Funky First Friday Farmers' Market ~ BADSEED - Kansas City, Mo

ATTENTION PRECIOUS "EATERS" & FAR-OUT "FOOD REVOLUTIONISTS"  -

OOOOOH BABY......there has never been a "riper" time for URBAN AGRICULTURE
LOCAL FOOD.  For Farmer Brooke & Farmer Dan, this Friday & Saturday is the CLIMAX of our efforts as rebel farmers, agrarian urbanites, and community activists!!  We have been working towards this day since late last August when we began cultivating our 13.5 acre RAW piece of land in the heart of KCMO (right about the time I unknowingly conceived my child).  Nine months later (baby still in belly) we have transformed our blood, sweat, and tears into gorgeous fields of organic vegetables, an antique apple and pear orchard, chestnuts, peaches, plums, pastures full of heritage chickens, geese, ducks, and the list goes on....

It all comes to a head this weekend!!  Join your favorite gang of growers this Friday at the BADSEED Funky Farmers Market for a SPECIAL EVENT

to honor our market and celebrate all urban farmers, markets, and food revolutionaries in Kansas City.  The festivities will begin around 4:00 and last until about 5:00.  The market will go on as normal, but get here early and don’t miss this special hour as BADSEED and all of KC gets some serious "locavore love".   The veggies will still be sexy, the food will be funky-fresh, and the farmers will all be friendly, BUT this hour of love will only happen once.  SO COME EARLY and beat the First Friday crowd to help us celebrate this special occasion!!!!

And it doesn't stop there...

Come Saturday, slap your sunscreen on, and join us from 2-6 PM at the
GRAND OPENING of URBAVORE URBAN FARM

(one of the largest urban farms in the nation just 5 miles east of the Plaza!!).  We'll be selling urban-grown goodness straight from the field at our weekly Farmstand and launching

.

Festivities will include: LIVE MUSIC, FRESHER THAN FRESH SNOWCONES!!FARM TOURS, COMPOST Education, and KIDS Activities (baby chicks, geese, and ducks!).

Address and map is as follows:

URBAVORE URBAN FARM5500 Bennington Avenue, KCMO 64129  (click for map!!)

Compost Program in a Nut Shell:

This is a FREE city-wide program that will accept ALL FOOD SCRAPS (including cooked foods, meat, and dairy) as well as limited yard waste (grass clippings and leaves).  These organic materials will be composted in large windrows on-site.  Finished compost will be applied liberally over URBAVORE's vegetable and orchard grounds and be "fed" back to the community in the form of luscious organic produce at our weekly
Farmstand which will run every Saturday, June-October, 2-6 PM.

It is our goal to utilize the city's organic waste (keeping it out of landfills and waterways) while meeting the demand of healthy, organic, whole FOODS that are hard to come by on KC's east side.  We will be making this food affordable at our weekly farmstand through the Beans & Greens Program which doubles consumer's food stamp dollars!!

Again, the Grand Opening is this Saturday, 2-6 PM.  Farmstand will continue every Saturday through October.  Compost Drop is year-round, Wed - Sat, 9-6 PM.  Confused??  Need Directions??  Visit our Website at www.badseedkc.com!!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST - Today, May 31st, is my birthday!!!  I am 29 going on 92!....(or atleast that's how my pregnant farmer bones feel).  Needless to say, I didn't get to celebrate today and I plan to drop dead come Sunday!!.....so our only chance to "party" is this Saturday at the Grand Opening!  BYOB....and don't forget to bring one for me and the baby!

Okay, enough already.....let's get back on track with our normal "farmers market jive".  Without further ado:

SEXY VEGGIE OF THE WEEK

This week's Runner-Up is KILLER KALE in RED RUSSIANWINTER BORE, & RED BORE !!  Mama says "EAT YOUR GREENS" and chomping down on some oh so sexy, oh so hearty, oh so delicious Killer Kale is a good place to start.  Why you ask???  Well, Kale happens to be one of the most nutritious greens on the market with powerful antioxidant properties.  (stop spending those ridiculous dollars on California-grown organic blueberries at Whole Foods and get your antioxidant fix with a nice big bunch of local kale instead!!)  For all you "health-foodies" - Kale is also rich in beat carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, and calcium.  Get this - (particularly when chopped or minced) kale is said to contain sulforaphane which is a chemical that has anti-cancer properties!!!  So much for "an apple a day......", right!  How about a big bunch of kale simmering all sexy-like in your saute pan with loads of local butter and aromatic spices......mmmmm.  Farmer Brooke & Farmer Dan have a pretty wicked kale crop this year as do Lew and Destiny at Herb'n Garden so we should be able to supply your demand, folks!  Get it while the weather is cool......once the heat kicks in, kale kicks out.

This week's Grand-Prize-Winner is the totally outrageous, utterly irresitable, radiant and ravishing

RAINBOW CHARD!!!.

