The 2011 Growing Growers workshop series will be starting up soon.

Please help us spread the word!

Growing Growers workshops are for aspiring or current growers/farmers, and are a great way to learn about sustainable market farming topics from farmers, extension professionals, and other experts. Most workshops include a farm tour where participants can see concepts in action and learn how different farms handle the challenges of farming. Workshops change location monthly to allow for tours of multiple farms. All are welcome, regardless of experience level.

The first three workshops of the season will be:

GrowingGrowers'
Farmers Listserv

Connecting Farmers-Volunteers-Workers-Community Members

Our listserv for Kansas City area food producers encourages and supports:

  • Peer-to-Peer information sharing

  • Bulk purchases of supplies, seeds, etc.

  • Other communications to help local growers be more effective and informed.

For example, a grower could post a question to other growers “Do any of you have suggestions for managing cucumber beetles on summer squash?” or “I’m interested in buying a 50 gallon drum of horticultural vinegar. Would anyone like to split this order with me?” or “I have huge quantities of winter squash that I won’t be able to sell at my farmers’ markets. Does anyone have any ideas on where I could sell them?"

To sign up for the listserv:

Email: growers (a) ksu . edu with the following information:

Your name

The name of your farm
Address

City

State

Zip

Email address

Type of operation (for example, I grow tree fruits and vegetables)

Interested farm workers, volunteers and community members can email growers (a) ksu . edu if you would like to have something sent to the listserv of local growers. For example, this could be used if:

  • You have the month of August off from work and want to spend it volunteering on a local farm, or

  • You are looking for land to rent to start your own farming operation, or

  • You have land available for rent to an organic grower, or

  • You are looking for paid work on a local farm.

The Program Staff will determine what emails will be forwarded onto the listserv.
