Market Finale
Last Chance for Locally Grown Food
Wednesday, October 12th

4:30-7:30 pm

Occupy the Farmers' Market

There is no better way to protest the greedy grip of a few oligarchs over our livelihood, than to come on down to your local market for food grown without pesticides, destructive fertilizers or genetic modification.  When you support our farmers and artisans, you are declaring your freedom to live well for a better world.   This will be the last offical day at the Westport Plaza Market for the 2011 growing season.  Your purchases will provide the fuel to produce more sustainable food next season.  Plus, we'd all love to see you one more time before the long wait until springtime!

A ton of good food will be working its way from the fields, including tomatoes, a wealth of greens, root veggies, potatoes, herbs, squash, beans, eggs, fresh baked goods, jams, and the return of grass fed beef!

Stock up for the cold season!!!

This Wednesday, October 12th from 4:30 until 7:30 pm
at the intersection of Westport Road and Wyoming Street in KC, MO.

Sustainability Aspects of Niles Garden

At Niles Home for Children

Organic - Niles garden, while not certified organic we try to follow the requirements for an organic garden. Organic means that we use remedies for controlling pests that are much less harmful to the environment and less harmful to the people who eat our produce. We use substances like Bacillus thuragensis which is a bacteria that eats worms that eat plants or diatomatious earth, the silica shells of ancient diatoms whose razor sharp edges slice into the insects bodies and dry them out.

No-Till Beds - It is said that a third of the world’s carbon could reside in the soil. The soil is a huge carbon sink that could hold the carbon from much of the carbon dioxide that is currently in the atmosphere causing global warming. Bynottilling we prevent the soil bacteria from eating carbon rich substances like glomalin and releasing CO2. We also add glomalin producing micorizzal fungi to the roots of plants that form associations with these fungi.

Honoring the Real Gardeners - In a handful of soil there are more organisms that there are people on earth. Through the interaction of these billions of “workers” soil is created and made healthy for plants. We must study the ecology of the soil in order to maximize the efforts of these tiny helpers. It behooves us to understand soil ecology and build and maintain healthy soil.

Nature Areas - We have a large understory area where native plants are being reintroduced so our residents, staff and visitors can see natural ecosystems in action. We also have a prairie plant area that attracts butterflies and beneficial insects including pollinators that help our garden plants reproduce.

Solar Waterfall - Although our pond is not a natural feature the attractive waterfall is powered by a solar panel atop our outdoor classroom gazebo. The panel demonstrates that power can be generated from sunlight, avoiding the use of fossil
fuels.

Watering system - Our watering system minimizes the use of water for growing food. We use a thick straw mulch that holds the moisture in the soil while creating a rich environment for our soil organisms to operate. We also use drip tape that lets water seep out under the mulch where it won’t evaporate into the air.

Food in a Food Desert - Niles Home for Children is located in what has been called a food desert. In order to find fresh and nutritious food on sale, nearby residents must travel at least two miles. You can get liquor five blocks away. A high percentage of our neighbors must rely on public transportation so it is just not practical to shop where good food is available. To that end we have been offering a Tuesday afternoon market from 4 to 7 PM on our lawn at 1911 E 23rd Street.

We Demonstrate and Teach Sustainable Skills and Values -
Our residents, staff, volunteers and visitors get to see a working garden that produces food for the community passing on skills and knowledge that makes us all more secure. Niles Home for Children, through our garden, offers volunteer opportunities, tours, workshops and internships to people in the larger community as well as to our youthful residents.

See videos of our garden at
Please let others know about us.

NILES HOME FOR CHILDREN – CES II newsletter

Niles Home for Children is a licensed, accredited day and residential treatment facility located in the urban core of Kansas City, MO. Its 127-year history of caring for troubled and at-risk children began in 1833 when an African-American bricklayer named Samuel Eason opened his heart and his home to orphaned neighborhood children. Over the years, Niles has evolved from an informal orphanage to a formal treatment program for children and youth suffering from mental and emotional illness, but the concept of “Home” is still central to what we do. Today, Niles serves about 150 youth annually, in three programs:

· Safe, intensive Residential Treatment for children in severe crisis;

· Day Treatment/Alternative Education for children whose disruptive behavior keeps them from succeeding in conventional classrooms;

· Substance Abuse prevention or treatment, depending on previous use.

The children in Residential Treatment, ages 7-17, suffer from acute depression, bi-polar disorder, PTSD and other mental and emotional illnesses. Most often, they have been profoundly traumatized by abuse, neglect or abandonment, and many of them have been removed from their homes by the State for their own safety.WithNiles’ multi-layered therapy and low staff-to-resident ratio, they can usually be released to a less restrictive environment in 3-12 months.

