Three well versed permaculture designers will be teaching this workshop: *Steve Moring* of Vajra Farm Permaculture Center, *Ben Stallings* of Interdependent Web Permaculture Design, and *Michael Almon* of Forest Floor Permaculture.  It will be an in-depth, intensive, survey course of essential permaculture concepts and methods.  The workshop will cover the essentials in the creation of urban-scale and broad acre permaculture landscapes.  It will also include design exercises and group discussion of permaculture applications, resources and community projects.  Learn how to design and maintain productive ecosystems through articulation of your goals, group activities and examples of permaculture applications in various contexts.

Re-skilling for the Future: A Course in Permaculture Ethics, Principles and Design

Kaw Permaculture and the Kansas Permaculture Institute’s Spring Permaculture Design Certification Course, “Re-Skilling for the Future: A Course in Permaculture Ethics, Principles and Design” begins on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at the Dreher 4-H Building, 2110 Harper St. in Lawrence.

The course consists of a series of ten, three hour classroom lectures and video screenings, and six field sessions held every Wednesday from 6 – 9 pm and Saturdays from 1-4pm until mid April.  The course culminates with four, six hour hands-on practicum sessions, where students will learn about various applications of permaculture design principles. The practicum sessions will take place in April and May, when we will visit different demonstration farms and urban gardens. Students that complete the 72 hours of course instruction will be awarded a Permaculture Design Certificate from the Kansas Permaculture Institute.

Permaculture and Sustainable Living

*PERMACULTURE EARTHWORKS: SWALES, TERRACES, WATER CATCHMENTS

*Steve Moring* of the *Kaw Permaculture Collaborative* will cover a critical component of any site design, that of maximizing water absorption and minimizing run-off. Several techniques can be used to modify the terrain as needed, and they are best done at the outset before any planting takes place. *Water catchments* can be roofs with tank storage, or ground basins like ponds or water gardens. *Swales and Key Lines* are water channels that spread run-off horizontally by gravity. *Terraces* are on-level contours that slow the down-hill flow of water. This lecture is the eighth in a nine-session permaculture lecture series, presented every two weeks. Interspersed with the lectures will be occasional field trips.

The lecture will be followed by a viewing of the film *"Water Harvesting"* by Geoff Lawton. A $30.00 admission fee will be requested at the door. The fees will support both the K.P.C. and it's parent organization, *Sustainability Action Network*.
