"Volunteers reported they "had a blast" helping the low-income urban farmers..."

KU Med students help out KCK urban farmers

Send to friendSend to friend

Courtesy of Paul Grahovac

On Thursday, July 29, 14 University of Kansas Medical Center students descended on two vacant lots in northeast Kansas City, Kan., previously the site of drug houses, and in a torrent and flurry of work over a period of five hours weeded, harvested, washed, weighed, recorded, and packaged organically-grown vegetables to be sold in suburban farmers markets throughout the Greater Kansas City area.

Nineteen students worked at the New Roots for Refugees farm in the Juniper Gardens public housing project just off the Fairfax Exit on Interstate 70.

The other 35 students worked on eight other urban farms in the KCK area.

Diane Hentges, Director of the United Way of Wyandotte County Volunteer Center, made the match based on a smaller event she arranged this spring – after nine KUMC volunteers reported they "had a blast" helping the low-income urban farmers.

She recognized when she was contacted by Grahovac's Army of Volunteers that helping urban farmers was a worthwhile cause and volunteer opportunity.

Paul Grahovac's group is focused on helping urban farmers in KCK's inner-city -- the Oak Grove neighborhood around 5th & Quindaro.

"We knew we could handle 20 volunteers, but when Diane asked if we could handle up to 75, I got KCCUA involved," says Grahovac.

The Oak Grove Farm Business Program is led by Isaac Jefferson and is an Affiliate Farm of the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture (KCCUA) located in KCK.

Katherine Kelley, KCCUA Executive Director, quickly tasked Ami Freeberg and the rest of her staff with allocating volunteers to ten urban farms in Wyandotte County.

"With the growing interest in healthy eating, chemical-free vegetables, and local food production, I think we're going to see more and more people want to be part of it through volunteering," said Grahovac, who led the Oak Grove KUMC volunteers when they met at 5th and Haskell in KCK.

KDHE PUBLIC HEARINGS THIS WEEK ON SUNFLOWER ELECTRIC COAL PLANT
Permit public hearings:
Monday, 2 August 2010, 2:00pm & 6:30pm
Blue Valley Northwest Highschool, 135th and Switzer, Overland Park (find a map here)

Wednesday, 4 August 2010, 2:00pm & 6:30pm
Highway Patrol Training Center Auditorium, 2025 East Iron, Salina (find a map here)

Thursday, 5 August 2010, 2:00pm & 6:30pm
801 Campus Drive, Garden City (find a map here)

Advocates for clean renewable energy, rural economic development, and green jobs advancement are hoping to convince the Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) to deny the latest permit application by Sunflower Power for a coal fired power plant in Holcomb Kansas.

After wasting two years of Kansas Legislature time spent debating, revising and finally defeating two coal fired power stations, a proposed Sunflower Electric 895mw Holcomb Station coal plant is up for new permit hearings. Governor Sebelius vetoed the initial coal plants, but within a week of assuming the Governorship, Mark Parkinson made a deal to allow Sunflower to file another application. Meanwhile, serious and productive plans are languishing for wind power support, transmission line upgrades, consumer financing for renewable energy, true net metering, etc.

Kansas has a choice of a dirty energy path (clean coal is an oxymoron), or a clean energy path. The Great Plains Alliance for Clean Energy says it best: "The dirty path would saddle us with a fifty year commitment to imported, dirty coal with an influx of temporary construction jobs starting in about six years, limited permanent jobs starting in about ten years, and no access to the coming renewable energy economy. The clean path would open up investment in native, cleaner fuels like natural gas and wind that will provide Kansans ongoing job creation, broad revenue opportunities, and the foundation to attract manufacturing and service industries for generations to come…starting in less than two years."

Go to the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Kansas web site to learn more info about submitting comments to the KDHE.

NO TROOST COMMUNITY MARKET 7/31/2010
Return next week on 8/7/2010

Farmers' Community Market at Brookside ~ SATURDAYS ~ 8am-1pm

Thank you for being friends of the market this year. We are having a wonderful season because of YOU!! Some of our vendors haven’t checked in this week, which doesn’t mean they won’t be there. It probably means that harvesting is taking more and more time, and the bounty will be plentiful at Saturday’s market!

Here are some things you can definitely look forward to:

Bear Creek Farms

Another wet week - we are on the "inch a day program" which is lovely when it cools things off, but, oh my, it makes growing tomatoes tough. I'm quite sure we now every tomato disease known to man, despite our weekly organic spray program. The weeds are taller than I am since we can't get any machinery into the fields, and we've all developed the cutest little webbed toes from wading throught the water - next year we are planning on growing rice!

Despite it all we'll have plenty of summer heirloom tomatoes, lovely bell peppers, fresh fragrent basil, crisp cool cabbage, okra (everyone should have at least one big platter of fried okra every summer), just dug yellow and purple potatoes, shiny dark purple eggplant, and more.

As always, we appreciate so much those of you that support the Brookside Market and the farmers who work so hard to produce the lovely produce you see there every week. It's been a tough summer for all of them. Thank You!

Lonnie, Jeanna, Logan and Makayla
Robbins and Jim

Bread of Life - Hello Brookside Friends,
Again we have had another hot week in the Bakery but I am hoping the rains will cool things a little by Friday.

Bryce and Lili have had a good time at Brookside Market and it seems to be the high light of there trips out here. Thank you for making them feel welcomed.

Our usual breads an,snacks and cookies will be available this week. The chocolate chip espresso cookies were a hit and will be back on Saturday.

Our burritos will have potatoes, kale, onion and squash in them this week. The Benidict Builders sausage will be in the Sausage burritos. Come early before we sell out. Quiches, coffee and scones will also make for a good market breakfast.

See you on Saturday,
Luke, Chris, Gabe,Bryce and Lili

From the KC Center for Urban Ag’s Community Farm

Some would say this is the most wonderful time of the year with tomatoes and green beans and eggplant and the markets all over the country in full swing. Others would say, it’s too darn hot. I think they are both right.
The tomatoes are ripening like Christmas tree ornaments all over the field. We can barely keep up and can barely push our way past the stacks ready for you at market this weekend…but we’ll manage because oh too quickly the stacks will be only a memory…
for now, this week, we’ll bring another half ton or so in many colors, sizes and shapes for you to choose from
And
Green beans, tri-color beans, soybeans, eggplant, sweet peppers, hot peppers, red peppers, green peppers, purple peppers, orange peppers and yellow peppers.
Some leeks, onions, scallions, shallots.
Beets and carrots.
Potatoes of many sizes, colors and shapes.
Summer squash in many sizes, colors and shapes.
Cucumbers in many sizes, colors and shapes (unfortunately).
Tomatillos.
Microgreens, purslane, salad mix, Funky Fresh, arugula (don’t know how), Malabar spinach, mustard greens, kale and Swiss chard.
Basil.
Lots of herbs.
And recipes for everything!
Sweat you there/oops, I mean SEE you there!

Wells Family Farms – Kim will be there with all of her usual yummy and interesting stuff.
