UPDATE from BROOKSIDE - Farmers' Community Market at Brookside...
We will miss our beloved Laura this Saturday because of refrigerator malfunctions at Blue Door Farm. We hope she enjoys her much-needed time off. We love you, Laura!
Also, here is some great info from our new vendor Nutressant:
WOW.....we are so happy to be in the midst of so many knowledgable people who understand not only the affects of chemicals on our food supply but also on the products we put on our skin. It's always interesting to see what products attracts the most attention, but at this market, it's pretty much the same across our table. Except for the soap, as most people have already found a favorite, there are a lot of bathrooms full of organic products that don't work (deodorant) or just plain taste bad (toothpaste) as many people are telling us.
This week John will have some smaller deodorant sticks for those who are reluctant to spend a lot of money on ONE MORE!
Also, as this is a new product line, we have smaller quantities of most everything.........."let's try it first". i.e. shampoo, toothpaste, soap sticks, deodorant, body butter (both tubes and 4 oz jars)
And how very much I appreciate everyone who comes out on these really hot Saturdays.......thank you!

Farmers' Community Market at Brookside ~ SATURDAYS ~ 8am-1pm
Here are a few treats to look for this Saturday at market!
From Blue Door Farm:
Hello, hello market-folk. I must strongly suggest something to all of you: Go outside!
The sky is blue, the temps are perfect, the grass is green and it's all waiting for you to enjoy. So take a moment to slip outside for lunch, a walk or maybe even a jaunt to the park. Your mood will lift, I promise!
I'll be outside (of course) harvesting these tasty veggies for you this week:
- Japanese eggplant. These babies are growing like crazy right now. They are tender, mild and have few seeds. If you've hesitated to try cooking with eggplant, these are a great introduction. I'll bring some yummy recipes.
- Carmen sweet italian peppers. I think I've raved about these enough, but just in case: sweet, rich, delicious.
- Tomatoes. I’ll also have okra and kale. Need I say more?
And that is it, for this week at least. I've been busy planting fall crops to tempt you with later in the year, but for now we must cherish the summer crops!
Now go outside! :)
See you Saturday,
Laura

Bread of Life
Bear Creek Farms
Glorious, glorious fall weather - 50 degrees this morning. (Yesterday we finally got the air conditioner fixed after a long hot summer - typical!) All week we've noticed the sounds and signs of autumn - the crows calling, monarch crysalises hanging everywhere, crickets in every closet, walking sticks appearing on the screens, the school bus going by, sweatshirts hanging on fence posts as the day warms up - yep, its fall - and we are sure giving thanks!
So at market we'll have cabbage, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, okra, the first of the winter squash, some cantalope (if the coons don't find them first), basil, and everything else we might find.
Hope everyone else is enjoying this cooler weather as much as we! See you Saturday -
Jeanna and Lonnie
Robbins and Jim

Thanks to everyone who came out last week! The weather looks to be beautiful again, so we’ll be looking for you again…and will bring
Lots more butternut squash, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, not quite 800 pounds of potatoes in many sizes and colors, sweet potato greens, the last of this year’s garlic. Come early for the tomatoes. And as things look now, we’ll have green beans and edamame. Sweet peppers and beautiful hot peppers. Dancer eggplant and her friends. Tomatillos. Basil. Summer squash. We’ll also bring leeks, mini onions, beets, carrots, microgreens, Malabar spinach, arugula, purslane and other herbs ready for now or for drying.
See you Saturday!
And remember to…

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - A MUST ON FRIDAYS IN THE CROSSROADS
This is Farmer Brooke and I am here to tantalize your taste buds with the sensational seasonal flavors of homegrown foods. Stuff your face this Friday at the BADSEED Farmers Market from 4-9 PM with a mouth watering array of "earthly delights" including sexy vegetables, organic fruits, free-range meats, eggs, artisan goat cheese, wholesome baked goods, liquid elixirs, and sooooo much more. Damn! I am making myself drool for crying out loud. (that is what I get for typing the weekly e-mail on an empty belly)
Mini Farm Up-Date:
As most of you know, Dan and I are preparing to dismantle BADSEED Farm after this growing season and move onto our new 13 acre site on the east side of town. We have loads of work to do as our new land is completely RAW!! We are creating an off-grid farmstead that will include an organic orchard, vineyard, vegetable garden, and an array of heritage animals. WE ARE HOSTING CROP MOB WORK PARTIES just about every Saturday. If you would like to come out and play in the dirt with us please respond to this e-mail and I will add you to our "volunteer e-mail list". On a regular basis you will be notified with dates, times, and directions.
We have an overwhelming amount of jobs to be done before the ice gets thick. Currently we are laying straw mulch for our 2 acre "no-till" vegetable production, spreading tons of agricultural lime and manure, building and repairing fence lines, putting in a gravel driveway and parking lot, designing an underground cistern for rain water storage, digging a pond, preparing to plant apple and pear trees in early November, and (last but not least) tearing down an antique barn and re-building it on our land. Can you say YIKES!!!! I can.
Those are just the initial steps that must begin to take shape before next season's spring planting. The larger picture (as far as infrastructure goes) includes a solar-passive greenhouse and personal dwelling. But first things first. I mean c'mon!!.....we don't even have water on the site right now! In our attempt to stay off-grid, we will not be tapping into City water. We had planned to drill a well, but that will not be possible due to certain geographical reasons. Our only other option is to implement a large-scale rain water catchment system. In order to catch a whole lot of rain, you need a great big roof line. Therefore, the barn needs to get up ASAP. We could never afford to buy new lumber, so we bought an old barn for $1500 and will soon be tearing it down. Check out the picture!! It is pretty wild. I don't even want to think about how much work it will be to get that bad boy re-built, and furthermore, we don't have a freakin' clue as to what we are doing!! JUST BREATHE DEEP AND SMILE........right?? What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. (cliches are my only hope)
Strange Brew: Kombucha “mushroom” Tea
*Tuesday, August 31, 7-8:30 pm at the BADSEED Market, 1909 McGee, KCMO, 64108
The Chinese called it the “Immortal Health Elixir” because they believed Kombucha balanced the Middle Qi (Spleen and Stomach) and aided in digestion, allowing the body to focus on healing.
Join BADSEED Farmer, Brooke Salvaggio, in a relaxing evening sipping “brew” and learning the art and magic of making Kombucha tea.
Students will take home their very own Kombucha culture and written instructions for care and brewing techniques.
*If taken good care of, your Kombucha “mushroom” will accompany you on life’s many journeys and spawn “kombucha babies” to give to your friends!!
Cost of Class: $25
