This week we’ll be entertained at market by our very own Rachel Bonar of the New Roots program. From 8:30 to 10:00 she and the “String Beans” will be playing old time blue grass and folk music for your listening pleasure.
My, we are a talented group, aren’t we? :)
Kids (and the young at heart) are invited to exercise their own artistic talents this week with fun potato stamp projects, courtesy of Roaring River Bread Company.
So come visit Saturday for great local food and toe tapping, potato stamping fun.

A good week here at the farm. Rains have been so plentiful this season making it almost unnecessary to irrigate. And during a storm the rain washes nitrogen to the ground fertilizing the crops. Some crops really responded well to that, like the okra and eggplant. Many of our tomatoes are struggling, however, and no amount of rain or fertilizer is going to turn that around. We're glad there's another planting of hoophouse tomatoes on the way. Also doing really well are summer squash, cucumbers, peppers (they're really starting to turn) and new rounds of beans which are coming along.

On our tables this week you'll find more TOMATOES including HEIRLOOMS, RED HYBRIDS, ROMAS and CHERRIES. There'll be yummy root vegetables like BEETS, CARROTS, maybe even a few HAKUREI TURNIPS. We've almost completed our POTATO harvest, so look for more tasty fingerlings as well as our other varieties, like Carola, All Blue, etc. Combine them with some of our FILET or TRI-COLOR BEANS (supply is down this week in anticipation of another round coming on in a couple of weeks). Also, get more of the EDAMAME which make the best snack! We'll also have SCALLIONS, LEEKS, ONIONS and GARLIC. Then the summer veggies mentioned earlier, like PEPPERS, SQUASH, CUKES and EGGPLANT (the pinkish-purple "Dancer" is one of the best-tasting and highest-producing varieties I've ever seen), OKRA. We'll also bring more summer greens like PURSLANE, MALABAR SPINACH and this week probably a few bunches of SWEET POTATO GREENS, all of which are great alternatives to the spring greens that don't do so well in this heat. Oh, and Alicia told me she's going to start harvesting WINTER SQUASH. Very nice!

Hello Brookside market friends,
We will have our usual fare at the market, Burritos made with farm fresh eggs and organic tortillas, Benedict Builders sausage and Josiah's potatoes. I can't seem to make enough for the boys to have any on Saturday so I will try to make more this week. The quiches made with smoked Gouda is another tasty breakfast treat to have on Saturday.
Our whole grain breads and goodies will also be available. The vegan pumpkin muffins are a hit and we thank Lili for leaving her recipe with us so we can continue making the muffins she started making. We also will have a vegan brownie this week along with our regular brownie.

I was wondering where the Kansas summer heat was… I’m not wondering anymore. Not too bad though, eh? I’ve been busy this week planting for fall harvests – cross your fingers for the turnips, broccoli and cabbage. Soon I’ll put out the head lettuce.
The Carmen sweet peppers and the Japanese eggplants are appreciating this heat, and I’ll have both at market this week, along with the usual suspects - zucchini, squash and tomatoes. I’ll also bring a few more of what my CSA members report is the ultimate kid friendly veggie – spaghetti squash.
