BADSEED's Funkalicious Friday FARMERS' MARKET at 1909 McGee (E. Crossroads, KCMO) 4p-9p

Dearest Eaters -

I wanna give a great big THANK YOU to those of you who graced us with your presence this past Saturday at URBAVORE's Season Opener.  It was a grand old time.  The sun was shining, the beer was flowing, and the chickens were crowing!!!
URBAVORE Farmstand will now be open every Saturday from 2-6 pm.  I cannot promise beer and food, but I CAN promise loads of luscious produce, farm tours, FREE Kitchen Compost Pails, and good company in the form of ME & Mr. Percival James.  (Farmer Dan would love to be there, but he'll be tied up hustling veggies every Saturday at the historic City Market).  Again, THANKS for taking the time to visit our farm and experience first-hand all that urban agriculture has to offer KC.  Without your support, we couldn't do this!!  We live to feed; thanks for eating.

Speaking of "feeding", that's exactly what we are prepared to do this Friday at the BADSEED "Funky" Farmers' Market from 4-9 pm.  We have some delectable new offerings on the menu including FRESH ITALIAN FENNEL, not to mention our usual assortment of heirloom produce, grass fed meats, free-range eggs, rustic breads, RAW HONEY, local flour, and more.  Take note - this will be the LAST WEEK forFRESH FAVA BEANS and (most likely) SUGAR SNAP PEAS.  Leaf Lettuce is also on it's way out, so get your fix of "spring veggies" and get ready for sizzling summer fruits that will hit the market tables soon.

In conclusion, stay out of the supermarket this week (!!) and pay a visit to your gregarious gang of growers instead.  As an eater, you exercise your politics, ethics, and compassion with each & every bite you take.  As a farmer, I decide the "future of food" with each and every seed I sow.

TOGETHER we can create an alternative food culture that is just, righteous, and delicious.  TOGETHER we can create a food culture that celebrates each an every living creature.  TOGETHER we can revitalizes the soil, our communities, and our very own bellies.

Join the Food Revolution this Friday.  See you there.

EATER MEETS FARMER: "Why Local?"

The KCFC is pleased to welcome our new guest blogger Stephen Flanery and his series entitled Eater Meets Farmer. Stephen is a human resources extraordinaire by day and a gardener by night. He is a Kansas City native, a cat lover, and an avid reader of Edwin Way Teale. Join us periodically as Stephen explores what it means to eat local and organic.

by Stephen Flanery

Local food has become such a trend that the real reasons for eating locally occasionally get lost. Consider this: "a dollar spent at a local business turns over seven times in that community; while the same dollar spent at a box store or chain only turns over 2.5 times." And then there’s this: according to Worldwatch Institute, our food travels an average of 1,500 miles from farm to table. I live in the heart of the Midwest, surrounded by prime farmland, so why shouldn’t my food come from farms near Kansas City?

Fortunately, Kansas City has several organic markets right here in the metro area. And there are nearly 80 KCFC member growers, offering everything from chestnuts to beef to jams. These are farmers all within range of Kansas City who are committed to offering locally and ethically grown products.

By shopping at one of these farmers’ markets or joining a CSA with a local farmer, my dollars stay right here in Kansas City. Additionally, by dining at one of the many KC area restaurants that offers local and organic menu options, I support both local businesses and local farmers.

I guarantee if you visit your nearest farmers’ market and peruse the gorgeous displays of produce, you’ll have a hard time returning to the tasteless grocery store tomatoes. By purchasing locally grown food, I support my neighbors, I reduce my food miles, and I know exactly what I’m eating.

Next time I’ll ask “why organic?” In the mean time, share some of your favorite restaurants in KC that support local farmers.

This Weekend at Brookside Farmers' Market

This weekend is the annual Hospital Hill run in Kansas City. While we'll get a chance to cheer on racers in Brookside, it shouldn't disrupt traffic to and from the market too much. Streets and lanes immediately surrounding our block will be open. You can visit the website and click on "Course Notification here" to see a map of street and road closures. If you're coming from the north or south Wornall is open, as is 63rd and Meyer to Brookside Blvd. for those coming from the west. If you're coming from the east you may have to jog a little south before heading over. But again, streets and lanes immediately surrounding our block are open!

Steve Mann and the Sweet Potato Project will be on site with orders and Dave Wendler will be playing tunes.

What you'll see at market this Saturday 8am - 1pm on the southeast corner of 63rd St and Wornall Rd …

arugula, beets, black raspberries, blueberries, bok choy, broccoli, broccolini, cabbage, CARROTS, cauliflower, chard, cookbooks, eggs, fennel, garlic scapes, green onions, greens, insect repellant, KALE, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, microgreens, garlic, onions, PEAS, pink lillies, potatoes, radishes, rhubarb, scallions, shallots, spinach, strawberries, sugar scrubs, sunflowers, sunscreen, tomato hanging basket, tomatoes, turnips
