Brookside - Farmers' Community Market - Saturdays 8am-1pm

Greetings Market Friends,

I think we all agree that the Tomato Festival last week was a huge success! I hope you all got to stop by and sample some of Jasper's terrific tomato treats. He did a wonderful job! The vendors all had a great selection of tomatoes, as well as other summer garden treasures. This week you can look forward to much the same. As you will read in the farmers' section below, all the crops are in full swing. A new favorite of mine are the blackberries from East Winds Gardens. They are the best I have ever had (seriously). Not too tart, not too sweet. Just right with your cereal, yogurt, ice cream or straight out of the carton. Blue Door Farms also has peaches in season. I promise if you try our fruit, you will swear off the grocery store imports for good.

Speaking of grocery stores, did you know the average grocery store product item travels 1500 miles to make it to your cart? There was an article in the Star this week discussing this very topic. Here is the link: http://www.kansascity.com/238/story/723908.html. I am not sure how "fresh" food can be if it travels that far by air or land (I know I am not very fresh myself after a flight back east :)) Along these lines, we are also looking for a couple of community volunteers to help us with a little research. We are wondering if a few of you would like to help us compare market prices to grocery store prices based on item by item costs. We already have a hypothesis, but we would like some of our shoppers to join in on our fun. If you are interested, please write back to me at franki@farmerscommunitymarket.com. Thank you in advance.

Also, please remember that the market does accept monetary donations. Support from market patrons in the form of a financial contribution helps keep us up and running from year to year. Please stop by the market tent for information about making such a contribution. Non-cash donations in the form of items for our annual raffle drawing (as well as the items for crafts listed below) are accepted as well. And speaking of the raffle, you can also purchase a raffle ticket this season to win one of many fabulous prizes. The grand prize is a dinner for 8 at the winner’s home complete with all organic products from the market. Please contact Eddie Adel for information at 816-965-0934.

As always, we look forward to seeing you at the Border Star School at 63rd and Wornall Road in the heart of Brookside from 8 am to 1 pm every Saturday. Please check out our website with information about our market and our calendar: http://www.FarmersCommunityMarket.com.

See you Saturday!

Now from our Farmers…

From Bread of Life Bakery:

The week has been a busy one with Bryce and Lili keeping us all going at the bakery. Bryce loves the cinnamon rolls and likes to have them around to snack on at all times. I think his Mommy is not totally for that. He will have to switch off with Potato Bread since he likes to have that
shipped out to him in California. We are having our farmer deliver some of our wheat this week. Harvest has been good for him and the variety he grows does well for him in Kansas.

We will have our market burritos, meat (sausage) and non meat, quiches with smoked grueyre cheese and cheddar, coffee (Puddin' Head), rolls, bars and a variety of breads.

Have a good week and see you Saturday,
Kathy, Luke and Chris

From the KC Center for Urban Agriculture:

Today, one of our employees came in and said, "Hey Dan, you'll never guess what I found beneath all that grass you told me to pull!" I shrugged my shoulders, "Beats me."
"HERBS!!", he exclaimed. Yes, one could say the weeds have gotten a little out of control here at the Kansas City Community Farm. Of course, we've taken great care of the best crops, and others have fallen by the wayside. Some of our least popular crops are completely lost in weeds. Our apprentices are more like archeologists. Snakes have become a common find in these weeding expeditions. But we're pushing through (with some extra help) and, we'll be out of the thicket in no time.
This week, we'll still have plenty of TOMATOES at market (even if the rain cracked some). You can eat those tomatoes with some BASIL. We'll also have other summer crops like ZUCCHINI and SUMMER SQUASH, EGGPLANT, PEPPERS (both sweet and hot), and TOMATILLOS. We'll have a few more fabulous MELONS, as well as plenty of roots like BEETS and CARROTS (of many colors). You can load up on CUCUMBERS, and we'll have a pretty good harvest of EDAMAME and OKRA.
Summer brings so many exciting crops. Please don't miss them!
We hope to see you at the market!
Dan, Katherine, Daniel and the Crew.

Blue Door Farm:

Yup, I have more peaches. :) These are from the taller branches, and many are larger than last weeks. They've had a little longer to grow and sweeten up.
My tomatoes have also finally kicked in, so I'll have a mix of field grown Big Beef, Cherokee Purple, Mountain Gold, Jet Star, Brandywine, and more.
Also "on tap":
- Cool, crisp cucumbers - perfect for the upcoming heatwave.
- Eggplant and Summer Squash - great on the grill.
- Garlic and Basil
- Leeks
- Potatoes (Carola, Red Gold and Purple Majesty) Potato salad anyone?
- Carrots
- Beets
For those of you who liked the lambsquarter, I will try to bring a few bunches (the ones that escaped the lawnmower...)
Stay cool,
Laura

Wells Family Farms:

Hi Everyone, Hope you week has been filled with accomplishments and joy! If only it wasn't such hard work!!! For this weekend we are limited in cuts, I don't have any KC Strip, Filet or Ribeye. I do have Sirloin, Roast, Round, Ground, Ribs some stew meat. Our next processing will be done by the 12 or 13 of August. Talk to you this Saturday.

