Hello, all!
We have an opportunity to help some of our fellows in their time of great need. I believe you have now heard of Fruitful Hills CSA, a new member of both the KCFC and the KCCSAC this year. The CSA is comprised of a group of German Baptist Brethren farming families near Trenton, MO who practice horse-powered farming methods and a simpler way of life (no computers, phones, etc.) and cooperate to provide for their CSA. Their coordinator is Michael Frantz, a very pleasant fellow who I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with at the Expos earlier this Spring.
Earlier this week, the Frantz family's house was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. No people or animals were hurt (thank goodness) and the crops are fine, but the family has been reduced to living in a toolshed until a new house can be built (likely this Fall). So, upon the request of Kate Barsotti (the CSA's in-city coordinator), I am sending out a call for helping hands, supplies, and volunteers. Per Kate, we are looking for: homebuilders, cabinet makers, grading/construction workers, gardeners for plant beautification, and a donated lightning rod (seriously). As the Brethren are, like the Amish, not users of power equipment and the like, this construction would need to be accomplished by folks who are good with hand-tools, and who know how to build as sustainably as possible.
We will be accosting Habitat ReStore and any other sources we can think of for as many materials as we can find. For the hauling of any materials, do you know of anyone who could lend the Frantzes a trailer for a few months? Or does anyone have a storage place where materials/supplies could be held? Would anyone be willing to use their truck to help haul materials/supplies to the building site when the time comes?
