GREEN YOUR EARS OUT... KKFI 90.1 FM - KC's Community Radio

(FROM MIKE MURPHY at KKFI

Friend,
KKFI is certainly a green station.  Check out Eco-Radio KC, for example Monday evening at six.  John Kurmann will be looking at local efforts to clean up our creeks, steams, rivers, and lakes, as well as the efforts to thwart the construction of the new coal-fired power plant in western Kansas.  (By the way, there is an orange ozone alert today, so please don't gas up, mow your lawn, or drive unnecessarily today, as that pollution will be trapped in our atmosphere today, and we'll all end up inhaling it.)  (PODCAST AVAILABLE AT

I'll be filling in for Diana Linn on Your Tuesday Morning Buzz from six to eight, and I'll I've got some great Mikana music picked out for you, including Truckstop Honeymoon, Kasey Rausch, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Band, David Gans, Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler, The Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, and others.  Dr Arjun Makhinjani is in Takoma Park, Maryland.

Tuesday at 9am, on If You Love This PlanetDr. HelenCaldicott's guest is Arjun Makhjani, the President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research  , A recognized authority on energy issues, Dr. Makhijani is the author and co-author of numerous reports and books on energy and environment related issues.  He was the principal author of the first study of the energy efficiency potential of the US economy published in 1971. Recently, he co- authored Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free: A Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy
This was a classic example of the American Dream: An immigrant group working hard, raising families and making an effort  to assimilate and make contributions to their new home country.  That all changed following the Imperial Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Soon after that event President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942 authorizing the internment of all the 110,000 Japanese living on the west coast.  This extraordinary act of wartime hysteria and racism would only be officially acknowledged when President Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 which essentially provided $20,000 to surviving detainees or their heirs totaling 1.6 billion dollars.

On the Pacifica Radio Archives' From the Vault, Wednesday morning at five, hear history once again as this phenomenal recording documents Japanese Americans and their families from 1959 talking about family life before the war and how the internment process changed their lives forever.  I've been so busy preparing for Tuesday's Morning Buzz, I'm not sure what I'm doing Wednesday.  Any suggestions?  Perhaps, some eco-friendly music is in order.  What do you think?   Hear the legend of the Missouri Monster (MoMo) on From Ark to Microchip, Wednesday at 12:30pm

The Church of Earthalujah Revival series is comprised of 22 weekly "Church services" held at Theater 80 in New York City and featured on Sprouts, Thursday morning at nine.  In this service Reverend Billy and the Choir saints soon-to-be-jailed environmental activist Tim Dechristopher, also known asBidder 70 for bidding on and winning numerous leases on federal lands in order to save them from oil and natural gas drilling. I'm looking forward to this, becaseu Tim is a personal hero of mine.

Global warming is no longer a fear for the future. It's threatening human civilization, now. But a good portion of humanity doesn't seem that concerned. On Making Contact, at 9:30am, , part 2 of a special 2 part series produced by Brian Edwards-Tiekert on climate change that is happening, the political response that isn't, and the people trying to break the gridlock.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is pushing to lift the moratorium on natural gas drilling, known as hydraulic fracturing in New York State. Hydro-fracking as its called is in many opinions an environmentally reckless technique to extract natural gas from shale. While the lifting of the moratorium is still months away, it comes despite the massive efforts from environmental and community groups in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania who have protected the Marcellus Shale watershed.  Hear about the legal struggle on Law and Disorder, Thursday at noon.

Shots in the Night Productions hit the Thursday Night Special at seven,  This should be a great evening of fun.  Where community theatre meets community radio
On Bioneers, Friday morning at 9:30am, the 2011 series continues with Upscaling Goodness:  Treehuggers, Earth Accupuncture and Community Forests.  The Grateful Dead Hour, heard on 90.1FM every Friday at 11pm, kicks off a several week run of a 1989 Pittsburg show
Ruthie Foster will be featured on Beale Street Caravan at 7am on Saturday.

Susan Tower is one person who is in touch with the planet in a very profound way.  Susan is a local artist who travels to sacred sites to paint them and then runs away before she is arrested for defacing sacred sites.  No, I'm just kidding.  When I refer to painting sacred sites, I of course mean capturing them on canvas.  Her work from her trip to Stonehenge is currently on display at Stone Spirit Lodge on Westport Road.  Hear her fascinating story on Every Woman, Saturday at 3pm.
Stay tuned,

Fellow Foodies and Farm-Fresh Junkies -

THE HEAT IS ON.....and sizzling summer fruits are soon to follow. Turnips & leafy greens are on their way out and juicy heirloom tomatoes, voluptuous peppers, & orgasmic eggplant are on their way in. Tomatoes may take another week or more to really hit the market tables (due to a very cold spring), but other HOT HOT veggies will be in full effect this Friday. JJ Farms has a beautiful selection of freshly dug potatoes, Purple Beauty sweet peppers, Japanese eggplant, and gorgeous red onions plucked fresh from the dirt. Bigg Blue Farm is busting at the seams with sexy summer squash, cool cucumbers, and organic cabbages the size of Cleveland!! As for Lew of Herb"n"Gardener, he's still keepin' it real with your old time favorites like kale and swiss chard not to mention the coveted French Filet Bean! At URBAVORE, Farmer Brooke & Farmer Dan will have their usual "green" madness, an uncanny selection of Bodacious BEETS as well as some new additions - freshly pulled GARLIC (melts in your mouth) and luscious King Richard LEEKS! If LIVE NUDE VEGETABLES aren't your thang.....stuff your face with free-range eggs, grass-fed beef & lamb, all natural pork, RAW honey, artisan sheep's milk cheese, rustic baked breads, micro-brewed herbal elixirs......and MORE. It all goes down this Friday from 4-9 PM at the BADSEED Funky Farmers' Market.

FIREWORKS on the (urban) Farm....

I sure hope all of you had a fantastic 4th of July. Farmer Dan and I took it easy for a change and spent time snuggling and kissing our new baby (trying not to think about the insane amount of work needing to be done in the field!!). We did venture out to the farm around dusk to put the animals up for the night, chase off devilish deer, and toast to our many successes and failures with a glass of wine. Once the night set in, the pastoral setting turned into a scene from "Apocalypse Now"! As you know, our farm is a 13.5 acre urban oasis just 5 miles east of the Plaza off Blue Parkway. Our land sits high allowing us a radical view of downtown. However, I never understood just how high until I was experiencing loud & colorful explosions in the sky all around me.....there were fireworks encompassing us as far as the eye could see!! There we sat, completely in awe, as we watched professional fireworks displays in Raytown, Overland Park, South KC, downtown KC, and KCK. To add to the surreal nature of the moment, the neighborhood was putting on a fireworks display of their own. Here in East KC, folks really know how to party and apparently "pyrotechnics" is their specialty. These residential fireworks were just as "hyphy" as the real ones so while the big stuff was happening far away, the "ghetto works" were happening in the immediate vicinity. It was absolutely wild. Urban agriculture never fails to shock me!! There is something about the juxtaposition of a farm in the city that is truly magical.
As for little Percy James...
