2011-06-24 ~ This Friday @ the BADSEED Farmers Market!!

Dearest Eaters & Die-Hard Local Foodies -

Listen Up: THE SUPERMARKET WILL SUCK OUT YOUR SOUL & LEAVE YOUR TASTE BUDS UNFULFILLED.  Let your local farmers HEAL YOU FROM THE INSIDE OUT one bite at a time.  TRUE SALVATION in the form of "earthly delights" and "heavenly eats" are but a Farmers Market away.  BADSEED will salve the soul and tame those grumbling bellies this Friday from 4-9 pm with homegrown goodness yanked straight from the midwestern dirt!

Remember, this is "walmart one stop shopping" for the conscious consumer.  Load up on heirloom vegetables, mean greens, grass-fed lamb/beef/pork and poultry, free-range brown eggs, artisan cheese, raw honey, local flour, and more.  An ethical-alternative FOOD CULTURE does exist!  BUT if you don't swallow it, us Farmers cannot continue to produce it.  Farmers and Eaters must work together to support one another.  We live to FEED, and you live to EAT!  So, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR???
*******************************************************************************************************

Yeah, yeah....you are probably wondering what's with the local food sermon??  I don't normally get quite as "preachy".  The truth of the matter is that this worn-out farmer has a bit of a bone to pick.  I'll try to make it short and sweet!

Basically, the BADSEED Farmers Market is in a major SLUMP!!!  Despite winning Farmers Market of the Year (in the entire state of Missouri) and receiving considerable press recently for our efforts with URBAVORE & our City-Wide Composting Program, the market is slower than it's been in two years!  My farmers are getting grumpy, and as for myself (a farmer/vendor AND the market manager), I am throwing my hands in the air wondering what more I can do!  What happened to our beloved customers????  I know you guys (all 2000 of you) still read the e-mails.  (I only get about 1000 responses a week!!).  BUT week after week my farmers are going home with way too much product.....(gorgeous fruits and veggies that deserve a home in YOUR BELLY...not in their compost pile).  I cannot "guilt" you into supporting local food & that is not my intention.  However, it is sooooo important to remember that BADSEED is truly a "grass-roots" effort made possible by a hard-working community of farmers & eaters who believe in a wholesome alternative to Industrial Food & Factory Farming.  Despite the intentions of those who sow the seeds, that alternative is completely dependent on the consumers.  If we grow it, and you don't eat it...guess what?......we cannot afford to keep growing it!  The supermarket will always be there.  BADSEED may not.  Come out this Friday.  Show us some LOVE.  We miss you!!!!

On the Baby Front -
Yes, I know.....(many of you are more interested in hearing about that brand new baby that I grew, than the veggies that I grow!!).  So, for the sake of humoring all those "baby lovers" I will just say a few things about sweet little Percival James Heryer who is officially two weeks old today!!

He's doing splendidly!  His eyes are the color of a stormy sea, his skin is pink and supple, and he smells like milk & honey.  I am IN LOVE.  However, infatuation doesn't replace sheer fatigue.  After 27 hours of labor my body is beat-up and it will be tough getting back out to the field.  It's funny though - I thought compared to my insane farm schedule, motherhood would be a breeze.  However, I got more done around the house and in the office while working 12 hours a day in the field than I do now - at home all day long with little Mr. James.  He is quite demanding!  But, I shouldn't complain.  Poor Farmer Dan has the shorter end of the stick.  He never sees his son!  To keep the farm afloat in my absence, he is pulling ridiculous hours.  It's always "do or die" around here.  Father's Day was the first full day he actually got to spend with Percy.  They are incredible together!  If you don't believe me, check out the picture of the two of them.  Two peas in a pod.....

Sexy Veggie of the Week

This week's Runner-Up is the oooh so voluptuous, incredibly creamy GOLD BALL TURNIP.
  This buxom babe is queen of the root vegetables.  She dominates the dirt with her big, buttery body and gigantic greens.  This exceptional gourmet cooking turnip originated in Northern Europe in the 1850's.  These 3-4 inch roots are perfectly shaped amber globes with a mild & creamy golden flesh and a buttery flavor.  Roast em' with olive oil and herbs, cream em' with milk and honey, or mash em' with loads of garlic!  Whatever your do, COOK THESE BABIES UP!  Our crop is absolutely bangin' right now!  We will have loads of these golden beauties for the next few weeks.  They store for months so go WILD!  FYI - Turnips are the new Beet!!!

