EPA GREENHOUSE GAS REGULATIONS SCHEDULED TO TAKE EFFECT
Sunday, 2 January 2011

In the wake of Congressional abdication of its responsibility to legislate greenhouse gas targets, and amid calls by some in the energy sector for regulatory predictability and clear market signals, the Obama EPA is moving forward on two plans to curb greenhouse gases from large polluters.

In August of 2010, the EPA set rules for thirteen states to change their clean air plans, and other states to review their plans for EPA compliance - EPA proposes Clean Air Act rules for greenhouse gases. These rules take effect on 2 January 2011, and the Sunflower Coal Plant falls in this category. Furthermore, the agency also announced rules for phase-in during 2011, covering emissions from large power plants and the oil industry. The EPA says it will propose standards for power plants in July 2011, and for refineries in December 2011. EPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson, said they would proceed in a measured and careful way to reduce GHG pollution from power plants and oil refineries that constitute about 40 percent of the GHG pollution in this country - EPA moving to limit greenhouse gases.

But "Big Oil" and "Big Coal" want to keep dirty energy subsidies and keep their prices low, while blocking clean energy subsidies so those prices stay high. When the August rules were announce, Texas joined sixteen other court challenges to EPA’s “tailoring” rules. But on Friday, 10 December, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia turned down a request from utilities, oil refiners and the state of Texas to delay the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions by the Environmental Protection Agency Court rejects oil industry challenge to EPA greenhouse gas regulations. Bruce Nilles, an attorney with the Sierra Club, said "there is no further obstacle to the U.S. starting Jan. 2nd to regulate [large] sources of CO2."

GLYPHOSATE (MONSANTO'S ROUNDUP) MORE TOXIC THAN REGULATORS ADMIT

Argentinian embryologist, Dr. Andres Carrasco, has established a link between glyphosate-based herbicides and deformations in chicken embryos, that resembled the kind of birth defects being reported in Argentina where big agribusinesses depend on glyphosate to treat genetically engineered crops. In August 2010, an angry crowd with ties to local officials and agribusiness bosses attacked Dr. Carrasco when he was trying to report his findings in La Leonesa, a small farm town in Argentina.

Dr. Carrasco's report is not the first to show that glyphosate herbicides like Roundup are more dangerous than government regulators and Monsanto have claimed. According to a spring 2010 report released by the Chaco government, an increase in birth defects and child cancer cases coincided with years of agricultural expansion and increased herbicide use in the province. In September, an international coalition of scientists released a report citing the attack in La Leonesa and human tragedy in Chaco as proof that Roundup and genetically engineered soy crops are dangerous and unsustainable. The report provides a conclusive rebuttal to the industry's claims that spraying mutant crops with chemicals is the best way to feed the world.

And there is a startling side effect in the fields: the rise of new glyphosate resistant weeds commonly called "superweeds." Like the GM corn and soy, these weeds have bred themselves to tolerate Roundup and are invading farms across the country. The mere presence of superweeds and the fact that Monsanto is now paying farmers to spray additional chemicals that are more toxic than Roundup, is evidence of a complete regulatory breakdown. To read more on the human and environmental toxicity of glyphosate, go to War Over Glyphosate (Roundup) Gets Ugly.

BADSEED FARM EXPANDS... (KCMO)

Missouri: URBAVORE seeks Apprentices

New life is emerging on Kansas City’s East Side; a living, breathing organism that both feeds from and provides food for its urban surroundings. BADSEED Farm moved up the food chain, and is taking root on new land and in the new form of URBAVORE.

URBAVORE is presently seeking one part-time apprentice and two volunteer apprentices for the 2011 growing season to aid in the creation of one of the largest and most diverse urban farms in the nation. This season, apprentices are tasked with much more than assisting to produce a crop of vegetables; they must also help to establish infrastructure, perennial fruit plantings, animal pastures and diverse natural habitats on 13 acres of raw land only 8 miles from downtown Kansas City. In exchange for 30 hours of labor weekly, URBAVORE will provide part-time apprentices with free accommodation at BADSEED’s downtown storefront (fully equipped with a commercial kitchen and comfortable amenities), a share of the farm’s bounty, and many opportunities for learning. Apprentices will develop skills in no-till, “beyond-organic” vegetable production, integrated livestock management, orchard planting & tree crop maintenance, windrow composting, direct marketing, food preservation, homesteading skills, and more.

Relevant skills and qualifications in farming and building are desired, but not required. We require part-time apprentices to complete the full season schedule from March 1 through October 31. We can offer volunteer apprentices more flexibility with scheduling and hours.

Part-time Apprentice

Required Hours: 30 field hours per week; 8 market hours per month

Season Commitment: March 1 – October 31

Pay: None.

