Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - A MUST ON FRIDAYS IN THE CROSSROADS

BADSEED

An Urban-Organic Farm & Market
Celebrating Local Food,
Culture, & Community

Precious Eaters -

Listen up - it is hot out there!!! Summer is really here. A whole lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into your food this week.......so enjoy!!! Savor every last mouth-watering minute of it. Their aint nothin' like the hot summer harvest in the midwest, and your gregarious gang of growers are dying to feed you the "fruits of our labor" this Friday at the BADSEED Farmers Market from 4-9 PM. Can you dig it?? I sure hope so....cuz we've been diggin' all day long.

It is 10:51 PM, and my sun-burnt booty needs to cut right to the chase. So without further ado:

***Sexy Veggie of the Week***

This week's runner-up is
none other than the striking Scallop Squash in White Scallop & Patisson Juan et Vert - a pale green French patty pan. These girls are the round & ruffled sisters to zucchini and can be prepared in a variety of delectable dishes like any summer squash. ** While harvesting peppermint today, I was reminded of a particular summer squash dish I encountered in South Eastern Sicily. I was living and working on an 18th century water mill that had been converted into an organic farm. The (aptly Sicilian) farmer lived 8 miles away in town, and would never show up to work before 12 PM. (I started at 7 AM). When he would finally arrive, he would often cook me lunch. One of his favorite dishes was thinly sliced summer squash lightly fried in olive oil, balsamic vinegar, house-made red wine, and mint. He would not only use the mint to flavor the frying oil, but he would sprinkle fresh leaves over the finished master-piece. It was divine! I would never think to pair the two. We would eat this with crusty bread and a generous glass of home-made wine. Then (tipsy and all) we would head out to the field together. (aaaah.....memories.....)

This week's grand-prize-winner is Purple Calabash Tomato.
This painfully sexy and outrageously tasty Heirloom Tomato is ruffled and riddled with charismatic creases. She has a deep purple disposition and a luxuriously rich flavor. Like most tomatoes in the "purple" family, she is full-bodied and devastatingly delicious. The flavor of heirloom tomatoes is often defined by their color. "Purple" tomatoes & "Black" tomatoes tend to be the most full-flavored of the bunch. BADSEED Farm grows a plethora of purple and black tomatoes including Cherokee Purple, Japanese Black Trifle, Black from Tula & Paul Robeson.

Pictures are attached. You know the drill - print them out, blow them up, & plaster them all over the men's room!!

Hidden Hills Farms CSA - SUMMER 2010 - Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, July 14, 2010
Contact: Emily Farris

Emily: 816-824-9674/Jennifer: 816-365-3305

MEMBERSHIPS STILL AVAILABLE FOR KC’S ONLY YEAR-ROUND, WHOLE-FARM CSA

Experience True Farm-to-Table Living When You Join Kansas City’s Only Year-Round,
100%-Member-Supported Sustainable Family Farm, and Eat Locally in Every Season

Hidden Hills Farms in Smithville, MO is now accepting applications for its year-round, full-farm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, which begins in October — just when traditional CSAs tend to go into hibernation for the winter.

“We all still eat year round, so why would we stop buying fresh, local food in the wintertime?” said Jennifer Charlson (@farmgirljenny) who runs the sustainable farm with her husband, Damon.

Unlike traditional CSAs, a Hidden Hills membership lasts 52 weeks and each member designs his or her membership from scratch. “You don’t like pork or don’t want too much dairy?,” said Charlson of the free-choice CSA. “No problem!”

At Hidden Hills Farms, members eat just like (very blessed) farmers all year round — each designing a personalized share of pasture-raised meats (beef, lamb, turkey, Heritage pigs and chickens) and eggs, 100% grass-fed dairy (farmstead cheeses and more fresh dairy products) and year-round Heirloom produce, grown outside in the warm seasons and in high tunnels during the cold months. In addition to whole foods, Hidden Hills Farms offers members a selection of a la carte items, including traditionally-prepared pantry goods (bone broths, pickled items, dressings) and meals to go.

A 100%-member-supported family farm, Hidden Hills Farms is an open farm, meaning members can stop by at any time to feed the chickens or pick some berries. And for those who want to learn how to milk a cow, make artisan cheeses or forage for morels, classes are available.

The farm is currently accepting applications for memberships, which begin in October, though a limited number of spots are open immediately. Contract delivery is available.

Half of all current farmers in the U.S. are likely to retire in the next decade. Enlisting and supporting new farmers is essential to the future of family farms, the farm economy and healthy rural communities.

