The goal of Green Drinks KC is pretty simple: good times shared among people working in, or interested in, environmental and sustainability issues.

These monthly events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have made friends, developed new ideas and had moments of serendipity. Most Green Drinks KC events feature plenty of time to socialize and network as well as a guest speaker with discussion on a different topic.

There is no pressure or commitment required. Show up to Green Drinks KC when you can, discuss what's on your mind and leave when you want.

Cheers!

Funky FIRST Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - A MUST ON FRIDAYS IN THE CROSSROADS

Hello "Conscious Consumers" of
Local Organic Flavor -

SUNSHINE, GLORIOUS SUNSHINE!!! Get ready to reap the benefits of this excellent weather with a sun-soaked bounty of "earthly delights"

this Friday from 4-8 PM
@ the
BADSEED Farmers Market
.

This last little bit of sun has given those cold and uninspired veggies sleeping in the field a wake up call! Suddenly everything is growing and greening up for one last party in your mouth before the season for field produce officially ends. SO GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT!

Speaking of what's HOT - our chickens are laying like crazy this past week and farm fresh eggs have been the number one item on the menu in the BADSEED household. I have been going a little overboard with too many omelets, herbed fritatas, fresh egg pastas, quiches, and (as an expression of my more festive side) FRESH EGGNOG!!! Holy cow! Talk about decadent. This stuff will blow your mind - made with farm fresh brown eggs, Shatto Milk & Cream, and fresh ground spices - this stuff makes the Holidays worth having.
Recipes for Eggnog and other festive, fall dishes are included at the end of this e-mail!

So, since it will be "first" Friday in the Crossroads, the market will be loaded up with Vendors and an awesome array of goodies, including some brand new vendors with some mouth-watering items:

1) Paul & Judy Miller with OYSTER & SHITAKE MUSHROOMS from Warrensburg,MO
(in stir-fry's, soups, sauces, and even scrambled eggs, a little bit of "fungi" can really turn a meal into something special)

2) John Wilhelm with locally foraged WALNUTS & PECANS from Grandview,MO
(Go nuts!! No fall menu is complete with out em'. Local Pecan Pie anyone???)

3) Stan & Carmen Biggs with Farm-Fresh PRODUCE from Bigg Blue Farm in Mosby,MO
(home-grown goodness from the rich-black earth of the heartland. Eat Up!)

And from your usual gang of gregarious growers:

FESTIVE FALL RECIPES:

Traditional Eggnog
For the most orgasmic EGGNOG imaginable be sure to use local and fresh ingredients that have not been tainted with any chemicals or industrial funk! You will taste a difference. The following recipe is a simple one. I tripled it....you should do the same!

Pumpkin Soup
This recipe comes from the lovely Emily Akins - a die-hard "local foodie" and a girl who has the guilty habit of buying the largest pumpkin at the market! (my kinda gal) She keeps a wonderful blog and features recipes using local foods. Here is a link to her Pumpkin Soup experience using our Japanese Pink Banana Squash:

Arugula Pesto
When the weather turns cold and Basil is no longer an option, Arugula is a peppery and perfectsubstitute. Arugula will be in season until we get a harsh freeze, so take advantage of it now.

WINTER MARKET at GRAND COURT - SATURDAYS - NOV 7 & 14, 2009

WINTER FARMER’S MARKET CELEBRATES
NEW COMMUNITY SPIRIT OPEN HOUSE

Kansas City, MO --- October 2009 -- The Farmer’s Winter Market of Grand Court is excited to announce that a new network of small growers will participate in a Grand Opening Celebration in cooperation with non-profit organizations. The events will be held on November 7 and 14, from 10 am - 1 pm, inside of the Grand Court Retirement Center at 501 W. 107th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. Mapquest link

“With the addition of new farmers and vendors, the Farmer’s Winter Market of Grand Court is able to offer residents just south of Kansas City a larger variety of fresh produce, meats, dairy and desserts” states Steven Quarles, Assistant Manager of Grand Court Farmer’s Market and a multi-generation farmer.

Market Volunteer Janet Hoyer states, “It is refreshing to work with good people who have compassion for the less fortunate. Their unseen individual charity efforts go beyond talk into making real social differences. These include services such as food bank donations, teaching gardening methods to special needs students, revitalizing urban areas for community gardens, helping local homeless people, and facilitating animal adoptions. Supporting America’s small farmers is a good value and investment that nourishes the community.”