Compensation: Free Room, Share of Produce, one-on-one (and sometimes two-on-one) training and workshops in diverse farm skills.

How to Apply: Mail resumes to brooke@badseedfarm.com or BADSEED at 1909 McGee St. Kansas City, MO 64108. We will subsequently conduct an interview and field tryout at the farm with qualified applicants in early February. (we can conduct phone interviews with out of town applicants)

Volunteer Apprentice

Required Hours: 15 field hours per week

Season Commitment: Flexible commitment from March – November.

Pay: None.

Compensation: Excellent agricultural skills training and partial share in the farm’s bounty

How to Apply: Mail resumes to brooke@badseedfarm.com or BADSEED at 1909 McGee St. Kansas City, MO 64108. We will subsequently conduct an interview and field tryout at the farm with qualified applicants.

HAVE A HAPPY, DARK AND COLD WINTER SOLSTICE!
Tuesday, 21 December 2010, 5:38pm CST

Yes, it's a colder climate we are striving for, but, more accurately, we need the normal seasonal fluctuations that indicate a healthy ecosphere. Although "global warming" is the scientifically measurable change taking place, "climate disruption" is what most perceive - extreme hot and cold, extreme flood and drought, extreme storms, extreme wild fires and crop failures. During no more than the period of the Cancun Climate Summit, climate disasters have struck all over the globe: flooding in Australia, Venezuela, the Balkans, Columbia, India; wildfires in Israel, Lebanon, Tibet; freak winter storms in Europe and the United States. May your Winter snow be cold and blanketing; may your Summer rain be warm and soaking.

AND a total lunar eclipse, very early Tuesday morning - Tuesday, 21 December 2010, begins 12:33am CST, peak at 1:40am CST, ends at 3:00am CST - Solstice Lunar Eclipse - NASA Science.

ECO RADIO KC ¤ WEEKLY ECOLOGICAL ISSUES RADIO SHOW
Tuesday, 21 December 2010, 12:00noon-1:00pm ¤ on Kansas City Community Radio
Listen at KKFI-FM 90.1, or on web-streaming at http://www.kkfi.org/

On Eco-Radio KC this week, host Reenie Carmack's topic is "Sugar Blues for the Holidays". She and her guests will discuss the detrimental effects of refined sugar on our health and the environment, and how diabetes can be healed naturally.

Also of ecological interest on KKFI this week:
  • On Tuesday at 9:30am, Making Contact will look at oil corporations' legacy of environmental contamination and human rights abuse, and how citizen groups around the world are holding oil businesses accountable, from courtroom battles to government regulation.
  • On Friday at 9:30am, the Bioneers Radio Series presents "Kicking the Habit: Sugar, Fat, and Junk Food Junkies". You do what you eat. Groundbreaking medical research now shows that what we eat is directly connected to how we behave. Maggie Adamek's research for The Sugar Project tracks how the changing American diet has made profound health impacts on behavior, especially among our children. Transforming how we feed ourselves is showing that food is medicine that can change negative behavior dramatically.

U.S. FILES SUIT OVER DEEPWATER HORIZON EXPLOSION AND ECOCIDE
Wednesday, 15 December 2010

The U.S. Department of Justice has sued BP, Anadarko Petroleum (co-owner of well), Transocean (well driller), Triton Asset Leasing, and their insurer, QBE Underwriting Ltd./Lloyd's. for the 20 April 2010 explosion of the Macondo well and subsequent three months of Gulf pollution. Notably, Haliburton was not named in the suit, though their negligent cementing of the well is considered the direct cause of the accident - Justice Department sues BP, others over Gulf oil spill.

The Clean Water Act allows the government to seek civil fines for every drop of oil spilled into the nation's navigable waters, beginning with $1,100 per barrel spilled. If a judge finds the eruption was a result of gross negligence, fines can rise to $4,300 a barrel. Each defendant could face those fines.

KDHE RECOMMENDS ISSUANCE OF AIR QUALITY PERMIT FOR SUNFLOWER COAL PLANT
Thursday, 16 December 2010
(from the KDHE Summary Document)

"The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Bureau of Air (BOA) recommends the issuance of an Air Quality Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) Construction Permit to Sunflower Electric Power Corporation. . ." While KDHE is the issuing authority for a state Air Quality Permit, Kansas still must update their State Implementation Plan (SIP) for conformance with Federal Air Quality Standards. The July 2009 Kansas SIP does not conform with the new EPA standards for CO2 emissions. Therefore, this Permit is pending the update of the Kansas SIP. You can review all documents here - KDHE: Sunflower Electric Permit Application.

It is this procedure for which we assume that EPA Regional Director, Karl Brooks, based his statement that "If KDHE recommends Sunflower be permitted before Jan. 2, EPA will review this initial decision. EPA must scrutinize not just the language of any Sunflower permit, but the whole state decision-making process that produced a permit. Kansans should rest assured that this agency will make sure the rule of law has been faithfully enforced."

