KC's "TIME FOR LUNCH" Slow Food USA National Eat-In - at Brookside on MONDAY, Sep. 7th, 2009

Currently poor quality, overly processed food products are mandated in most of the schools of our children. If you feel that it's a basic human right to have good quality, real food available in schools, now is the time to advocate those beliefs.

On behalf of a group of concerned citizens, I would like to invite you to participate in a public

potluck on Monday, September 7 in Kansas City, Missouri. I hope you will consider joining us on this important day.

A vast community in the Kansas City Metro area is concerned about the food our children eat at school. In the midst of a national obesity epidemic, our schools struggle to serve anything but the fast food and junk food that endangers children’s health. This year, the Child Nutrition Act, which is the law that determines what 30 million children eat at school every day, is up for reauthorization, providing us with more opportunity to fix this problem. By giving schools the resources to serve real food, we can build a strong foundation for our children’s health. We can teach them healthy habits that will last them through life. We can make a down payment on health care reform. We can do all of this but only if we help our legislators connect the dots and provide community awareness to an issue that people may not think about everyday.

On September 7, a group of Missouri constituents are organizing a public potluck (we call it an “Eat-In”) to demonstrate that the Kansas City Metro area is ready to provide our children with real food at school. This event is just one of hundreds taking place across America as part of the Time for Lunch National Eat-In.

What: Kansas City "Time for Lunch" Eat-In (community potluck)

Date: Labor Day- Monday, September 7, 2009

When: 12 noon- ?

Where: Border Star Montessori School-near the playground

6321 Wornall Road, KCMO

To stick with the ritual of a potluck, please bring a home-cooked dish to contribute to the community lunch feast. We will also have a solar cooker and grill (s?) on site as well. You are also invited to bring reusable utensils, plates, and cups, along with a contagious smile. Please be aware this potluck is NOT exclusive to parents or Missouri constituents, so pass this information on and join us if you live nearby.

At the Eat-In you can call legislators in your district and share with them how you feel in regards to real food in schools, meet local legislators who will be at the Eat-In to show their support, eat good food and mingle with community on a day reserved for relaxation, educate yourself about the Child Nutrition Act and the National School Lunch Program, and perhaps even more.....all while advocating a good cause!

For more information about the campaign, or to learn how you can advocate for and be of service to this cause, please contact Rochelle at 816.392.4546.

If you are affiliated with an environmental organization; teacher's union; youth organization; public health or fitness group; Church or faith group; good food business or restaurant; neighborhood, community or civic group; an organization that works on hunger, food security and social justice;and if you are a teacher, an education advocate, a farmer, an advocate for healthcare reform....... your participation at the actual Eat-In event is welcomed!
Please contact Rochelle at 816.392.4546 to get more info about contributing like-minded efforts through participation.

Feel free to join our planning group on ning.com: http://slowfoodbrookside.ning.com

If you can't join us, here are some other things you can do:

*Tell your legislators in Congress that it’s time to give schools the resources to serve real food. Contact your legislators by writing them a letter or making a phone call-http://www.congress.org/congressorg/directory/congdir.tt.

*Sign the Time for Lunch petition at:http://slowfoodusa.org/timeforlunch

To learn more about Time for Lunch and the National Eat-In on Sept. 7, please check out the campaign web site: http://slowfoodusa.org/timeforlunch.

"School lunch isn’t just about the food. It’s also about what food means in culture and communities. A good school lunch program teaches kids that food matters—how it’s produced, what gets done with it, and how it is consumed. These are important lessons that ought to be in every curriculum. "

BROOKSIDE - The Community Farmers Market at Brookside (KCMO) - for Market Day (SATURDAYS)

Greetings Market Friends,

Despite the lovely autumn weather, summer is still here and our vendors have the produce to prove it!

The weather looks to be perfect this Saturday , so throw on a jacket (!!) and join us. For dandy recipes and tips on cooking, eating and preserving green beans, visit Missouri Extension at the community tent.

Happy eating!

From our vendors:

Bread of Life

Hi Brookside friends,

We had a very busy week moving Grandma Ruth to the farm. She has not lived on a farm since she was 12 and I think she will miss the city quite a bit but Josiah and Luke plan on keeping her busy and amused with all of their antics. One thing for sure it is never dull around here, so Grandma will be at least occupied with our happenings.

Our burritos this week will have Josiahs' eggs, potatoes, squash
onions, swiss chard and farm fresh eggs. Our meat burritos will have Benedict Builders sausage added to them. Quiches, muffins, breads, cinnamon rolls, cookies and scones will also be available.
Will, enjoy the day and come by and see us,

Luke,Chris and Kathy

News from KCCUA

Thanks for all the great comments last week about the farm’s stand! I agree, the colors out there now are the best of the season. Sometimes as I harvest---especially the ripe sweet peppers---I am overcome with awe. Where did those intense colors come from?!!! I’ve never seen red so red! The Islander peppers are really an eyeful…they start out pale lavender, take time to turn dark purple, then just when I want to pick it I notice a hit of yellow, leave it and the next time down the row it is swirls of yellow, orange, purple and red---mind-blowing!