Stay healthy, live Green!

Kim

The Rustic Owl:

This will be our last week at the market for the season. We have enjoyed getting to know all of you and being part of this great organization. I will be giving out a free tea light with every purchase this week. Thank you for your business, and we will see you next year!

Amanda

New Roots for Refugees Farm:

The growers at the New Roots for Refugees farm have been hard at work for the past two months growing yummy vegetables just for you! We are an urban, training farm located in Kansas City, Kansas teaching refugee women from Somalia, Burma and Burundi how to grow vegetables here in the United States.
We are so excited to be a part of the Brookside Market. This week we will be offering a variety of produce; SWEET CORN!, lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage, okra, green beans, squash and peppers! All of it has been grown with love and heart and a lot of hard work.
Please be patient with us, as many of us are brand new to the United States and speak very little English. We do want to learn, though! So stop by, introduce yourself and see all of the delicious things we have available.
To see pictures of us and our farm, check out www.newrootsforrefugees.blogspot.com
Looking forward to meeting all of you friendly eaters!

TOMATOES and some FRUIT are coming in soon... are you ready to do some canning?

Please bring small bills, shopping bags and solidarity to your local farmers market, and remember: slow food requires patience and understanding. Buying organically-grown vegetables and other local products "In-Season" means just that - when it is ready for harvest, your growers will bring it in.

Farmers’ Community Market at Brookside

Greetings Market Friends,

It has been a true joy to see the fruits of the labor of our farmers come to be in the form of summer produce. Katherine writes very eloquently in the farmers’ section about the joy of the summer tomato. I cannot agree with her more. I, myself, have had a great time this summer with my first garden. It has been a real miracle to watch seedlings turn to vines, then to fruits and vegetables, then to our dinner table. I hope you all will come and see what all our vendors have to offer. Don’t miss many of summer’s best pleasures!

Remember also, our tomato festival is coming up on July 26th. It will be a great day at the market with many exciting additions to our usual line-up, including a cooking demonstration by Kansas City’s celebrity chef, Jasper Mirabile. We will be sending more information in the days to come, so stay tuned!

This week for your musical entertainment, we will have Nick Baker. Come have a breakfast burrito, some coffee, and enjoy the morning the Brookside way!

Please remember that the market does accept monetary donations.

As always, we look forward to seeing you at the Border Star School at 63rd and Wornall Road in the heart of Brookside from 8 am to 1 p.m. every Saturday. Please check out our website, which information about our market and our calendar: http://www.FarmersCommunityMarket.com.

See you Saturday!

Franki

Now from our Farmers…

From Bread of Life Bakery:

Hello market friends,

Our warm weather has finally come and our bakery was very hot with two ovens going and the hot days starting. We have been enjoying the nice weather longer than usual and I was ready for it to stay that way!

The market burritos will have local vegetables, squash, spinach, potatoes from wood Mood Gardens, onions and farm fresh local eggs. Our meat burritos will have Benedict Builders’ sausage added to the mixture. Quiches, raspberry bars, cinnamon rolls, cookies and breads will also be available. Have breakfast at the market and visit friends and vendors while you shop.

Luke and Chris have had a busy week finishing hay and delivering hay to a family with a new horse. Haying is hard work in the heat so market day is a time for them to slow down and enjoy a beautiful day at the market with music and visiting with their market customers/ friends.

See many of you Saturday,
Luke (dairyman of a family cow now), Chris (the cookie man) and Kathy (just Mom)

From the KC Center for Urban Agriculture:

Oh, tomatoes, lovely tomatoes… Glossy red, radiant orange, sultry pink, and, my favorite, the wonderful mahogany of Cherokee Purple. The tomatoes are just beginning to hit their peak, for the next few weeks you can expect abundance, beauty and unbelievable flavor! Slice them up with buffalo mozzarella or any fresh, slightly salty cheese, toss some basil and balsamic on them, and you have the most perfect dinner.

If there were no other arguments at all for local agriculture (and there are many J), tomatoes alone would do it.

For an even more perfect dinner though, add some homemade croutons from bread from one of the market’s bread vendors to the tomato salad, make a local three bean salad using our Tri-Color mix and boiled baby potatoes, and toss our salad mix with a light dressing. Now there is a summer meal.