The Day Treatment children attend Niles Prep Behavior Management School in grades K-12. Typically, these youth are referred to Niles by public and charter schools because of their very disruptive behavior. Upon arrival, they are typically performing 2+ years below grade level, so academic remediation and integrated therapy in a supportive environment are both essential to success.

All these high-risk children are tested for substance use when they arrive and are assigned to either the prevention or the treatment program. All of Niles’ skilled and caring professionals work together to achieve the agency’s mission “to meet the mental health and educational needs of high-risk children and their families, empowering them to become confident and contributing citizens.”

But - amazingly - we still have produce. So this week we'll have greens - lots of chard, mustard, and kale. And there will be piles of pumpkins (pie pumpkins - wonderful for cooking or Halloween decorations), butternuts and other yummy squashes, eggplant, sweet potatoes, radishes, turnips, zucchini, cucumbers and more. And, just for fun - maybe some peanuts!

So come on out -relish this fall weather, stock up for winter, and just enjoy!

20111007 - Funky First Friday Farmers' Market ~ BADSEED - Kansas City, Mo - EVERY FRIDAY 4pm-9pm

Fellow-Foodies & Grumbling Bellies -

Man!  I hate writing this "market e-mail" when I am hungry.  I can't think straight.  My mind gets lost in mouthwatering fantasies of butternut squash gnocchi doused in brown butter sage sauce or pumpkin ravioli swimming in olive oil, caramelized onions, and an inappropriate amount of Parmigiano Reggiano.  It's torture.  More so because I have a 4 month old baby and the likelihood of me actually cooking a meal (let alone something complicated like my before mentioned fantasy) is incredibly slim.  Even though I have just harvested hundreds of pounds of winter squash and pumpkins alike, I will NEVER experience their sheer ecstasy.  What a shame.  Instead I will sit here starving & sleep-deprived - staring at the computer screen as my eyes roll back into my head.  Motherhood.....what a trip!!  No, but in all seriousness, if you saw Percy (my son) you'd be willing to give up sleep and food as well.  BUT, since you don't have a "Percy" in your life - it's time to get busy in the kitchen!!  Fall is here my friends, and it is SO DAMN TASTY.   The local harvest really shines this time of year with the most decadent delights the dirt has to offer.  Get your "fall fix" this Friday at the BADSEED Farmers' Market from 4-9 pm.  Your gregarious gang of far-out farmers will be waiting for you with awesome autumn offerings including creamy winter squash, pie pumpkins, leeks, garlic, mean greens, bodacious beets, and tasty turnips.  These ever-sexy veggies will be accompanied by free-range meats, artisan cheese, micro-roasted coffee, and more.  Dance the night away while you shop - our righteous house-band, Checkered Past, will be performing from 6-9 pm.  BYOB and BYOS (buy your own squash)!!!!

Sexy Veggie of the Week

This week's Runner-Up is Giant Japanese Red Mustard Greens!  These insanely gorgeous, reddish-purple, green-veined leaves add an incredible "bite" to any dish.  They have a mustard flavor with a wasabi twist!!  Eaten raw, they light your mouth up with "fiery goodness".  Chop em small, and mix em' in asian-themed salads...(the dressing will dull the bite).  If they are too spicy raw, throw em' in any saute or stir-fry.  Once cooked, they become much milder adding a really nice flavor and complexity to a simple meal.  Check out this very simply recipe for Sauteed Mustard Greens, or for those of you who would like to take it to the next level, check out this recipe for Red Beet Risotto with Mustard Greens & Goat Cheese.  FYI - they also make a wicked (spicy) pesto!!

This week's Grand-Prize-Winner is the buxom and buttery Butternut Squash.  I couldn't help but celebrate this "classic", most popular winter squash.  I grow a lot of "weird" varieties and although they are funky, fun, and delicious, nothing tops a good butternut squash.  Butternuts have that ever-creamy texture and nutty-sweet flavor that makes EVERYONE happy.  Unlike an acorn squash and many pumpkins, butternuts have stringless flesh.  It is deep orange and delightfully rich, especially when fruits are at their ripest.  Versatile as any winter squash, butternuts can be roasted, toasted, and also pureed for soups and pies.  In addition to that, they can be mashed for fillings, breads, and muffins.  One of my favorite (more complicated) preparations is Butternut Squash Gnocchi.  Their are many variations on this recipe (and I tend to improvise), but check out this one for starters - http://www.hungrycravings.com/2009/11/butternut-squash-gnocchi.html.  If this more basic approach to gnocchi does not satisfy you, try adding ricotta cheese to your dough.  It is heavenly....

Pictures are attached.  You know the drill - print them out, blow them up, and plaster them all over the men's room!!