Non-profit organizations at the event will include Urban Growth KC, H3 (Houses, Hearts, Hands), PigHeads Animal Rescue and The Cooperation Institute.

Event farmers and vendors include: Schenker Farms, NV Ranch, ShroomHeads Organic Farm, The Organic Garden, Rambler’s Ranch, The Little Muddy Farm, Three Spoons of Sugar, Puddin’ Head Coffee and Wellness World Organics.

Speakers will give free demonstrations on gardening, cooking, and information about local agricultural products. Brief talks about individual organizations will be given. The event will include an Open House time for conversation and questions. Coffee from Puddin’ Heads will be available. Farmer musician Vernon Quarles will provide musical entertainment. A local noted Harpist will provide soft background music for the event.

The Farmer’s Market of Grand Court was founded by Market Manager Tena Bellovich in October 2007 in an effort to provide a forum for small local farmers to sell their goods.

Information and updates can be found at:
www.FarmersMarketGrandCourt.com

(The KC Food Circle is listing this event on a provisional basis because many of the participating food producers are (or were) KCFC Member Growers. We are confident that the products provided at Grand Court will, for the most part, meet KC Food Circle standards.)

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - FRIDAYS in the CROSSROADS

Dearest "Consious Consumers" of Local Flavor -

The air is changing and the leaves are falling. Farmers Markets around town are closing up for the Winter months ahead. This can be a sad time for the "local foodie" or the "proactive parent" who seeks the freshest organic ingredients to bring to the table and feed the ones they love.

Well my famished friends, us crazy farmers at the BADSEED Market can calm those aching bellies. As you know we will be open all Winter long thru January 31st with free-range meats, artisan cheeses, fresh baked breads, baked goods, jams & jellies, winter greens, root vegetables, sweet potatoes, and more!!!

Please take note: our new Winter hours will be
every Friday from 4-8 PM.

It can be tempting during these cold times, due to convenience and hectic schedules, to "ditch" the weekly market and settle for the supermarket instead. But I urge you in these moments to remember the importance of eating well! Food is your medicine. Your body deserves wholesome foods grown with love in your immediate community by a face you have seen and can trust. Wasting your pay check away at Whole Foods Market just doesn't cut it. Industrial Organic Foods are not sprayed with certain pesticides, but they are still unethically grown: exploiting labor, resources, and fossil fuels during transport. By the time they reach your table they are no longer FRESH!! There is something truly remarkable about purchasing food from real people...real hands with real dirt under fingernails...real community & culture. The relationship between farmer and eater is a sacred one. So - LETS EAT!!!

This week we are lucky to have a couple NEW VENDORS including:

Green Dirt Farm - Weston, MO
*Notorious for their artisan Sheep's Cheeses and their pastured lamb cuts, Green Dirt is something Kansas City Eaters can be proud of!! Treat yourselves. You deserve it!!

Wells Family Farms - King City, MO
Everybody loves Kim Wells (she's a doll) with her certified organic, grass-finished BEEF. Happy cows mean happy people, so get your fill of America's heartland at it's finest!!!

As for your usual gang of gregarious GROWERS:

From BADSEED Farm - Southside, KCMO
The season is not over yet folks! The BADSEED's will have a plethora of "earthly delights" including varietalSWEET POTATOES, Heirloom CHEESE PUMPKINS perfect for PIES, MEAN GREENS like ARUGULA, DINO KALE,Rainbow CHARD, Spicy MUSTARDS, "Stir-Fry" MIX, Gourmet SALAD BOWLS, righteous ROOTS including BEETS,RADISHES, TURNIPS, Culinary HERBS, and more...
Load up before it is too late!!

From HERB "n" GARDENER - Westside, KCMO
Get it while it is hot...this may be Lew's last week at market!! He will have luscious greens including ARUGULA, specialty SALAD MIXES, CHARDS & KALES, and a whole lotta' love.....

From Platte Prairie Farms - Northside, KCMO
The "Squash Father" will have totally outrageous roots including RUTABEGAS, BEETS, & TURNIPS, not to mentionGREENS, Dried GRAINS & NUTS, OATMEAL, and herbs....

From Pov's Garden - An Urban Farm in KCK
http://www.HunsGarden.com
As usual Pov will blow your mind with his charming self and awesome quantities of home-grown goodies includingHEIRLOOM PUMPKINS in tangerine, periwinkle, and rustic orange, as well as FRESH GINGER ROOT, APPLES,ASIAN GREENS, and maybe (if we are lucky) TOMATOES!!!