This time of year, you can be the most fabulous cook with the least amount of effort, local fruits and vegetables are all you need!

Other ideas for cooking this week:

Julienned cucumbers, kohlrabi, and turnips salted and marinated in vinegar and oil. Perhaps with a bit of tarragon or winter savory.

Swiss chard braised with the unbelievable garlic that is just really coming along.

Lightly steamed cabbage as a bed for lamb, beef, or chicken.

Cold roasted baby beets and carrots.

Finely diced zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, and onions “quick pickled” in vinegar and salt. (Make a lot of this, you’ll want to eat it all week.)

Oh, and eggplant! These are coming on some-kind-of-gorgeous! Slice them in half, brush them with oil, roast them in the oven, then mash up with some salt, pepper, garlic, and oil, (and tahini if you have it on hand) and you have a cooling spread for sandwiches or roll-ups.

Just decide that your “recreational” activities over the coming weeks are going to be cooking! Forget the movies, going out to dinner, or browsing at the mall, this is the time of year to just cook and eat and be grateful for real, good, local food.

Katherine, Daniel, Dan H, and the rest of the crew!

From Puddin’ Head Coffee:

Hello fellow coffee drinkers! George and I returned on the 4th from an extended vacation to the Northwest and were a bit tired on Saturday but it was good to see everyone. We drove over 2000 miles in a rental car on our "vacation" so needed to come back home for a rest.

George has been roasting like crazy and on Saturday we will have our usual Rainforest Blend and Toby's Decaf but will be offering Mexico Chiapas and a new coffee called Blue Ridge Blend which we are excited about. George is describing it as bold and full-bodied with "hints of cinnamon and nutmeg". We are on the last of our Ethiopia Yirga Ch'efe but have an order for Ethiopia Sudamo coming any day and hope to have that roasted by Saturday.

See you at the market!

George and Vicki Hartman, Puddin' Head Coffee

Wells Family Farm:

Hi Everyone, Sorry that I missed market last Saturday. I will do my best not to be absent again. Farm and family life does catch me off guard sometimes! We do have all cuts available. Some beautiful brisket, and all the great steaks. DE and our bug repellant have been having a great impact on our summer and from the feed back I have received from many of you it has made your summer better too!

Hope to see you all at market!

Kim

Green Dirt Farm:

This week at the market we will have some beautiful frenched Racks! We also have legs available, both bone-in and boneless. Arrive early for sausage as we only have two packages left. Our ground lamb makes yummy gyro burgers and to make it easy, we have a recipe!

Our milking parlor and cheese kitchen are up and running. We should have cheese for sale sometime in the very near future. Remember to plan on coming to our open house celebration on July 27th. Stop by to sign up for our electronic newsletter and watch your email for a special invitation!

We'll see you Saturday!

Sarah, Jacque and the rest of the crew

The KCCUA folks were kind enough to provide several recipes in their section of the newsletter, so I will throw in one more for good measure:

Summer Squash Fry

· 2 tablespoons olive oil

· 1 onion, chopped

· 2–3 crushed garlic cloves

· 4–5 medium sized zucchini or other assorted summer squashes

· 1/4 cup chicken or vegetable stock

· 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh oregano

· dusting of grated cheese

· chopped fresh parsley as garnish

Sauté onion and garlic in the olive oil until onion is barely softened. Add squash and stir-fry a minute or so. Stir in the stock and oregano and simmer gently until the liquid has almost evaporated. Serve, dusting with cheese and garnish with parsley. For additional color, add chopped red bell pepper to the mix.

Saturday - Farmers’ Community Market at Brookside

Farmer's Community Market at Brookside
Saturdays 8am-1pm

From: Franki Shearer
Manager

Hello Y'All,

Greetings from sunny South Carolina. Sorry this e-mail is not as "pretty" as my others, but I am working on a computer that does not have all my fancy programs. Well, my mission is fulfilled; I have eaten a bushel of shrimp, fried okra and fried green tomatoes. I have had a great time checking out what local eats there are to offer in this part of the country. Last night I had the local flounder, and it was great! But...

...I am very excited to get back to KC and check on my tomato crop. And, as you will read below, our farmers are starting to see the beginnings of their tomato harvest as well. Stop by Saturday and pick up all your holiday picnic needs. We still have great cuts of meat and lot of great fixings for some fresh side dishes.

As always, we look forward to seeing you at 63rd and Wornall every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Also, check us out at www.farmerscommunitymarket.com.

Now from our farmers......

From Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture:

We just went through an unusual bit of hail storm here at the farm; large pieces the size of golf balls coming down all around us. For me, that's a first since my arrival here in the Midwest in 1999. I have heard of it on the news but never seen it this large. Luckily we don't have head lettuce or spinach in the field, otherwise you'd be looking at a lot of shredded produce this weekend.

Please remember to come out to the market this weekend. The produce keeps growing even on holidays and we hope you'll consider a quick trip to the farmers market to stock up on organic produce and then enjoy good food for the rest of your holiday weekend. Thank you!

We had our first noteworthy SUMMER SQUASH harvest yesterday; about three weeks late, much like many other crops this year, but much welcomed. You'll also find more first-rate FILET BEANS and TRI-COLOR BEANS on our tables. Both are really wonderful this time of year. And TOMATOES... yes, each week a little more, so don't miss out. More NEW POTATOES, BEETS, TURNIPS and CARROTS; also CABBAGE and CUCUMBERS; More BABY ONIONS, SCALLIONS and GARLIC (we just harvested a big round of garlic... you can smell it all through our building!). Also, beautiful bunched greens like KALE and CHARD as well as some baby SALAD GREENS if we can find them. I probably forgot something but whatever it is it'll be there for you on Saturday. Have a HAPPY FOURTH! (oh here's what I forgot: FRESH HERBS) See ya!

From Wells Family Farms:

Hello All,

Things on this farm sure could not possibly get any busier! Could they? The kids are at the grandparents for 7 days, which is some ways good and as many bad! Along with my attempts at berry picking I have about 100 thistle that have decided to join our fields. My spade tarp and bucket will be my buddies tonight! The calves in that pasture are very amusing and nosy so I am sure to have company!

I am looking to be stocked up this week so will see everyone at market. I can't promise berries but I will be pleased if I find enough!

See ya Saturday,
Kim

From Bread of Life Bakery:

Hello Brookside Market Friends,

This week has been hectic with hay getting finished, weeding, lawn work and another calf born to Luke Belted Galloway. It is so cute to see a little black calf with a white band around it's middle.

The Bakery will have it's usual breads with our new rosemary twist bread , snacks and honey pecan rolls. Luke and Chris will have more breakfast burritos this week with sausage, potato and egg, and meatless ones with potato, spinach and egg. We'll have Puddin Head Coffee, raspberry bars, granola bars, blueberry streusel scone and we will have vegan bran muffins this week and granola bars made with organic peanut butter.

Have a good week and see many of you on Saturday,

Kathy, Luke and Chris

KCFC's Local Organic, Natural and Free-Range Farmers Markets

Featured Farmers Markets in K.C.
In Kansas City we are fortunate to have access to a number of Farmers Markets that only accept vegetable and fruit farmers who agree to grow using organic methods. Organic growers avoid the use of conventional fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and other biocides, and strive to preserve the health of the living soil. In addition, the farmers at these markets who produce meat, eggs, and dairy products agree to avoid the use of synthetic growth promotants such as hormones and subtherapeutic antibiotics. The market listings below are written by representatives of the markets, and the Food Circle, being an all-volunteer organization, is unable to evaluate or certify each market’s standards and practices. For additional information about these issues or to find out what is meant by any particular term in a market listing, please contact the market directly with your questions.

KC Local Green Events - Week of 4/23/2008

Conversations on the Environment:
Richard Louv

Futurist and journalist Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods and six other books, speaks about what he calls the "Nature Deficit Disorder" in the fourth installment of Conversations on the Environment on Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, 4801 Main Street. Admission is free.

As a child growing up in Raytown, Louv explored the woods around his home. As an adult, he researched what's happening to today's wired generation of America's children and then coined the phrase "Nature Deficit Disorder" to describe the most disturbing childhood trends: the rise in obesity, attention disorders and depression.

Louv's body of research indicates that direct exposure to nature is essential for healthy childhood development and for the physical and emotional health of children and adults. More than just raising an alarm, Louv offers practical solutions and simple ways to heal the broken bond â?? and they are right in our own backyard.

A 6:30 p.m. public reception precedes the presentation. Seating space for this event is limited. Complete the form below or call 816.701.3407 to indicate your interest in attending. Free parking is available in the Plaza Branch's parking garage.

2007 was a landmark year in the area of climate change in the Midwest. In November 2007, the Midwest Governor’s Association signed the Energy Security and Climate Stewardship Platform for the Midwest. The National Farm Bureau and the National Farmer’s Union have both launched carbon programs. In addition, the Lieberman-Warner bill contains language specific to agriculture. Tune into this web conference to learn what you need to know to get up to speed on this rapidly evolving area in agriculture.

Topics to be covered will center around carbon policy and implications for agriculture

  • What are the programs and policies in development that will regulate carbon and what will enforcement look like?
