Funky First-Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - FRIDAYS in the CROSSROADS

Dearest Supporters,

The most generous folks at the City have shown mercy on our little organic farm. In meeting with various department heads last week, we were instructed that we might operate within the boundaries of code if we discontinue hosting apprentices & volunteers on our farm, as well as our weekly on-farm CSA pickup. These activities (two to three volunteers per week and four CSA members) push our business into the commercial realm.

These two violations may seem petty, or somewhat of a stretch. But when you consider that only a week ago we had five violations stacked against us and were on the verge of having our operation shut-down all together, we’re content with the result for the time being. So we will operate under these guidelines to finish our season.

Do not misunderstand me: this is a victory. If we had not fought the city on these violations, we would have been cited on each count. Urban farming in Kansas City would be technically illegal. We have reversed the political pressure that was leveraged against us, and have found many supporters within City Hall with whom we can move forward to change the coding. Indeed, the City Planning and Development Department has invited us to the table to help draft new ordinances that better allow for urban farming and possibly urban livestock.

This is a victory for BADSEED Farm, and it is also a victory for our SUPPORTERS. Thanks to all of you who wrote your council members. We attracted attention from not only our 6th District representatives, but also from politicians throughout the city and county. Your voices were heard. People from as far a field as Florida weighed in on our troubles.

But your support does not end here. It begins. In coming weeks, we will hold a meeting about potential code changes to support urban agriculture and urban livestock. At that meeting we will need your input, and after that we will need you to remain vocal with your councilmembers to get these new ordinances passed.

So, although our produce may not make you guilty by association, it is still BAAADDAAASSSS.

See you this Friday from 4:30 to 9 PM

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - and an URBAN FARM TOUR UPDATE

Hello Eaters,

Now that we're past the solstice, we're turnin' up the heat at the BADSEED Market! All of us urban growers are gearing up for the Urban Farms Tour this Sunday. We are braving the heat this week, weeding and edging our beds, and trying to get things prettied up for the crowds. You've gotten to know us at market; now come visit our farms, including Root Deep, Herb'n Gardener, and BADSEED. Steve Mann will also be on the tour with Creekhouse Organic Community Garden.

Friday Night brings a special Urban Farms Tour edition of the BADSEED Market from 4:30 - 9 PM. We'll have Food Not Lawns at the market, sowing seeds in your minds about the abundance of food that could come from your own lawn as well as a series of Urban Homesteading Food Preservation demos!!! Schedule is as follows:

6:00 PM - Blanching & Freezing Greens (with the lovely, local foodie, Emily Akins)

6:20 PM - Pickling (water bath canning with Farmer Brooke)

6:45 PM - Fermentation #1: Kombucha "Mushroom" Tea (brew your own medicine with Farmer Brooke)

7:10 - Fermentation #2: Red Wine Vinegar (make your own with Farmer Brooke)

And of course, the Market will be stocked with wondrous fresh food from our varied urban farms. Come gather the growing bounty that we find in our fields!!

BADSEED Farm
1201 W Bannister Rd.
We've put on our workout clothes, and we're sweatin' it out on our steamy plot. What a whacky season! We love seeing everyone at market, but we'd really love to have you see our farm up close and personal. Come meet the goats and the chicks, and see what a big suburban backyard can grow.

This week at market we'll have more of our famous Stir-Fry Mix to be eaten raw or sauteed with your favorite dish. Root vegetables abound with giant radishes, tender turnips, snappy carrots, and buxom beets. Massive Rainbow Chard Bunches with electric color. Large leaves of Russian, Bore and Dino Kale. (Just a few, and just in time) Summer Squash!! From Brooke's new herbal tea garden, we will have Fresh Tea Bouquets with calendula, chamomile, lemon and bee balm, mint, catnip, and lime basil. Also, we have an assortment of culinary herbs, including BASIL, thyme, oregano, and tarragon. This will likely be one of the final weeks for edible flowers; take advantage of them while they are available!!

