BROOKSIDE - The Community Farmers Market at Brookside (KCMO) - for Market Day (SATURDAYS)

Greetings Market Friends,

Thanks to everyone who joined us for a busy Tomato Festival last week! The summer bounty continues - we look forward to sharing it with you again this Saturday.

From our vendors:

From Green Dirt Farm
The cool weather has been more than we could have hoped for! The grass is lush
and the girls are in seventh heaven. The ewes milk production drops off steadily
as the days shorten, so we are expecting a slowly decreasing milk supply for our
cheese making. Even so, we will have a small but regular supply of cheese all the
way through December. And with our new Tommes, which can age up to a year, we
should have cheese enough to carry us through to the next milking season. Our
cheeses this week include, Dirt Lover, Bossa and all of the flavors of our Fresh.
We will have lamb at the market this week (but sorry, no sausage or racks.)
Don't forget to make a reservation for our next cheese tasting event on August
15. We will be comparing artisan cheeses made from cow, goat and sheep milks and
discussing the differences.
Hope you can make it out to visit with us!
Sarah
From Bread of Life
Hello market friends,
We have had a quieter house this week with Bryce and Lili having to go back to California where it is "boring". Bryce and Lili are ready to move to Brookside and visit the farm and bakery often.
We will have Lili and Bryce's Honey Bee cookies and Vegan Pumpkin Muffins still to help fund Chris and Bethanys' wedding in March. Good thing they came up with some good recipes. The Honey Bee Cookies are my new favorite and we Ambrose Farm Honey to make them. Try these with a cup of coffee for a treat.
Our Burritos this week will have some of Josiahs first potatoes out of the his garden and are they beautiful. Our whole grain breads, cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls, black olive bread and Italian herb bread will be some of what Luke will have at market this week.
Have a great weekend and hope to see many of you on Saturday,
Luke, Chris and Kathy
From Wells Family Farms
Sharon and I (Kim) are getting ready to pick berries! The gooseberries are
really thinck on the plants. The blackberries are beautiful, but those
crafty birds are quick. I have been keeping a sharp eye on the patch, but
darned if they don't beat me to this spot every time. Hopefully in the
timber of the Rock Quarry there will be more.
I won't have any ground until around the 8th of august. I do have some
great cuts of steaks, kabob meat, stew meat, and some beautiful roast. Bug
repellant, that truly does work and smells great, Diatomaceous Earth,
Soybeans, dried, red clover/burdock seeds for sprouting, and the horse
leavins to make all your plants grow great. Hope to see you at the market.
Kim
From the Kansas City Community Farm
Nature has been kind these past two weeks. The weather's made it very pleasant to work in the field. This time of year, Alicia and her crew are spending most of their time harvesting. Gone are the days when we harvested only on the day or two before market. Now we're harvesting some crops every day (like okra) and some three times a week (like summer squash and cucumbers). Our tomatoes and wonderful filet beans and tri-color beans require twice-weekly harvesting. And do they take time to pick... The weather helps; it's really exhausting picking beans when temperatures are in the upper 90s or warmer. Then, with sweat pouring down your neck, it's best not to look left or right (avoid the sight of the long rows of beans that lie ahead) but to keep the eyes focused on the plants right in front of you. Doing so for hours makes for an interesting mental exercise, I think, but so far we've not had that kind of weather. :)
So this Saturday we'll be bringing you the loveliest vegetables this farm has to offer, harvested in balmy weather with much gratitude. You'll find the best-tasting, juiciest, spiciest, most colorful TOMATOES on our tables. A real bonanza, including heirlooms, hybrids, cherries, salad tomatoes and roma tomatoes. This is the season for tomatoes, so enjoy. Also, expect the summery quartet of SUMMER SQUASH, CUCUMBERS, EGGPLANT and BELL PEPPERS as well as lovely FILET and TRI-COLOR BEANS. We'll bring a variety of POTATOES including FINGERLINGS and an assortment of root vegetables like BEETS, CARROTS, perhaps even a few TURNIPS. From the alliums family we'll have GARLIC, ONIONS, CHIPOLINNIS, SCALLIONS and LEEKS. Also, OKRA, FENNEL, and BUNCHED KALE and CHARD (cross you fingers). Last time I looked the EDAMAME weren't ready but you never know what happens between now and Saturday. Finally, this week come to get more organic SHIITAKE mushrooms courtesy of Oak Ridge Farm in Lawrence.
It'll be a pleasure seeing you all. Thanks so much for your support.
Daniel
From Blue Door Farm
I’ll be there folks, with plenty of my mixed salad tomatoes and big, red slicers too. The peppers are here too: sweet, red italian fryers, dark green anchos, spicy jalapenos, fruity/spicy Mariachis and tasty green and white bell peppers.
I’ll have more garlic, potatoes, onions plus some bunches of that marvelous italian broccoli and, of course, tasty zucchini, yellow squash and “flying saucers” (pattypan squash).
See you soon!