The two citizen groups opposing the Sunflower Generating Station, GPACE and the Kansas Sierra Club, issues statements. The GPACE Director, Scott Allegrucci said "We expect that this decision will receive additional review on two fronts: >From federal regulators responsible for ensuring that the permit review process was conducted properly and in a manner that protects human health and the environment; and from Kansas citizens who may turn to the courts to right this regulatory wrong." And Stephanie Cole of the Kansas Sierra Club said "Thousands of people got involved in the permitting process with a belief that their input would be fairly considered, and it should have been. Accelerating the process to permit a coal plant for an out-of-state utility, at the expense of Kansans, is inexcusable." For more info go to GPACE and Sierra Club - Kansas Chapter.

This Friday at the BADSEED "Happy Holiday" Farmers Market Fiesta from 4-8 PM I will be raffling off a delicious FARM BASKET full of local/organic delights including free-range meats, artisan sheep's milk cheese, gourmet mushrooms, eggs, organic produce, winter squash, micro-roasted coffee, rustic bread, baked goods, and more.......(compliments of your oh so dedicated farmers that you so graciously support week after week). This is our way of saying Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa or plain old THANK YOU for a wonderful season. We make a living "in the dirt" and it aint easy. Sometimes "dirt" is all you have to show for it!! But, if it wasn't for your loyal patronage, all us farmers would have thrown in the towel long ago. Keep eatin' and we'll keep on growin'!

Okay, now for the details:

FUNKY FARM BASKET RAFFLE!!
Drawing occurs promptly at 6 PM (Mr. and Mrs. Claus will do the honors)
Come a bit early to get your name in the running!
OR respond to this e-mail and I will go ahead and put your name in the hat, however you must be present to win the basket so please show up!!

Other festivities will include:

Irish Coffee compliments of the BADSEED's. That's right.....get tipsy with the farmers! I will provide Irish Whiskey, organic sugar, and whipped Shatto cream so you can "dress up" your Puddin' Head Coffee. YUM!! I will also provide a few bottles of local white and red wine. Feel free to bring contributions to the bar, if you'd like. Last year you "booze hounds" tore through that whiskey like there was no tomorrow. I didn't know you "local foodies" had it in ya! I will attempt to be better prepared this Friday, but the pocket book can only handle so much. (years down the line, when our orchard is in full swing, we will provide homemade Apple Brandy.....mmmmmm).

Holiday Recipe Round-Up
Local Foods should champion any meal especially your Holiday Feast!! Here are a few suggestions based on in-season ingredients that can be found at the BADSEED Market this Friday:

I am an eggnog fiend and this recipe is simply to die for! Ever since I got laying hens I have been in "eggnog heaven". This is nothing like the store bought stuff and it will leave your guests screaming for more (with silly eggnog mustaches adorning their eggnog crazed faces). Use free-range eggs from PJ's Mushroom Farm and local dairy products from Shatto or Green Hills Harvest. Triple this recipe for larger holiday gatherings. It is excellent "virgin" and even better "spiked". **I substitute half & half for the heavy whipping cream. I have tried it both ways, and the half & half makes a lighter, more pleasing nog in my opinion. However, either way is great. Go wild.

I made a chestnut stuffing for Thanksgiving featuring fresh, organic chestnuts from Chestnut Charlie. It was off the radar. In addition to roasted chestnuts, I used a few ingredients from my field including leeks, fennel, and apples. I loosely followed the recipe I have included from Whole Foods which features cranberries and shallots. The point is - you can IMPROVISE! The chestnuts are the main ingredient that cannot be compromised, but you can throw in whatever you happen to have lying around the kitchen or whatever is in season. Lots of herbs and high quality Shatto butter make a huge difference. ** I use a combo of day old Roaring River sourdough bread and Bread of Life wheat bread. Farm to Market baguettes work great as well. **Vegetable broth can be substituted for chicken broth.

This divine recipe comes from my favorite "local foodie" and "farmers market junkie" - the lovely Emily Akins. Check out this festive holiday cake on her blog featuring Heartland Mill flour. I cannot stress enough the importance of using high-quality flour in your breads and baked goods. It makes a HUGE difference. Heartland Mill artisan flours are certified organic, locally grown, and locally milled. It is used by the finest midwest bakeries including Fervere at 17th and Summit. BADSEED is the only retail outlet in KC where you can purchase this fine flour.

Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Fried Sage and Shaved Chestnuts -
I think this is a great addition to your Holiday Feast especially if you have "anti-turkey" vegetarians at the table! The addition of ricotta cheese adds a certain lightness and fluffiness to your gnocchi, or fresh Italian dumplings. **Recipe attached.