Weekly Sustainability Announcements - SAN - Lawrence, KS

SUSTAINABILITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
SUSTAINABILITY ACTION NETWORK, Lawrence Kansas
13 July 2010
Local Solutions for Transition to a Sustainable Economy

ECO RADIO KC ¤ WEEKLY ECOLOGICAL ISSUES RADIO SHOW
Tuesday, 13 July 2010, 12:00noon ¤ on Kansas City Community Radio
Listen at KKFI-FM 90.1, or on web-streaming at http://www.kkfi.org/

On Eco-Radio KC this week, host John Kurmann will be talking with Gretchen Wieland of Repower America and Craig Volland of the Sierra Club - Kansas Chapter about the Gulf oil disaster and what we need to do to avoid future oil catastrophes.

Stay tuned at 12:30 when the Bioneers radio series presents "Becoming a Habitat: Motherhood, Faith, and the Environmental Human Rights Movement" . We live in a society dependent on toxic chemicals. Today about 287 such chemicals trespass inside the blood of newborns – and inside all of us - without our consent. Despite the odds, ecologist, author and mother Sandra Steingraber is an optimist. She’s betting that the burgeoning global environmental human rights movement will free us from our deadly dependency. She believes our grandchildren will look back on us and marvel that our economy was once dependent on toxic chemicals - and they will think of it as unthinkable.

PLAN A: OSSIFIED, FOSSILIZED BUSINESS AS USUAL

It's hard to know where to start here, but the unstated end goal is wealth consolidation from the many to the few. Margaret Thatcher (T.I.N.A.) and Ronald Reagan were early proponents of neo-liberalism of international finance. But it was Dick Cheney and cohorts, who when out of power in the 1990's, began the Project for the New American Century, which schemed everything from a rationale for war with Saddam Hussein to Cheney's own secretive Industry Energy Task Force when he was Vice President. It was this Task Force that developed a National Energy Policy heavily weighted toward dirty energy corporations including Enron, Exxon-Mobile, and BP Industry's Role in Cheney's Energy Task Force. Essentially the PNAC projects endless economic growth by projecting U.S. military strength into any global oil regions possible. And because all the easy oil is gone, it will take Xtreme Energy from Afganistan, from the Canadian tar sands, and from rigs like the Deepwater Horizon to fuel the hubris of endless economic growth.

PLAN B 4.0: MOBILIZING TO SAVE CIVILIZATION ¤ by LESTER BROWN

Lester Brown has been advocating for ecologically sustainable change for some three decades, first through the World Watch Institute, and now through the Earth Policy Institute. He and his staff take the most broad and comprehensive view of issues, and apply whole systems thinking to solutions. Plan B 4.0 addresses peak oil, climate disruption, water and food shortages, and population curtailment. PlanB4-0_Slide Show.pdf
___________________________________________________

PLAN C: CURTAILMENT IS THE ACTION, COMMUNITY IS THE CONTEXT

Plan A seeks to maintain economic growth by developing unconventional fossil fuels, increased use of “clean” coal and more nuclear power plants. Plan B also seeks to maintain the status quo, believing this can be done with renewable energy sources. Plan C focuses on ways to dramatically reduce or “curtail” our per capita energy consumption by reducing the goods and services we use. This is in contrast to “energy efficiency”, which refers to reducing the energy required to produce and use an expanding level of goods and services.

Community is the context for a culture where consumption is not the primary value. Community also describes a culture or way of living where relationships are more important than material goods. In Plan C, the "C" also stands for contingency as in "contingency plan". Even though it is possible that some breakthrough technology will suddenly make all our concerns go away, it is unlikely. 2,4-D HERBICIDE SPRAY DRIFT PROPOSAL AT DOUGLAS COUNTY COMMISSION
Wednesday, 14 July 2010, 6:30pm
Douglas County Courthouse, 11th & Massachusetts St,. Lawrence KS

The Commission will discuss tightening the restrictions on spraying of the Dow Chemical herbicide 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, a broad leaf herbicide. At issue is the time of the season when spraying may be limited or banned, because the herbicide behaves differently depending on air temperature.

During rainy years, the target weeds flower later, plus the rain delays mowing. So 2,4-D ends up being sprayed more, and at dates later than normal. In cool months, the spray can drift possibly a mile. But in hot months 2,4-D vaporizes and can drift up to 14 miles. Right now, trees and shrubs and gardens may be suffering leaf curl or brown out, and most owners don't realize why. Specialty crop growers are particularly concerned because 2,4-D spray from their commodity crop neighbors can destroy their entire operation. The Commission agenda is at Douglas County Commission Agendas.
