201105020 Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - EAT LOCAL FRIDAYS IN THE CROSSROADS

Fellow Food Revolutionists & Dirt-Diggin' Devils -

This is your utterly exhausted (and dedicated!) Farmer Brooke with my weekly dose of local-organic "righteous rhetoric".  The BADSEED Farmers Market will be bangin' this Friday from 4-9 PM with glorious spring produce, free-range eggs, grass-fed meats, artisan cheese, rustic breads, raw honey, micro-roasted coffee, micro-brewed sodas, and more!!!!  Yummy in my oh so pregnant tummy......

Okay, Okay.......

I am going to be perfectly honest with you (because my weekly e-mails are not in fact one big marketing scheme!!!).  I'm not feelin' the "food revolution" this week.  Sometimes the "agrarian dream" can blow up in your face and Mother Nature can kick your sorry ass!!  I am having one of those weeks from "farmer hell".  I won't go into detail.  I think the science-related specifics of my crop failures would only interest fellow-farmers or agricultural extension agents.  Let's just say farming new land with foreign dirt is no easy game and Dan and I are feeling like worn out mules without a hope in the world!  My "pastoral vision" is in the toilet right now and I just wish my damn ethics didn't keep from living an EASY American Life like everyone else!!

Alright.....negative ranting is officially over!!  Thanks for listening. (I needed that)

Anyway, on a more positive note, this Friday's market will be FRUITFUL and so will the FUTURE.  Read on for some TOTALLY AWESOME up-coming openings and classes brought to you by the "badseeds".  Mark your calendars and SPREAD THE DIRT

You can experience them all in this “jam-packed” class with 4 distinctive methods: using pectin, sugarless pectin, no cook pectin, and finally the old fashioned way of cooking the fruit and sugar down until it sets into a wonderful preserve.

SEXY VEGGIE OF THE WEEK

This week's runner-up is Tender Green Japanese Mustard.
This Gorgeous Green Goddess is not your typical mustard.  In fact she is a coveted heirloom crossed with spinach making her one of the mildest mustards on the gourmet market!!  If you like your greens, you will LOVE this one.  These flat, smooth, flavorful leaves can be eaten raw, steamed, or stir-fried.  Find these lovely ladies in big ole' bunches for only $3!!!

This week's grand-prize-winner (....drum roll please) is the totally kinky
French Breakfast Radish!!!!!  These glowing red elongated beauties have a splash of stark white at their tips making them quite the "eye catcher".  Their flavor is mild with a cool-crisp texture that is utterly delectable.  These radiant radishes are a joy to harvest. Pulling their 3 inch long, brightly colored bodies from the rich black earth is incredibly satisfying.....(only second to sinking your teeth into their crunchy flesh)!!!.  This will sadly be the last of my crop for a couple weeks, so make sure to snatch em' up now!!!

Pictures are attached.  You know the drill - Print em' out, blow em' up, and plaster them all over the men's room!!

EDIBLE FOREST GARDEN DESIGN WORKSHOP ¤ K.C.C.U.A.
Sunday, 22 May 2011,

ALERT! **NO WALK-INS ON SUNDAY**
EDIBLE FOREST GARDEN DESIGN WORKSHOP
REGISTRATIONS CLOSED - **WORKSHOP FULL**
Sunday, 22 May

Rising food prices due to rising energy prices have sparked a wide interest in urban farming and local/regional food.  The Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture has been growing annual vegetables for many years and helping K.C. urban farmers to make small-scale urban agriculture more profitable.  However, with funding from the Audubon Society in alliance with Toyota, the KCCUA has recentlyembarked on a permaculture food forest project, to grow perennial tree and fruit crops.

In order to use this food forest as a catalyst for increased urban permaculture, the KCCUA will be holding a design workshop with local permaculture teachers and practitioners.  Workshop presenters will be: Michael Almon,Matt BunchCathy BylinowskyDaniel DermitzelSteve Mann, and Steve Moring.  The workshop will cover theory and design of edible forest gardens, including a model design exercise.  For more info go to KCCUA Food Forest, or call (913) 831-2444.

COAL CARES ¤ PEABODY COAL GETS PUNKED

"The Yes Men, that prankster-activist group that has ruined many a corporate executive's day, have struck again.  This time their target is the notorious Peabody Coal Company, which operates environmentally devastating mountaintop removal mining sites in West Virginia and has strip mining operations in Arizona.  It may take a minute to realize that the web site for Coal Cares is a fake.  Designed to look like a website for a Peabody-funded nonprofit, the faux charity offers free "Puff-Puff" designer inhalers for kids living within 200 miles of a coal plant."

"We all know that risk is a part of life.  What isn't risky?  Crossing the street is risky--you could get hit by a car.  Eating a chicken is risky--you could choke on one of its bones.  Indeed, there are now a wide array of techniques and technologies for mitigating the risks associated with coal, such as the financial--fiduciary devices to reduce the risk to investors.  At least one thing is clear: although sheer numbers of deaths associated with coal may be larger, the varieties of death due to solar and wind could well go through the roof."  Laugh 'til you cry atCoal Cares | "Clean" Energy.

FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI NUCLEAR POWER PLANT ¤ DAY 67 UPDATE
Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) finally admitted that, in spite of having poured 11 million litres of water into Unit #1, forty percent of the fuel rods have been exposed to air and have melted.  It is now considered likely that the molten pool of radioactive fuel has burned a hole through the bottom of the containment vessel, causing water to leak.  Temperatures inside the reactor remain above the boiling point (as they do in Units #2 and #3 as well).  More details at Core Meltdown at Fukushima Unit #1.

Meanwhile, responding to the crisis at Fukushima, the Chinese have decided to shelve plans for vast expansion of its nuclear energy, and have set a course to greatly increase production of renewable energy.  New policies include reducing carbon intensity by 17 percent by 2015, with a high priority on nonfossil fuel energy sources.

China is emerging as a pacesetter in solar and wind technology, a fact that just might spur the U.S. to respond in kind.  China currently produces half the world's solar panels, and reportedly installed three times as much wind-power capacity as the United States last year.  China could dominate the rapidly growing and crucial world market for green technology, leaving a rust belt America wedded to dirty coal, oil and water-slurping shale gas extraction.  Read more at - The New Sputnik - Chinese Renewable Energy.

has identified gaps in the government's data, however, and nuclear watchdogs are concerned that public officials are not telling Americans the whole story.
You can also read the latest reports at - Nuclear Crisis in Japan - Updates.  If you agree that our climate solutions don't need nuclear energy, you might consider signing the following - A Simple Statement On Nuclear Power and Climate Change.

Douglas County Commission

 Just warming up...

This Wednesday at Westport Road and Wyoming Street, three blocks east of State Line, we'll have a variety of local goodness for your perusal and pleasure.  The farmers are just too busy outside planting, weeding and picking to let us in on all they'll be bringing.  We do know we'll have salad greens and cooking greens, lamb, beef, eggs, breads, plants, soaps, art and much more.  For the kids we'll be starting a book project-bring the youths to the market tent for details.  Now is a great time to talk to a farmer about your gardening questions.  They have plenty of experience and are happy to share.
