Soil is both the literal and figurative foundation of your farm. There is far more to soil than meets the eye. Because soil management is an integral skill on successful sustainable farms, producers should develop an understanding of basic soil principles and implement soil management practices that maximize soil biology, structure, and nutrition. This workshop will present agricultural soil basics and cover cropping specifics, complemented by a showcase of real-world sustainable soil management practices on a local farm. New and existing specialty crop producers should attend.
00-10:00 Introduction to Basic Soil Health ~~ Doug Peterson, State Soil Health Conservationist, Missouri NRCS
00-10:15 Break
15-11:15 Incorporating Cover Cropping Strategies into your Farming Operation ~~ Greg Stegner, Resource Conservationist, NRCS and Cover Crop Practitioner
15-12:00 An Overview of the Soil Management Activities at Fair Share Farm ~~ Tom Ruggieri, Co-Owner/Operator Fair Share Farm.
00-1:00 Lunch (provided) and travel to Fair Share Farm
