KC STAR ARTICLE - Missing Farmer Leads to Missing Produce Reported by: Jenn Strathman

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -

Community supported agriculture gets locally grown, fresh food on tables all over the metro. Some CSA's promise more than they can deliver. Consumers need to realize it's a vegetable deal with risk.

--- click link for the full article ---

Our data base search yields nothing about Cooke's background. We can't find his farm. We only found a PO Box at a mailbox store. His business is also not registered with the state of Missouri or Kansas. The $365 fee took a huge bite out of several wallets, but gave customers little to chew on. We also made several calls and sent emails to cooke - he has not contacted us.

There are many good, local CSA's. Our experts say step one would be to visit the actual farm, before you buy.

The demand for community supported agriculture outpaces the surplus, allowing you to lose your investment if you're not careful.

Join the Climate Action Rally at Mill Creek Park on Saturday, October 24th, 2009

KC Food Circle asks you to take part in KC's
October 24th Climate Action rally

On Saturday, October 24th, the 350.org campaign is asking people all around the world to organize events for an International Day of Climate Action, and there are currently more than 1800 actions scheduled in 146 countries. A group of volunteers is organizing a rally from 2-4 p.m. that day at Mill Creek Park on the Plaza, 47th St. & J.C. Nichols Parkway (if you don’t live in the metro-KC area, you can search for a rally near you by going here). These rallies are meant to serve as virtual marches on the capitals of the world, avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that would result from actual marches. The centerpiece of each event will be a group photo displaying the 350 message, and these photos will be uploaded and sent to national and international leaders.

Why has the coordinating committee of the KC Food Circle voted to cosponsor this KC rally?

If we continue with business-as-usual, climate disruption is projected to have major negative impacts on food production worldwide. Moreover, switching to a locally-based, organic food system is one of the best ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and remove CO2 from the atmosphere:
  • By relying on manure, compost, and nitrogen-fixing crops to build soil fertility, organic farmers avoid the CO2 emissions caused by burning fossil fuels to mine and manufacture synthetic fertilizers
  • By adding nitrogen to the soil through biological means, organic farmers avoid emissions of nitrous oxide–a greenhouse gas that’s ~300 times as potent as CO2–which come from land fertilized with synthetic nitrogen
  • Growing crops organically and pasturing farm animals increases the amount of carbon stored in soil, removing CO2 from the atmosphere
  • Growing food very close to where it’s eaten reduces the use of fuel for transportation
  • Pasturing farm animals enables them to eat a healthy diet of green plants, insects, etc., reducing and in some cases eliminating energy-intensive corn and soy feed
  • Pasturing farm animals allows their waste to return directly to the soil, avoiding emissions of the greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide from concentrated waste storage at confined-animal feeding operations
  • Locally-grown foods are typically minimally-processed and packaged, reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
For more information about the global warming benefits of locally-grown organic and free-range foods, check out the Center for Food Safety’s Cool Foods Campaign, Sustainable Table, Eat Wild, and the Rodale Institute, which also has a short video on YouTube titled “Organic Farming Lessens Global Warming” that you can share with the people you know.

BROOKSIDE - The Community Farmers Market at Brookside (KCMO) - for Market Day (SATURDAYS)

Saturdays, 8am to 1pm
under the white tents at theBorder Star Montessori School
63rd & Wornall, Kansas City, MO 64113

Greetings Market Friends!

http://www.farmerscommunitymarket.com/images/market_logo.gif

The weather is a little nippy, but pop a sweater on and join us - you'll be rewarded. A frost is likely coming soon, and the peppers and eggplants this week may be the last, so stock up now. There are only notes from a couple vendors this week, but the usual crew should be there Saturday, bundled up but smiling (or at least scowling in a friendly manner).

From our vendors:

KCCUA

Who will brave the weather with us?

Who is tough enough to show up at the market at 8:00 am when the sun has just peaked through the clouds of night? KCCUA farmers will be there. We’ll be there with one of your last chances to get fresh produce this year. We’re bringing amazing vegetables.

