Hi everyone! It was not to bad out today, I do have faith it will be warm again! Tomorrow we (Wells Family Farms and Alice and Marvin) with our great grass fed beef and Alice as usual will have lots of home baked goodies.

Remember, with the products Alice and Marvin bring, they grow the grain, they do the harvest and grinding and then she does the baking! You can't get more home made than that!

Our beef is also raised by us, so you can come and visit the farm if you ever have the time or want!

For market this Saturday at 39th and Genessee, in the parking lot of the Twisted Sister Gift Shop, we will be set up from 11 am to 1 pm. Alice and Marvin usually only stay until 12 noon, so come early for their goodies.

An Attempt at Democracy or Manifest Destiny?

Wes Jackson: Lincoln and the Homestead Act

On the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birthday, the Library welcomes Dr. Wes Jackson for a discussion titled Lincoln and the Homestead Act: An Attempt at Democracy or Manifest Destiny? on Thursday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

Jackson will discuss the intended purpose of the Homestead Act, what worked, what didn’t, and how and why homesteading ultimately ended.

Jackson is president of The Land Insitute, based in Salina, Kansas. His writings include papers and books. His most recent work – The Virtues of Ignorance: Complexity, Sustainability, and the Limits of Knowledge – was co-edited with William Vitek and released by the University of Kentucky Press in 2008. Jackson received his bachelor’s degree from Kansas Wesleyan, his master’s from the University of Kansas and his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. In the November 2005 issue, Smithsonian named Jackson one of “35 Who Made a Difference.”

Healthy Food Policy Forum - American Royal Center - KCMO - THURSDAY 9am-3:30pm

2009 Healthy Food Policy Forum
sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City and KC Healthy Kids
Description: The food system plays a central role in the health of our citizens. It dictates access, quality, affordability and the nutritional value of the food we consume. The state of our health is inextricably related to the quality of our food system.

Unfortunately, healthy, nutritious, accessible and affordable food eludes many people, which, in turn, undermines health. Gaps include hunger and food insecurity, lack of fair prices for farmers, lack of fresh local food in schools and institutional settings, lack of full service grocery stores in low income communities, lack of knowledge on what food is nutritious, and lack of knowledge on how to prepare nutritious meals. Positive changes in public policy and awareness will offer Kansas City and the surrounding region its best chance to improve our local food system.

The goals of the February 2009 Healthy Food Policy Forum are the following:
  • To educate participants on the connection between health, the food system and pressure points in federal farm policy;
  • To communicate how food policy and food marketing impact kids health;
  • To showcase the Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition (FPC) and its strategic plan; and
  • To increase understanding of healthy food issues for vulnerable populations, especially children.

RED SCARE: China and the New Global Food System - TONIGHT at the Plaza Branch - Truman Forum KCMO

Marion Nestle: Red Scare

Date and time of event: 02/11/2009 - 6:30pm
Location: Plaza Branch
Recommended reading:
The Food We Eat

The Kansas City Public Library hosts food policy expert Marion Nestle for a presentation called Red Scare: China and the New Global Food System on Wednesday, February 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Truman Forum at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

This illustrated presentation details the far-reaching effects of the new global food system and uncovers unexpected connections between food supplies for pets, farm animals, and humans. As detailed in her new book Pet Food Politics: The Chihuahua in the Coal Mine, Nestle traces tainted pet food ingredients back to their source in China, precipitating the largest recall of consumer products in U.S. history in 2007. What began as a problem “merely” for cats and dogs soon became an issue of tremendous concern to everyone.

Nestle is a professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University. A former policy adviser in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, her current research focuses on the scientific, economic, and social influences on food choice.

The event is co-sponsored by KC Healthy Kids, a charitable foundation focused on promoting fit and healthy kids in Greater Kansas City. Pet Food Politics will be available for sale, and the author will sign copies purchased during the event.

Admission is free. Click here or call 816.701.3407 to RSVP. Free parking is also available.

We want to Thank You for signing the original letter at Food Democracy Now! In just three weeks, more than 60,000 Americans have joined Michael Pollan, Wendell Berry, Wes Jackson, Alice Waters, Marion Nestle, Frances Moore Lappé, and Eric Schlosser calling for a sustainable USDA.

Now that the Secretary of Agriculture has been selected, it's more important than ever that we send our message to Washington. Today's farmers need a serious voice for sustainable change at the USDA.

Therefore, Food Democracy Now! has created a list of 12 candidates for the crucial Under Secretary positions that will stand up for family farms, safe food, clear air and water, animal welfare and soil preservation.

We need your help to continue to spread the word to your friends and colleagues to reach our goal of 100,000 signatures in the next two weeks before the Inauguration!

These 12 candidates have spent their lives fighting for family farmers and we're calling them the Sustainable Dozen. Help us send them to Washington.

If you've already signed the petition, please forward this to one other person who cares about these issues to help us reach our goal of 100,000 Americans for a sustainable food system for the 21st century.

Once the Secretary of Agriculture is confirmed, we will deliver this letter with your comments to him and President Obama in Washington DC.

We at Food Democracy Now! are continuing to give voice to these concerns with policy makers at the federal, state and local levels, to gain a seat at the table and keep these issues at the forefront of future policy decisions.

Currently we are MORE THAN 60,000 voices strong. Please help keep this conversation going...Donate today. By donating as little as $5 or $10 you can make a difference in shaping the conversation at the USDA. Through our collective efforts, this letter has successfully reached "the right people" in Washington and we need to continue this vital work to create a future that we can ALL BELIEVE IN.

From all of us at Food Democracy Now! — Have a Happy, Sustainable New Year!

Best,
David Murphy

Growing Growers Apprenticeship Program - 2009

The 2009 Growing Growers Apprenticeship Program
is now accepting

applications.

The deadline is March 1st, but earlier application is strongly
recommended.

The apprenticeship program offers a doorway into sustainable growing by giving participants experience with day to day operations (work!) on area farms, plus access to workshops, farm tours and one-on-one training from their host farmer.

Apprenticeships can be paid or volunteer, and host farms are located on both sides of the state line, in many different locals. Our twenty-two host farms reflect the diversity of sustainable, local ag: from a sheep dairy, to an urban, organic vegetable farm, to a grower of native and heirloom fruit, to rural farms complete with barn, cornfields and cattle.

Apprentices too are diverse: from high school students to retirees, our past apprentices have successfully worked and learned - whether they had a background in farming or not.

There are thousands of books about sustainable agriculture, but nothing prepares you for farming like working on a farm. Both hard work and learning are unavoidable.

So if you, or anyone you know is considering becoming a farmer/grower, please send them to:

www.GrowingGrowers.org

or have them email: growers (@) ksu.edu

or call: (816) 805-0362

We have an informational flyer that you are welcome to print and post anywhere you think it might be seen by possible apprentices.

Also, if there are any farms out there that would like to participate as host farms, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Laura Christensen