So, this Saturday, you know we’ll bring along those deliciously RIPE SWEET PEPPERS and some equally eye-popping HOT PEPPERS. EGGPLANT from the straight ahead Italian varieties of Nadia and Black Beauty to the snow white, creamy and delicious Clara, the neon purple dancers and my new favorite the Louisiana Long Green. No peeling needed ---one of the nice things about ORGANIC produce---so no waste! Just slice and grill or quarter and bake! OKRA is not just for cooking anymore…have you tried it raw? I’m munching them as I write this email. Really. TOMATOES will fill a couple of tables, but come early! We still have many varieties, just not many of each variety. The cherry tomatoes are tasting very sweet from this cool, wet weather! If you need to bake a birthday cake or want cupcakes for an after school treat, you might pick up a SUMMER SQUASH. We’ve been indulging in many baked goodies because of all the squash and with good excuse. CUCUMBERS for lunch box snacks.

WINTER SQUASH is just coming on. Ya! LEEKS, SCALLIONS, ONIONS and GARLIC. Stock up on GARLIC! It’s a real deal and is going fast! We’ll bring a new crop of long, perfect FILET BEANS and festive TRI-COLOR BEANS as well as the last of the EDAMAME for a while. The RADISHES are full and crisp this week and mild enough to eat one after the other. CARROTS for your daily dose of beta carotene and BABY BEETS to clean your blood. Anyone for POTATOES? We’ll have Russian Fingerlings, many reds and some Desiree varieties. Perfect for a warm, one-pot dinner! We have many herbs including BASIL, LEMONGRASS, PARSLEY and ROSEMARY. Maybe it’s time to try MALABAR SPINACH to satisfy your taste for greens. We’ll have some micromix next week. PURSLANE is also a new one to try. And for the first time all season we’ll bring SQUASH BLOSSOMS for pretty and for stuffing!

We’ll be looking for you this Saturday. Can’t say whether you should wear rain boots, flip-flops or Uggs. Guess we’ll just wing that part of the day…makes life interesting!

Thanks for reading!

Alicia

Blue Door Farm

Sorry to say I will not be at market for a few weeks folks - the deer have wiped me out for now. Hope you enjoy the great produce from my fellow vendors. I'll put a shout out for the Red Noodle long beans that PayLay with the New Roots program had (and I hope still has!). I sauteed some up last week with garlic and red peppers and they were wonderful. Give them a try.

Laura

Unfortunately we'll not be at market this Saturday - again. So sorry, but this seems to be the summer of family crises. Guess that's what happens when you get older!

Enjoy what looks like a perfect Saturday! See you all next week!

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - FRIDAYS in the CROSSROADS

Dear Eaters,

To me, it seems absurd that a group of our neighbors should so greatly fear a small, organic farm in a suburban backyard. They would sooner seek its demise than walk through its open gates to see it firsthand.

Amidst the worst economic times in recent memory, people fear for their jobs, for their homes, for their marriages, for their very way of living. So we should not be surprised when a long-time neighbor tells us that she fears she may have to move back into her second home if she cannot sell it due to our organic efforts.

Afraid of declining property values and an invasion from poorer black neighborhoods to the east, our politically powerful neighbors fingered us for troublemakers and demanded the city do something. The officials in the city issued us with numerous violations, despite our compliance with city codes, because they fear for their jobs.

How many of us stay in jobs we dislike for fear of losing health or retirement benefits?

To be free is to live without fear. I have lived in America for 27 years. I have visited Cuba, China, Europe, and Peru, and I find this definition of freedom to be the truest. And yet, I believe that Americans are less free than ever before. And we are more fearful than ever before.

We are fearful not because of the economy, not because of the value of our homes, not because of our jobs. We are fearful because we have lost the ability to control our own destinies. We have lost the ability to do for ourselves. For if we have the ability to feed ourselves, to build our own homes, to sew our own clothes and to mend our own wounds, what have we left to fear?

Answer: Natural disasters, and the government. These are my greatest fears.

So, on a brighter note, eat urban grown food while you still can! Come see the BADSEED Bandits this Friday from 4:30 - 9 PM and get some “illegally” grown goodies that won’t just fill your belly, they might even become addictive.

This Week, we’ve been caught RED-HANDED with the following items:

*Heirloom Tomatoes!!!! They won’t be here much longer. Get them before they’re gone for the season!

*Early Fall Arugula from the Herb’n Gardener!

*Late Summer Saute Mix with lemon sorrel, lime basil blossoms, & delicious sweet potato greens!

*Gourmet Potatoes, including French Fingerling and Purple Peruvian.

*Multicolored Sweet Peppers - Green, Red, Purple Bells, chocolate peppers, and stuffing peppers!!

*Heirloom Summer Squash & Zucchini – Costata Romanesca, French Scallop, Patty Pan, and other fantastic varieties.

*Russian Kale & Rainbow Chard– Brooke and I have been stuffing our mouths with tomatoes and forgot all about glorious greens; don’t miss these!

*Red Velvet Okra!!! – Never a more tender okra. Many of our customers eat this stuff raw!

*Orgasmic Eggplant – Long Japanese Eggplant, as well as beautiful Italian varieties that melt in the pan.

*Yard-Long Chinese Red Noodle Beans – You’ll regret buying any less than a pound.

*Sweet Savoy Cabbage & Red Cabbage – Fresh, tender and delicious!

*Hot Peppers from the fiery pits of hell, including the little devils themselves, Chinese Five Spice

*Onions, garlic, and other flavor bursting must-haves!!!

Also, heavenly GOAT CHEESE from Goatsbeard Farm including Greek Feta that will blow your mind, not to mention free-range eggs, bread, and baked goods from Bread of Life Bakery and organic, fair-trade coffee from Puddin' Head.

So cast your fears aside, leave your inhibitions in the minivan, and come on down to the Crossroads for a Funky Friday Night of Food and Fun with all the BADSEED Farmers.

Thanks for listening! We’ll see you soon.