We will have sweet potatoes. They’ve become our #1 veggie over the last few weeks. We also have a few varieties of winter squash, but these are going fast. The sweet peppers are ripe and ready for grill or stuffing, okra very snackable, and summer squash that refuses to believe it is all over. Filet beans and tri-color beans are in abundance. We’ll also be harvesting edamame for market. This crop squeaked in just in time. Who knows if the cold weather will finish the plants next week…this may be your last chance till next June! We STILL have tomatoes Closing the high tunnels has helped the plants ripen the fruit. It’s time for a root celebration. Big boy turnips are perfect, if I’m allowed to say that. The beets are huge, full of color and flavor. We’ll have orange, Hercules carrots in bunches. Cherry belle radishes and new black, Nero di Tondo radishes, too. Leek bundles for soup. Scallions. Some mini onions. Garlic. Hot peppers like cayenne, pepperoncini, Thai and habanera. Eggplant, Herbs. And greens in the form of braising mix (aka Funky Fresh), bags o’baby chard, bags o’baby kale, sweet potato greens, salad mix, lettuce mix, microgreens, arugula, watercress, and spinach!

And I’m bringing Katherine!!! The only farmer who can say that!

I do hope to see you Saturday!

Alicia

Blue Door

Gotta love sweatshirt weather! Turnip weather! Even (gasp!) broccoli weather! Only one lonely head of broccoli is ready this week but I'm getting pretty excited about next week.

This week, however, the turnips and radishes once again reign. Also on the table this week is more tasty pac choi, yummy japanese eggplant and colorful swiss chard. The kale seems to love this weather, so I'll bring several bunches.

No raab this week , but another planting should be ready next week.

See you Saturday!

Laura

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - A MUST ON FRIDAYS IN THE CROSSROADS

Dearest Seekers of Earthly Edible Delights -

OH MY GOD!! There is nothing like digging a giant, radiating, fleshy-pink tuber out of the jet black earth. That's right folks:

SWEET POTATOES ARE HERE!!!!
(check out the pics below)

Me and my honey spent the better part of the day digging up these gorgeous gals so that you and your honey can snatch them up thisFriday from 4:30 to 9 PM at the BADSEED Farmers Market!!

I simply live for the Autumn Harvest! I farm all season long eating lettuce and tomatoes and okra and green beans, but secretly I want MORE!! I want something creamy and hearty and melt in your mouth sensational.....I want Sweet Potatoes and Pumpkins and Butternut Squash!!

I have to admit that since the arrival of Fall, life has gotten way too decadent. I stay up late making pumpkin pies, and pumpkin butters, soups, and pumpkin breads. Half way through the sweet potato harvest today I couldn't take the temptation. I had to run inside to make a Sweet Potato, Apple, and Jalapeno Fritter!!! For crying out loud, I feel the urge to make a Sweet Potato Pie coming on this minute!! Needless to say, the husband does not mind this insane behavior.

As for these fresh dug sweet pots, we have two varieties:

*Beauregard - an orange fleshed beauty with a creamy and sweet flavor perfect for pies and all concoctions
*Japanese - a white fleshed potato with a slightly denser texture and more complex flavor which I describe as "roasted marshmallow"!!! (it is my favorite)

And that's not all folks, BADSEED's gang of urban/renegade growers will also have the following:

**Luscious Leeks
**Sweet Bell Peppers in red and purple
**Orgasmic Eggplant
**Heirloom Winter Squash in Acorn, Butternut, Carnival, Spaghetti, and Japanese Pink Banana!!!!!
**Pie Pumpkins
**Chinese Red Noodle Beans
**Onions and Garlic
**Mean Greens including Gourmet Salad Mixes, Arugula, Spinach, Kale, Rainbow Chard, & our famous Asian "stir fry" Mix
**Red and Golden Beets
**Easter Egg Radishes
**Aromatic Herbs and more....

not to mention

***Aged and Fresh Goat Cheese from Goatsbeard Farm
***Fresh Roasted Organic Coffee from Puddin' Head
***Free Range EGGS & Delicious Baked BREADS from Bread of Life Bakery