This week's Grand-Prize-Winner is none other than the
FREAKING FABULOUS FRESH FAVA BEAN
.
All over the globe, in cultures new and old, Fava Beans or Broad Beans are celebrated.  America is a little slow to catch onto the craze!!  These large, buttery beans with a delightful nutty flavor can be easily removed from their green, leathery pods and eaten fresh in a variety of dishes.  In China they are fried (causing the skin to split open) then salted & spiced producing a savory and crunchy snack!  In Egypt they are prepared into a hummus-like dip by taking the mashed, cooked beans and adding oil, garlic, lemon, salt and cumin and serving it with thick slices of bread.  In Greece they are eaten in a stew combined with artichokes.  In Portugal, they are made into a Christmas Cake!  And in the Netherlands, the fresh beans are sauteed with butter and savory....the green pods saved as their velvety insides are thought to cure warts when rubbed!!  This is a specialty item that you cannot find at many Farmers Markets in the KC area.  Last week we had the mother-load; this week we will have limited quantities.  So come early for this ultra sexy/ultra versatile bean and load up!

SEXY Photos are attached.  You know the drill - print them out, blow them up, and plaster them all over the men's room!

KC URBAN FARMS & GARDENS TOUR - PRE-TOUR WORKSHOPS TODAY! ~~ MONDAY, JUNE 20th 2011

[Apologies for the flurry of emails during the Urban Farms & Gardens Tour, we will resume irregular communication after the 26th]

The Urban Farms & Gardens Tour is off to a great start. We have had several wonderful events this weekend and are ready to roll out more workshops, films and food events this week!
Get Your Grow On with workshops on Monday

Food production can play a critical role in creating a healthy environment. In Plant for the Future: Eco Garden/Farm Design 101, the EPA will share ways in which food production can control erosion, effectively manage water and energy, and maintain healthy soil.

Heidi VanPelt-Belle of FUD Restaurant, an advocate of fresh, local food, offers a hands-on class on how to prepare raw, vegan meals - Eat the Rainbow: Eating Color for Health 101

Grow the Good: Faith Based Gardens 101 is hosted by three community churches who are all doing some type of farming or gardening project. Leaders will share their experiences and offer guidance to help you get growing in your faith-based community.

And, all week long, join us in supporting restaurants that support local growers. Each night a few restaurants will donate 10% of their proceeds to Cultivate Kansas City.

On Monday Eat Out Local at Eden Alley Vegetarian Cafe and Succotash (lunch only for both) to support your local food system!

 See our website for all event details for the coming ten days!

We hope you will take the time to see what will be offered during this 12-day celebration of growing and eating fresh, healthy food in our city!

Tickets and event registration are now available online.

HUMAN-POWERED AGRICULTURE - LAWRENCE, KS (Late-June HARVEST EVENT)

From: Skyler sqirrelpig5000 (a) yahoo . com
~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello everyone, I'd like to invite you to take part in Tim Coughenour's annual small scale wheat harvest (Lawrence, KS). This is a chance for you to learn traditional human scale grain raising techniques. Tim Coughenour has been growing 95% + of his own food for many years. He also lives entirely without fossil fuel inputs (electricity, natural gas, city water, automobiles) which might make him the most sustainable person in Lawrence! Annually the wheat harvest starts as early as the 23rd of June to as late as the 30th, depending on the weather.
Tim's farm/
garden is located at the second to last driveway on the  north side of the street of the 800 block of Oak Street in North Lawrence. There is
a small sign that reads "produce for sale".
Wheat harvest can take as long as 3 consecutive afternoons and evenings or as little as one. Work starts at 4pm and goes till sundown. work consists of cutting wheat heads with a hand sickles and transporting it to a barn while others thresh with flails on threshing floors. Eric Farnsworth will also be bringing his pedal power wheat thresher.
There is plenty of work for kids too.
If you wish to participate you will need to bring all the water you need to drink as there is no water at this site. A snack would be good.   Ideally you should have a longs sleeves white shirt, a handkerchief or dust mask, shoes not sandals, and perhaps long pants. If you have a hand sickle [scythe] (think Soviet flag) bring that
too.
Riding your bike will be appreciated. If you park a car, please do so on the north side of Oak st.
Since I do not yet know the precise date of harvest it would be best if you send me an email with your name, email and phone number and I will let you know when it starts.
Hope to see you there,
     Skyler Adamson
