Farmers' Community Market at Brookside ~ SATURDAYS ~ 8am-1pm

CHILDRENS’ FESTIVAL THIS WEEK AT THE MARKET!

Stop by at 9 am for the Stone Lion Theatre performance of Bubba & Trixie, a story of a caterpillar and lady bug in the garden, written by local author Lisa Campbell Ernst.

Stan Slaughter, Eco-Troubadour, is the Heartland's best known and most honored environmental educator. Since 1987 he has pioneered innovative environmental programs to educate and increase awareness of environmental issues. Stan has traveled to more than 25 states and performed for about 300,000 children and their teachers. His byline is "Seeds for Sustainable Culture". He works tirelessly to develop environmental literacy and help people appreciate the natural world.

Stan will be performing half-hour sets of music for the children at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30 and 1:30. In between he will be giving worm-composting demonstrations.

We welcome back Border Star Montessori PTA! Paula Busser PTA president and Tina Langston, principle of Border Star will be back in “Childrens’ Corner” with eco-projects for our young ones. They will have a crown-making table, a dough sculpting table and maybe a bell-pepper stamping table!

We are pleased to announce the arrival of NUTRESSANT, our new vendors this Saturday! John and Sandy bring us this special bath and body line that is nature friendly, vegan and organic. Since our skin absorbs 60% of what we put on it, they are as dedicated to keeping the outsides of us pure and toxin-free as our farmers are about the inside. The product line features bar soap, liquid soap, body butter, In-Shower Moisturizer, deodorant, toothpaste, lip balm, shampoo. Pomade and laundry wash.

Green Dirt Farm
Dirt Lover and Woolly Rind will be back this week! We will also have a
new, very buttery, batch of Prairie Tomme and another fresh batch of
ricotta. Fresh farmstead ricotta is an ephemeral cheese. It is best eaten
within just a few days of making it. So, don't hold on to it- eat it up!
And come get some more this Saturday.
We will also have our usual cuts of lamb and SAUSAGE.
See you at the market.

From Blue Door:

Sweeeeeet.... peppers. :) The italian fryers are still ripening like mad. These rich flavored beauties are my favorite vegetable this summer and I'm happy to share. Roast'em, grill'em, fry'em or just eat'em raw.

Also bountiful this week is the okra, which I recently discovered is stellar when roasted whole. Other stars of the week: japanese eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, yellow and blue potatoes and kale. And yes, I will have a few more mini-melons.

Good stuff! See you Saturday.

- Laura

From Bread of Life - Hi Brookside Market Goers,

Last week we saw Bryce and Lili off at the airport. We sure miss them when they leave and they have a hard time leaving here.
I want to thank everyone that stopped by and visited the little redheaded salesman. Bryce loves to be at the market and it is one of highlights of their visit to our farm. Bryce and Lili love to help at the bakery and create a market "special".I look forward to seeing what they come up with next year.
This week we will have market fresh peppers, and squash added to our farm egg burritos. Add a cup of Puddin' Head coffee for a wonderful morning break.
Luke and Chris will have our usual breads, jams, granolas, and cookies (Lemon Balm butter and Espresso Chocolate chip are yummy cookies to try.)
See you Saturday,
Luke Chris and Kathy

From KCCUA’s Community Farm

We’ll bring all the usuals to market this week including some lovely red sweet peppers and plenty of nice tomatoes. It looks like the weather has sped up the ripening of the winter squash, so we’ll bring a few spaghetti squash and some carnival. The basil is perfect this year and there is still garlic left, so get your pesto made now!

We thank you so much for coming out to market this and every week of the season. Our field crew has worked so hard to keep up and keep at the crops. We’re saying good-bye Kat this week. She’s been with us since February and has proven herself in many ways many times. She’s off to San Francisco to see what’s to see. Best of luck Kat and thanks so much!

Bear Creek Farms

I can't believe we are half way through August and some mornings, before the heat soars, I swear I feel a tiny touch of fall in the air. Bring it on!!

This week at market we'll have shiny purple eggplant, beautiful okra, colorful peppers, crisp cool cabbage, onions, yellow and purple potatoes, yummy heirloom tomatoes and whatever else we might find.

