Hi everyone! It was not to bad out today, I do have faith it will be warm again! Tomorrow we (Wells Family Farms and Alice and Marvin) with our great grass fed beef and Alice as usual will have lots of home baked goodies.

Remember, with the products Alice and Marvin bring, they grow the grain, they do the harvest and grinding and then she does the baking! You can't get more home made than that!

Our beef is also raised by us, so you can come and visit the farm if you ever have the time or want!

For market this Saturday at 39th and Genessee, in the parking lot of the Twisted Sister Gift Shop, we will be set up from 11 am to 1 pm. Alice and Marvin usually only stay until 12 noon, so come early for their goodies.

Don't forget those special gifts you need from time to time, Marvin does some beautiful work with his lathe and tools.

Mercedes Taylor-Puckett, KRC’s Farmers’ Market Project Coordinator, said the “bigger and better” 2009 conference is titled "Growing Together" and is open to all involved with farmers’ markets whether as a producer, market manager, board member or interested citizen.

Charuth and Kevin Loth, of ShadowBrook Farm in Lincoln, Nebraska, are the conference’s featured speakers. The Loths operate a family-owned diversified vegetable farm incorporating cattle, dairy goats and flowers into the 34-acre, organic farm's rotation plan. The couple participates in three farmers' markets and the Nebraska Food Cooperative, as well as operating a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and on-farm market and dairy.

Steve Moris, Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety Program Manager, will discuss the recent consolidation of food safety oversight to KDA and review the rules and regulations affecting farmers’ market products. Representatives from Kansas Department of Commerce, Rural Development will also present resources to help grow farmers’ markets and value-added businesses.

In addition, five afternoon breakout sessions will focus on topics including: cut flowers; launching or revitalizing your market; meat and dairy; marketing and display, and managers and boards.

Specific topics scheduled during the breakout sessions include: “Direct Marketing Opportunities for Meat Producers” by Jeff Adair, New Grass Bison Co.; “Know Your Customer: Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication” by Lane McConnell, Missouri Department of Agriculture; “Born to Bloom: What to Grow for Beautiful Bouquets” presented by Brian Henry and Jozie Schike, Earth Flowers; “Issues and Opportunities Roundtable and Grow Your Market Workshop” by Jerry Jost, KRC Grow Your Farmers Market Workshop Facilitator, and “Capturing Your Market Share” by Jill Elmers, Moon on the Meadow Farm.

Markets and vendors are encouraged to share their experiences in "Flew or Flopped" presentations during lunch and to bring examples of their promotional materials.

Registration to cover the conference materials, continental breakfast and lunch is $20 per person. On the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birthday, the Library welcomes Dr. Wes Jackson for a discussion titled Lincoln and the Homestead Act: An Attempt at Democracy or Manifest Destiny? on Thursday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

Jackson will discuss the intended purpose of the Homestead Act, what worked, what didn’t, and how and why homesteading ultimately ended.

Jackson is president of The Land Insitute, based in Salina, Kansas. His writings include papers and books. His most recent work – The Virtues of Ignorance: Complexity, Sustainability, and the Limits of Knowledge – was co-edited with William Vitek and released by the University of Kentucky Press in 2008. Jackson received his bachelor’s degree from Kansas Wesleyan, his master’s from the University of Kansas and his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. In the November 2005 issue, Smithsonian named Jackson one of “35 Who Made a Difference.”

The work of the Land Institute has been featured in The Atlantic Monthly, Audubon, National Geographic, Time Magazine, the MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour, and National Public Radio’s All Things Considered.

Description: The food system plays a central role in the health of our citizens. It dictates access, quality, affordability and the nutritional value of the food we consume. The state of our health is inextricably related to the quality of our food system.

Unfortunately, healthy, nutritious, accessible and affordable food eludes many people, which, in turn, undermines health. Gaps include hunger and food insecurity, lack of fair prices for farmers, lack of fresh local food in schools and institutional settings, lack of full service grocery stores in low income communities, lack of knowledge on what food is nutritious, and lack of knowledge on how to prepare nutritious meals. Positive changes in public policy and awareness will offer Kansas City and the surrounding region its best chance to improve our local food system.

The goals of the February 2009 Healthy Food Policy Forum are the following:

To educate participants on the connection between health, the food system and pressure points in federal farm policy;
To communicate how food policy and food marketing impact kids health;
To showcase the Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition (FPC) and its strategic plan; and
To increase understanding of healthy food issues for vulnerable populations, especially children.

The Kansas City Public Library hosts food policy expert Marion Nestle for a presentation called Red Scare: China and the New Global Food System on Wednesday, February 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Truman Forum at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

This illustrated presentation details the far-reaching effects of the new global food system and uncovers unexpected connections between food supplies for pets, farm animals, and humans. As detailed in her new book Pet Food Politics: The Chihuahua in the Coal Mine, Nestle traces tainted pet food ingredients back to their source in China, precipitating the largest recall of consumer products in U.S. history in 2007. What began as a problem “merely” for cats and dogs soon became an issue of tremendous concern to everyone.

Nestle is a professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University. A former policy adviser in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, her current research focuses on the scientific, economic, and social influences on food choice.

The event is co-sponsored by KC Healthy Kids, a charitable foundation focused on promoting fit and healthy kids in Greater Kansas City. Pet Food Politics will be available for sale, and the author will sign copies purchased during the event.

The food system plays a central role in the health of our citizens. It dictates access, quality, affordability and the nutritional value of the food we consume. The state of our health is inextricably related to the quality of our food system.

We are pleased to invite you to the 2009 Healthy Food Policy Forum on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at The American Royal. This forum serves as the capstone to 24 months of work by the Healthy Food Policy Initiative, examining how we can improve the food system here in Kansas City. At this forum, you will hear from local and national speakers about policy and financing barriers to healthy foods. We will also unveil the strategic plan for the newly established Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition. Join us and learn about exciting developments happening locally and nationally for our food system.

The GreenZone was a successful new feature additon to theKansas City Remodeling Show in 2008. The GreenZone is a 50,000 sq. ft. area of products, services and ideas for eco-conscious living and sustainable living. Non-profit organizations will be on hand to promote everything from recycling and energy conservation to sustainable lifestyles and alternative fuels. Commercial vendors will showcase products ranging from solar collectors and wind energy generators to thermal windows and high-efficiency home appliances.

The GreenZone will also feature several educational exhibits on experimental programs and theoretical projects to support eco-conscious living.

It is the goal of the Remodeling Show's GreenZone to become the largest yearly exhibition of "green" products, services and ideas in the Midwest. We encourage non-profit organizations, commercial vendors and educational institutions who are interested in or promote related products, services or ideas to contact the Remodeling Show to participate in the GreenZone exhibiton.