From Western Hills Produce - Higginsville, MO
Alice will be sure to wet your whistle with her fresh baked breads (from home-grown and freshly ground wheat), as well as muffins, cup-cakes, & cookies. Canned goodies like fruit jams and jellies will also be available alongside seasonal produce and farm-fresh EGGS!!!

And last but certainly not least BREAD OF LIFE BAKERY will be there with all sorts of breads and sweet treats,Puddin' Head will be bangin' with the world's finest freshly ground organic/fair-trade coffee, and GOATSBEARD GOAT CHEESE will be aging for your pleasure in the big silver fridge!!!

So there you have it.

EAT YOUR HEART OUT KANSAS CITY this Friday @ the BADSEED!

On behalf of myself and my fellow farmers, we look forward to feeding you.

Yours Truly,

Local group challenges the community to

Eat Local
for the Holidays

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Sweet potatoes that traveled 800 miles from Georgia . Pecans that journeyed 1,700 miles from California . The ingredients for a holiday meal can really rack up the miles.

But a local group wants the community to know that many food items for your holiday meal can be found right here in Kansas City . They’re local, they’re tasty and they’re easier to find than you might think.

The Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition is encouraging Kansas Citians to Eat Local for the Holidays by asking them to pledge online to have at least one local food item as part of a holiday meal.

“We have farmers growing and raising some of the best quality food in the country right here in our region,” said Gretchen Kunkel, president of KC Healthy Kids and a member of the Food Policy Coalition. “We want people to be aware of the wonderful food resources we have in our community. Buying local is good for our economy, our environment and our health.”

According to Kunkel, foods that are picked ripe and spend less time in transit are generally more nutrient-dense, have more flavor and use fewer, if any, chemical preservatives.

People can pledge online to
Eat Local for the Holidays

by visiting
www.eatlocalkc.net
Those who take the pledge will be
entered in a drawing for local food prizes.

The Eat Local for the Holidays web site includes helpful information about what is in season in the Greater Kansas City area and where people can buy locally grown items. It also includes recipes using items that are available locally during the holidays, such as apples, herbs, pecans, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, cheese, eggs and poultry. For those who prefer to have someone else do their holiday cooking, the Web site also includes a list of area restaurants that specialize in local foods.

“The holidays are a perfect time to add another dimension to how we think about food because we are already making thoughtful food purchases,” Kunkel said. “By adding just one locally grown item to your holiday meal, you can begin to make a difference in the strength of our local food system.”

About the Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition

The Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition is a group of individuals, organizations, businesses and government representatives committed to ensuring that there is a healthy, sustainable and affordable food system for Greater Kansas City. The coalition promotes food policies that positively impact the nutritional, economic, social and environmental health of Greater Kansas City. More information is available at www.eatlocalkc.net.

LAST MARKET DAY - BROOKSIDE - The Community Farmers Market at Brookside (KCMO) - for Market Day (SATURDAY)

http://www.farmerscommunitymarket.com/images/market_logo.gif

Greetings Market Friends!

Greetings and fond farewells (at least until next year).
This is the last market of the '09 season.

This season brought some wild ups and downs to customers and vendors alike, but every Saturday we could count on friendly faces. Thank you for your support, friendship and appreciation of our local foods and farmers. We couldn't do this without you - you are the most important part of local food - the local part. You remind us that we aren't just growing vegetables or making cheese, we are being invited into your homes and to your tables every week. That honor is what keeps us planting, prepping, creating and going. There is nothing quite like thinking of a particular market customer as you harvest an item you know will delight them.

We'll keep thinking of you over the winter as we prepare for next season. We hope you will all take care and stay warm and well-fed through the cold months. We'll miss you! We'll miss market! We'll miss sharing recipes, bragging about our wares and commiserating over the weather. We'll miss the market kids, the market dogs, and the market music. We will miss all of it ... but maybe not so much next Saturday morning, as we snuggle back under the warm covers for a well deserved sleep-in. :)

But no sleeping in this Saturday... this is the grand finale! We'll be at market with plenty of fresh local food to stock up on. We hope you'll come see us and help us usher out the season in style.

THANK YOU!!!

From our vendors:

Wells Family Farms

Hi Everyone, It will be good to see you all again, I am sorry that I ran out of beef, in the freezer, not the field! But am back in business and ready to share all the goodies from our farm.
We have all cuts available, also we have sweet breads! it is actually suet, it was requested so had a couple extra made up.