Hope to see you all at market Saturday. Stay cool!

Robbins and Jim

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - A MUST ON FRIDAYS IN THE CROSSROADS

Glorious Eaters and Conscious Consumers -

I know it is HOT....But let's cool down this Friday at the BADSEED Farmers Market from 4-9 PM with an icy treat :

Fresher than Fresh Snow Cones !!!

The lovely Lindsay Laricks (queen of the adult snow cone) will be at BADSEED this Friday shavin' up ice like you've never tasted before. Lindsay uses 100% all-natural ingredients without and artifical colors and flavors to create the wildest ice around. Maybe you've seen her around town in her groovy vintage trailer serving up snow cones dowsed in her signature syrups with flavors like "coconut curry", "blackberry lavender", "banana cardamom", "green tea pear", and "watermelon basil"......just to name a few. Well, this week she's embraced her inner "local foodie" and teamed up with BADSEED to create a snow cone straight from the farm!

Farm Fresh Challenge: I gave Lindsay a basket of goodies from my farm consisting of Green Sour Apples, Bronze Fennel, Thai Basil,Lemon Basil, and Summer Savory. Lindsay must concoct a local/organic snow-cone using these ingredients that will blow your farm-fresh mind. (I thought about giving her a big basket of eggplant instead, but I figured I was the only nut-ball that would enjoy an eggplant flavored snow cone.....maybe next time). Don't miss out. LIVE NUDE VEGETABLES & SNOW CONES only at the BADSEED!!!!!

***Sexy Veggie of the Week***
This week's runner-up is truly a phenomenon........ ORGANIC SWEET CORN!!!! OK, OK....don't get too excited. Organic sweet corn might as well be an oxymoron, therefore quantities are limited. Most organic growers don't even bother cropping corn due to the fact that these "kerneled kittens" are prone to outrageous pest pressure both from the insect world and the furry critter world. Beyond that, corn is a very heavy feeder and us, organic growers, are not dowsing our dirt in chemical fertilizer so alas...our ears are kinda on the small side. Other quirks include nibbled tips and the occasional worm (extra protein, right?). BUT, all that aside, chemical free corn tastes divine and is a real treat. Consider yourself one lucky duck if you manage to stash away a few ears in your market bag. One customer of mine lamented that he hadn't eaten sweet corn in over three years!! Despite his efforts, he couldn't find it organically-grown at any local market. Then he moved to Kansas City and (low and behold) sweet corn is back on the menu thanks to a few freakazoid organic farmers who think it is worth the hassle for that lovely tassle. Keep your eyes peeled for sweet corn during the next few weeks from BADSEED Farm, JJ Farms, and Bigg Blue Farm. All of us will have a little here and there, but come early!! Be sure to check out our "white" sweet corn in a mouth-watering variety by the name of "Silver Queen". My new favorite......

This week's grand-prize-winner (drum roll please....) is the absolutely angelic and juicy WHITE TOMESOL HEIRLOOM TOMATO!!! These sweet, rich, cream-colored fruits simply melt in your mouth as the juice runs down your chin and brings tears to your eyes. White tomatoes in general are considered to be very mild and sweet due to their low acidity. Eat these luscious ladies fresh, thickly sliced, and paired with tangy, fresh Chevre from Goatsbeard Farm or go wild with an all white heirloom tomato sauce that will absolutely make your head spin. However you slice em' and dice em', these fragrant beauties are sure to please.

Pictures are attached. You know the drill - print them out, blow them up, & plaster them all over the men's room!!

Strange Brew: Kombucha “mushroom” Tea

*Tuesday, August 31, 7-8:30 pm at the BADSEED Market, 1909 McGee, KCMO, 64108

Join BADSEED Farmer, Brooke Salvaggio, in a relaxing evening sipping “brew” and learning the art and magic of making Kombucha tea.

Students will take home their very own Kombucha culture and written instructions for care and brewing techniques.

*If taken good care of, your Kombucha “mushroom” will accompany you on life’s many journeys and spawn “kombucha babies” to give to your friends!!