Troostwood Youth Garden Market - FRIDAYS & SATURDAYS - 52nd & Paseo

Troostwood You

Youth gardeners have the opportunity to explore urban agriculture in Kansas City, MO at the Troostwood Garden in Kansas City. Located on a corner lot donated for use by Rockhurst University, Troostwood Gardens is in an urban neighborhood.

There, a master gardener, and ten youth work with Ericka Wright’s “Urban Agriculture Youth Program,” building their urban agriculture skills. They grow produce to sell at the Troostwood Youth Garden Market.Through the help of a 2005 grant from the NCR-SARE Farmer Rancher Grant Program, the Urban Agriculture Youth Program at Troostwood Garden’s hopes to in uence a change in youths’ lifestyle and at the same time improve their nutrition, environment, social and economic practices. Ericka Wright’s family started Troostwood Gardens on their property in 2000 as an activity for neighborhood youth.

“In the community I live in, we were the only house in the neighborhood with a swing set, so we had always kids in the yard. Many of the kids had low scores in reading and math,” explained Wright. “Most people enjoy eating, whatever level they’re at, and we  gured we could read a little, eat a little, do a little math, and learn together in the garden with the kids.”

At 41 years-old, Wright is disabled from muscular dystrophy, and values a healthful diet. Wright wanted to show children healthful nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle. “In terms of sustainable agriculture, our project falls in line with community. It brings people together in an outdoor classroom, and makes people aware of sustainable gardening practices in the inner city, saving seeds, and eating healthfully,” said Wright.

Youth begin gardening each March and continue working in the garden and at the Troostwood Youth Garden Market until the last vegetables are harvested, typically in late October. “We’ve found that the youth developed better self esteem. They saw the fruits of their labor and how their hard work had paid off…They now have knowledge of a garden, what it takes to have and build one, and team work.”

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - Fabulous Food Found Flourishing Frequently IN THE CROSSROADS 4:30-9:00pm

Dearest Connoisseurs of Local fresh Flavor -

Summer is an absolutely DECADENT time for home chefs and "eaters" of the garden's bounty.

As a farmer and culinary disciple, I am in heaven!! The harsh labors of Spring planting have definitely paid off, and now it is HARVEST HARVEST HARVEST!!!! My days are filled with gathering the bulbous bodies of summer's fruits including orgasmic eggplants, french scallop squash, crisp and juicy cucumbers, dragon's tongue beans, and mouthwatering heirloom tomatoes in every shape/size/color imaginable!! The field is simply a visual and flavor-filled fantasia.