We also will be bringing other goodies, wreaths, baskets full of squirrel food (acorns! yummy!) and hedge balls. Our diatomaceous earth is jarred up and ready and our teas have made a big splash. I will have Red Raspberry and Blackberry with me. Dried soy beans to make your snakes with and seeds for planting and sprouting. '
I hope to be harvesting my horse radish this week, it will be sold as whole fresh root. I was warned to grind it out side so will experiment with this!

Call or email with special orders!

Thank you,

Kim

Blue Door

Yeah! My fall crops matured in time and I will have a plethora of new crops to share! I'm glad to be able to share this last abundance with you all, so please come by and see me. I'll have:

- Persimmons!!! If you've never enjoyed a ripe, native persimmon, you simply must, must, must come by and try one. These fall treats have been described as a mix of a date, plum and tangerine... tantalized yet?
- Broccoli. Fall broccoli is super tasty, but quantities are limited.
- Baby fennel. Great raw in salads, roasted or poached with fish.
- Sorrel. This lemony green is great raw or in sorrel soup.
- Head lettuce (Romaine and Red Summer Crisp)
- Shunkyo radishes. This neon pink, daikon like radish is sweet to start, with a pleasant, slow building heat to finish. My absolute favorite radish.
- Raab. This new crop is tender and marvelous. If you've never had raab, come by and ask for recipes.
- Pac choi. Fat and juicy, white stemmed and perfect for raw snacking for stir fry.
- Chard. The yummy rainbow green.
- Turnips love this weather.
- Garlic chives.
- Kale. My loyal Winterbor kale continues to produce.

Thank you all so much for your support this season. I love growing food for you all and am excited about next season. If you have suggestions or requests, please let me know - I'm always up for new ideas!

Best wishes,

Laura

KCCUA

Late October. The last market. Time for reflection. Time to celebrate the summer’s harvest. Time to say see-ya-later to market farmers and friends. We come to the last market with gratitude for the support of the Brookside neighborhood, the area merchants, the new customers of the year and our long-time regular customers. It’s been a great year full of cooperation and growth, struggle and success, rain and more rain. Have you ever seen so much rain?

What we lost in potatoes because of the rain, we gained in peppers.
This year we’ve eaten peppers and more peppers and more peppers. Some years it’s eggplant and more eggplant and far too often it’s squash and more squash. As a farmer though, I’m thankful whenever anything grows. I always think eating something is better than eating nothing.

So, to this last market of the season, we will bring PEPPERS- sweet, bell peppers and tiny, hot peppers. TOMATOES---a few red ones for the market early-birds and lots of green ones for everyone else. Think fried green tomatoes, green tomato relish, green tomato salsa, green tomato and parsley soup? We still have EGGPLANT ripening in the field and will bring that. GREEN BEANS and EDAMAME. New crop of SCALLIONS and LEEKS. Freshly dug SWEET POTATOES---Yumyumyum! BABY SQUASH. KALE and SWISS CHARD. MICROGREENS and WATERCRESS. Our wonderful leaves of SALAD MIX and LETTUCE MIX. The most perfect SPINACH I’ve ever seen or tasted anywhere anytime. ARUGULA that will knock your wool socks off. And ROOTS---the TURNIPS are flawlessly delicious, BEETS and maybe 14 CARROTS (we’re between crops). The HERBS are doing fine in this weather. LEMONGRASS and PARSLEY, ROSEMARY and SAGE, and some others will be handily available as you check out at the stand. Oak Ridge Farm is bringing us their melt-in-your-mouth SHITAKE MUSHROOMS.

Be sure to up sign up at the stand for the farm’s winter veggie email. Weather permitting we’ll be growing all the way through the night of winter bringing fresh, organic and local produce to you and yours. Our high tunnels will be full of greenness if you want to stop by the farm and check them out.

We thank each and every one of you for your continued support through this year. We would not be the farm we are without you. We would not be able to do the things we do without you all doing what you do.

Thank you. We’ll see you Saturday.

Green Dirt Farm

Our last market day for the season. We will have all of our Fresh cheese and almost all of our aged cheeses including Prairie Tomme (sorry no Queen of the Prairie- she is sold out until next year.) We will also have a good selection of lamb cuts including sausage. Hope to see you there!
But if you can't make it on Saturday please come and see us on Friday evenings at the Bad Seed Farmers' Market (19th and McGee.) We expect to be at this indoor farmers' market through January.