Talk about SEX......this "veggie pervert" can simply not resist those succulent, giant, green leaves staring me down in the field with NEON multi-colored stalks in deep red, fuschia, canary yellow, burnt orange, and cotton candy pink.  These sexy beings protruding from the rich black earth are truly a sight to behold!  Just wait till you get em' home and into the kitchen.....that's when the "love making" really begins.  Rainbow Chard is a favorite crop for Farmer Dan and I.  We love growing it and we love eating it.  I will have a limited supply this week, as I want those gorgeous leaves to get really MASSIVE before I cut like crazy, BUT there will be more abundance in weeks to come.....
**For those of you who are new to preparing chard, here is a link to a nice, straight-forward recipe -  Rainbow Chard with Lemon, Capers & Parmesan.  However, just use whatever ingredients you have on-hand and don't be afraid to improvise.  For example, instead of lemon and capers use pine nuts and yellow raisins!  Have fun.

SEXY Photos are attached.  You know the drill - print them out, blow them up, and plaster them all over the men's room!

SAY NO TO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL FOOD SAFETY RULES ~~ ACTION ALERT from the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC)

Say No To One-Size-Fits-All Food Safety Rules!

Remember the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) that passed last year? We won a hard fought battle, securing appropriate food safety rules for small-to-midsized farms and processors producing fresh and healthy food for local and regional markets.

Now, out of left field, a marketing agency – the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) -- has issued a proposed national
food safety rule for spinach, lettuce, and cabbage, despite the fact that AMS does not have food safety jurisdiction or staff.

And the protections for the small and medium sized farms that make up our nations vibrant local food system? …. Not there.

The most powerful “Big Ag” players in the leafy green industry are pushing the National Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement (NLGMA) and there is little trust among small-to-medium, diversified, and organic farmers that this will serve them well.   The sellers, processors, or distributors that sign on to the rule will compel farmers they purchase from to comply with its standards. The rule adds a second and conflicting layer of food safety standards and audits on top of FDA food safety rules.

This confusing and duplicative rule could effectively shut small and mid-sized farmers out   of the leafy greens market.

LAWRENCE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN ¤ N.E. SECTOR PLAN
Wednesday, 1 June 2011, 6:30pm  -  RESCHEDULED from 11 May
Douglas County Commission
1100 Massachusetts St., Lawrence KS 66044

This sector plan grew out of the fight to save prime agricultural soils north of the Kansas River that are threatened by urban development.  Officials have now acknowledged the importance of Capability I & II Soils, but have been adverse to specific code language to protect them.  Concerns that still remain in this sector plan are:  stronger plan elements to preserve Capability I & II Soils, Stormwater flooding of North Lawrence from expanded urbanization, extreme cost associated with implementing the North Lawrence Drainage Study, infrastructure costs for development within the regulatory floodplain, floodways, and flood prone land.  To read more go to N.E. Sector Planning Process

FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI NUCLEAR POWER PLANT ¤ DAY 81 UPDATE

As this nuclear disaster continues unabated, and in many aspects gets worse, it is difficult to provide a synopsis.  Because excellent coverage is already supplied, we suggest readers avail themselves of reports from the Nuclear Information and Resource Service - Nuclear Crisis in Japan - UpdatesReader Supported News - Disaster in Japan - 21 March 2011, and Fairewinds Associates Updates on Fukushima.

And while Japan is now planning to increase solar energy fifteen-fold by 2030, similar to China's and Germany's move away from nuclear energy, Obama is throwing caution to the winds.  Not only has he pledged $36 billion in loan guarantees for new nuclear plants, but he intends to create the "Clean Energy Development Administration" to bankroll nuclear plants.  After Memorial Day, the Senate Energy Committee is to vote on CEDA, and you can contact them at No CEDA with nuclear funding.

GM TOXINS FOUND IN THE BLOOD OF 93% OF UNBORN BABIES

A landmark study found 93 per cent of blood samples taken from pregnant women and 80 per cent from umbilical cords tested positive for traces of the chemicals.

Millions of acres in North and South America are planted with GM corn containing the toxins, which is fed in vast quantities to farm livestock around the world - including Britain. However, it is now clear the  toxins designed to kill crop pests are reaching humans and babies in the womb - apparently through food.

To date the industry has always argued that if these toxins were eaten by animals or humans they would be destroyed in the gut and pass out of the body, thus causing no harm. Food safety authorities in Britain and Europe have accepted these assurances on the basis that GM crops are effectively no different to those produced using conventional methods.
But the latest study appears  to blow a hole in these claims  and has triggered calls for a ban on imports and a total overhaul of the safety regime for GM crops and food.  Most of the global research which has been used to demonstrate the safety of GM crops has been funded by the industry itself.

What's cookin'?

Food is beginning to burst from the Earth, zooming towards your plate.  Of course, you may want to prep it first.  If you need tips on how to fix up your choices from the market, look no further than the market stand.  A simple question such as, "What should I do with this Bok Choy?" will typically elicit a modest and useful response from the grower.  However, if other foodie customers are within earshot, you'll receive all sorts of exotic and delicious suggestions.  An exchange of ideas can give you a taste of another's kitchen culture.  Sharing these morsels is what the farmers' market is all about.