My nights are even better, when I get to retire those weary bones to the kitchen and prepare "the fruits of my labor" for the man that I love. (Nothing like growing food with you honey)

This particular time of the season really compliments my rustic Sicilian cooking style, and Dan and I have been eating the most absurdly delicious dishes as a result. Here are a few to get your tummy rumbling -

.......whole roasted garlic bulbs drenched in tarragon infused oils
.......sicilian caponata (an eggplant stew) with caramelized shallots and Missouri cinnamon soaked Pecans
.......heirloom tomato stacks with Purple Ruffles Basil & Goatsbeard Blue Cheese, drizzled with a balsamic reduction
.......stuffed zucchini boats with bread crumbs, goat cheese and garden herbs baked to perfection
.......crusty pizzas with thick slices of grilled eggplant and squash complimented by a slow cooked heirloom tomato sauce with fennel

Hungry yet???

Good.

Come see your favorite gang of renegade urban growers this Friday at the funkiest Farmers Market in town and get your hands on the freshest organically grown goodies around.

I have a head full of recipes, and I am always willing to share the secrets of eating local and in season.

See you Friday @ the BADSEED from 4:30- 9 PM!!

Yours Truly,

Farmer Brooke

BROOKSIDE - The Community Farmers Market at Brookside (KCMO) - for Market Day (SATURDAYS)

Greetings Market Friends,

It’s here! It’s here! It is finally time for the Annual Tomato Festival. We have a line-up of great things in store for you this Saturday. Jasper Mirabile from Jasper’s Marco Polo Restaurant will be on hand from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. teaching us some tomato recipes you can use to wow your next dinner guests. The recipes will feature heirloom tomatoes right from our vendors. Last year’s recipes were so amazing, that I made each and every one before the summer was over. Be sure to come out early and try out this year’s installment.

But wait—there’s more! Shindig will provide some tunes for your musical enjoyment. Also, we will have a return visit from our friends at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art who will be handing out information about the museum. And, in case you want to keep some of your tomato treasures around for the winter months, Kelly Gilbert, Master Food Volunteer with Missouri Extension, will be answering questions and sharing information about water bath canning and salsa canning.

As always we look forward to seeing you every Saturday from April through October from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the heart of Brookside at the corner of 63rd and Wornall. Also, check us out at www.farmerscommunitymarket.com.

See you Saturday!
Franki

Now from our vendors:
From Blue Door Farm:
Yes indeed... tomatoes. Did I even need to say that? I'll have heirloom and hybrid, slicers and plenty of the mixed salad tomato pints - the green and black zebra tomatoes are really producing this week so the pints look great.

My zucchini has also (finally) really kicked in, so I'll be bringing plenty of bright green zukes - perfect for grilling, raw eating, sauteeing, roasting and more. Same goes for yellow squash.

Believe it or not, the italian broccoli is still gamely producing. I love that stuff. No huge quantities, but I'll have some bunches for the early birds. Also a basket of Carmen sweet peppers, purple and yellow potatoes, onions, garlic and tasty carrots.

See you Saturday!

From Ambrose Bee Farm
:
We are a small apiary with a limited supply of local raw clover honey. The bees are raised by natural methods only, so we do not add any foreign substances to the beehives. All honey is pure and from our hives in Kansas City and Independence. Warming of honey (for packaging) is done below 105 degrees F. (If you are interested in unheated honey (solid) please contact us).

From the KC Center for Urban Agriculture
:
This time of year, we are all about tomatoes! Tomato salad with basil, freshly made croutons, and mozzarella. Bacon, basil, and tomato sandwiches. Pasta with sautéed tomatoes, garlic, and a nice grating of hard cheese. Gazpacho. Roasted okra, onion, and cherry tomatoes. Julienned cucumbers and crushed cherry tomatoes, with lemon juice, hot peppers, a dab of sugar, and salt. The biggest, heaviest, glossiest tomatoes held in one hand, salt shaker in the other, eaten like an apple. Eggs scrambled with chopped tomatoes and blue cheese. The ways to use this lovely fruit are pretty much endless!

There is something about the Midwest soils and climate that make our tomatoes really special- we've had so many customers come from other parts of the country and rave about how good our KS and MO tomatoes taste. And this year, I think they are exceptionally good. The Tomato Festival this weekend is a chance to celebrate and enjoy!

