ShroomHeads Organic Farm, The Organic Garden, Rambler’s Ranch, The Little Muddy Farm, Three Spoons of Sugar, Puddin’ Head Coffee and Wellness World Organics.

Speakers will give free demonstrations on gardening, cooking, and information about local agricultural products. Brief talks about individual organizations will be given. The event will include an Open House time for conversation and questions. Coffee from Puddin’ Heads will be available. Farmer musician Vernon Quarles will provide musical entertainment. A local noted Harpist will provide soft background music for the event.

The Farmer’s Market of Grand Court was founded by Market Manager Tena Bellovich in October 2007 in an effort to provide a forum for small local farmers to sell their goods.

Information and updates can be found at:
www.FarmersMarketGrandCourt.com

(The KC Food Circle is listing this event on a provisional basis because many of the participating food producers are (or were) KCFC Member Growers. We are confident that the products provided at Grand Court will, for the most part, meet KC Food Circle standards.)

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - FRIDAYS in the CROSSROADS

Dearest "Consious Consumers" of Local Flavor -

The air is changing and the leaves are falling. Farmers Markets around town are closing up for the Winter months ahead. This can be a sad time for the "local foodie" or the "proactive parent" who seeks the freshest organic ingredients to bring to the table and feed the ones they love.

Well my famished friends, us crazy farmers at the BADSEED Market can calm those aching bellies. As you know we will be open all Winter long thru January 31st with free-range meats, artisan cheeses, fresh baked breads, baked goods, jams & jellies, winter greens, root vegetables, sweet potatoes, and more!!!

Please take note: our new Winter hours will be
every Friday from 4-8 PM.

It can be tempting during these cold times, due to convenience and hectic schedules, to "ditch" the weekly market and settle for the supermarket instead. But I urge you in these moments to remember the importance of eating well! Food is your medicine. Your body deserves wholesome foods grown with love in your immediate community by a face you have seen and can trust. Wasting your pay check away at Whole Foods Market just doesn't cut it. Industrial Organic Foods are not sprayed with certain pesticides, but they are still unethically grown: exploiting labor, resources, and fossil fuels during transport. By the time they reach your table they are no longer FRESH!! There is something truly remarkable about purchasing food from real people...real hands with real dirt under fingernails...real community & culture. The relationship between farmer and eater is a sacred one. So - LETS EAT!!!

This week we are lucky to have a couple NEW VENDORS including:

Green Dirt Farm - Weston, MO
*Notorious for their artisan Sheep's Cheeses and their pastured lamb cuts, Green Dirt is something Kansas City Eaters can be proud of!! Treat yourselves. You deserve it!!

Wells Family Farms - King City, MO
Everybody loves Kim Wells (she's a doll) with her certified organic, grass-finished BEEF. Happy cows mean happy people, so get your fill of America's heartland at it's finest!!!

From Western Hills Produce - Higginsville, MO
Alice will be sure to wet your whistle with her fresh baked breads (from home-grown and freshly ground wheat), as well as muffins, cup-cakes, & cookies. Canned goodies like fruit jams and jellies will also be available alongside seasonal produce and farm-fresh EGGS!!!

And last but certainly not least BREAD OF LIFE BAKERY will be there with all sorts of breads and sweet treats,Puddin' Head will be bangin' with the world's finest freshly ground organic/fair-trade coffee, and GOATSBEARD GOAT CHEESE will be aging for your pleasure in the big silver fridge!!!

These dangerous chemicals are 'feminizing' all us critters by disrupting our hormone balances. How did we get here? And what can we do about it?