Herb'n Gardener Lew Edminster
"so it looks like this years veggie production is going to be dictated by the extremes of drowning and schorching. i know i'll have bothfrench filet and provider beans this week, along with some sort of salad greens ( probably arugula). zinnias love heat and i'll have another bigger batch of them for market along with some cosmos. thyme, tarragon and basil will finish my offering for market"

Root Deep Urban Farm
Sherri grows a wide range of vegetables that everyone can love. Herbs, greens, and (of course) tomatoes abound on Sherri's farm. We understand that she already has a few cherry tomatoes.

Platte Prairie Farm
Its a safe bet that Steve will have some mulberries this week, as he has for the past two weeks. What a delicious treat! Steve has a good assortment of the season's produce.

Also, come down and enjoy the freshly roasted and brewed coffees from Pudd'n Head Coffee. You can take a cup to go along with some sweets and breads from Bread of LIfe. EGGS and CHEESE, including FETA made from the finest goat's milk in the state.

Come see us, and learn some new urban homesteading skills this Friday Night at the BADSEED Farmers' Market!!

Sincerely,

Farmer Dan

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED

Hey hey hey,

Hope everyone spent the weekend stuffing themselves with the swiss chard, goat cheese, sprouts, and other delights from last week's market! Summer is upon us and June is bearing down! Things haven't been too terribly hot, yet. But it's coming. Indeed, spring sprang sprung it's way out of here, and some delicious produce will go with it. So we take this opportunity to remind you of the splendor of the spring greens (images above are clickable for larger format) that are still going strong.

Of course, we're all twiddling our thumbs waiting for tomatoes, peppers, squash, and the other heavy hitters. Us farmers want that stuff, too. But lets not let pass unnoticed the enormous, brilliantly colored bunches of swiss chard. Nor should we let fat bags of arugula, begging to be mixed into a pasta, sit idle on the market table. Soon there will be no nasturtium blossoms for your salads, nor mixed mustards to fry up southern style. And the kale will be so holey not even the pope would touch it.

So please, do yourself a favor - Load up and chow down on some of the finest local organic greens available anywhere.

This week at the BADSEED Farmers' Market, we will have the full range of spring flavors, including:

BAD and BADDER SEEDS Dan Heryer and Brooke Salvaggio from those southern suburbs.
Hows about some more big beautiful multicolored CHARD BUNCHES for all those early comers. You haven't seen companion planting until you've seen our row of nasturtiums down the middle of our kale bed. We'll have some of the bunched KALE leaves from that bed, as well as bagged NASTURTIUM blossoms for all you EDIBLE FLOWER folks. Also, lots of ARUGULA - not too spicy. Look for the Brooke's fabulous SALAD MIX with assorted herbs (we've gotten so many rave reviews, it seems that this salad mix really might change your life). STIR-FRY Mix. A few more LETTUCE HEADS, maybe. We have more TARRAGON than we know what to do with, as well as some other FRESH-CUT HERBS. And of course RADISHES and TURNIPS - some of the most amazing turnips ever tasted.

Lew "The Herb'n Gardener" Edminster from the West Side of KC
this week i'll have a small amount of zinnias and larkspur cut flowers. arugla is taking a rest for a couple of weeks and is being replaced with mild mesclun. there'll be more russian kale for the kale freaks and all-star gourmet mix continues for only maybe two weeks and then it's bye-bye until fall crops. green beans will be on next week. i could auction off the one or two packs of cherry tomatos i'll get.

Steve "the Platte Prairie" Mann with the Squash Blossom in his hand from the land Up North
This Mann has some juicy Mulberries, kale, arugula, salad mix, turnips and borage.

Pudd'n Head Coffee
Micro-Roasted Fair Trade Organic Coffee Beans, as well as fresh brewed coffee by the glass.

Bread of Life
Savory, sweet and otherwise delicious baked goods.

And of course, Pastured EGGS from Bread of Life
and amazing aged and fresh GOAT CHEESE from Goatsbeard Farm.

Spring is still here. Get these great goods before their season passes.

Happy eating!

Dan and Brooke