We don't mean to slight the other vegetables though by any means! We've got newly dug potatoes, their flavor and texture make grocery store tomatoes seem bland by comparison... Summer squash- babies, zucchinis, yellow
squash, patty pans- are wonderful grated or julienned and salted, then eaten raw, and you can't go wrong with steaming them or sautéing them with a bit of butter. Onions, beans, the best garlic we've ever grown at KCCUA before, cucumbers, eggplant, sweet yellow, green, and purple peppers. Hot peppers, tomatillos, just about everything is growing now- what a great week this will be for good eating.

See you at the market!

From Bread of Life Bakery:

Hello Brookside Market,

What a lovely week at the Bakery with such unseasonably nice weather. Lili and Bryce helped on Monday and will have their specials this week also. Lili will make more of her outstanding vegan pumpkin/applesauce muffins and Bryce will also have his delicious Honey Bee cookies for the day.

We will be offering our Burritos, both sausage egg and Potato egg burritos along with our spinach and smoked gouda quiches. Puddin’ head coffee with a yummy cinnamon roll also makes for a sweet treat breakfast. Our freshly baked whole grain breads, granolas, cookies, rolls, wraps, Asiago Spinach Bread and other specialty breads.

Come by and say congratulations to Chris since he became engaged to Bethany last Saturday at City Market. Luke will be more than happy to tell you about how he helped Chris to surprise his sister.

See you Saturday,
Luke, Chris and Kathy

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - A MUST ON FRIDAYS IN THE CROSSROADS + Fringe Fest continues...

Beloved Believers in a Tastier World,

We're trying hard to keep the faith! Brooke and I recently went to see the movie Food, Inc.. Despite being very tuned in with our food system, we were appalled what industry and government have driven us to eat. And yet, in the interest of your health and safety, our city has saved the day to ensure that local organic eggs and cheese are as safe as the individually wrapped American cheese slices in a supermarket near you.

That's right! The city came last week and told us that we could not legally sell the pre-packaged eggs and cheese we had stored at safe temperatures in a clean fridge. What we lack are a piece of paper and its associated fees. We can only plead ignorance, as we already had another piece of paper for the same purpose from the state. So we are attempting to obtain the appropriate permit before this Friday's market so that all of our lovely customers can know that they are safe. That said, we may or may not be able to sell the eggs and cheese you have liked so well at this week's market.

No eggs, no cheese, what's a person to do but eat succulent heirloom tomatoes, orgasmic eggplant, and arousingly aromatic basil! Regardless of whether we are able to sell eggs and cheese this week, we will continue to have an incredible array of flavorful summer vegetables from our fantastic four urban-organic growers. Please peruse the varied delights we'll have at this week's market!

Dan and Brooke
BADSEED Farm
South Side, KCMO

Eat this! Brooke and I sacrificed ourselves to poison ivy this week to gather our first POTATOES (long story). Yukon Gold. We immediately fried up the few that we forked while digging, and damn were they good!!

More TOMATOES! We can hardly keep up with their ripening. We have wonderful varieties like Japanese Black Trifle, Beefsteak, Brandywine, Mortgage Lifter, Green Zebra, Anna Russian, Cherokee Purple, Speckled Roman, Tigerella, Thai Pink Egg, Ivory Egg (those kinda eggs are legal), and many more. And don't forget our fantastic and flavorful cherry tomatoes!!

Additionally, we are harvesting melt-in-your-mouth, absolutely amazing heirloom EGGPLANT!! Eight ball Zucchini have rekindled my love for summer squash, but there are many more varieties where those came from! Our KALE is prolific, and we would like you to eat it. Freshly pulled ONIONS offer a whole new meaning to flavor.

Do you want BIG BUNCHES of FLAVORFUL FRESH HERBS at LOW PRICES?! Quit buying at outrageous grocery store prices and get thyme, oregano, parsley, BASIL and savory from BADSEED Farm.

More produce this week: beets, swiss chard, garlic, cucumbers, and edible flowers. I'm probably leaving something out, so come see for yourself!!
