LAWRENCE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN ¤ N.E. SECTOR PLAN
Wednesday, 1 June 2011, 6:30pm  -  RESCHEDULED from 11 May
Douglas County Commission
1100 Massachusetts St., Lawrence KS 66044
This sector plan grew out of the fight to save prime agricultural soils north of the Kansas River that are threatened by urban development.  Officials have now acknowledged the importance of Capability I & II Soils, but have been adverse to specific code language to protect them.  Concerns that still remain in this sector plan are:  stronger plan elements to preserve Capability I & II Soils, Stormwater flooding of North Lawrence from expanded urbanization, extreme cost associated with implementing the North Lawrence Drainage Study, infrastructure costs for development within the regulatory floodplain, floodways, and flood prone land.  To read more go to N.E. Sector Planning Process

Yes, Just for the Taste of It

We are taking back basic phrases in the English language which have been usurped by ubiquitous products. Phrases like "Just do it," "I'm lovin' it," or "It's what's for dinner," need to be free for all of us to use to convey our message. So, this week, it's "Just for the taste of it." That is why many people fall in love with farmers' market in the first place, right? It's a matter of taste. Yes, these markets support small, regional businesses. Yes, their practices may be more in line with what we think is best for our world. Yes, they are fun places to interact with the people who grow our food and other people in our neighborhood. Though, when it comes down to it, most people would not keep coming if the food didn't taste so darn good! Nothing store- bought can touch real, fresh vegetables, fruits and baked goods.

__

We know you are a person of great taste and that's why we strive to bring high quality, delicious and beautiful seasonal goods to the market each Wednesday. Join us from 4:30 until 7:30 pm at the intersection of Westport Road and Wyoming Street in KC, MO.

CONGRESSIONAL NEWS

Washington continued down the long and winding road toward a budget agreement this week.  Depending on one’s point of view, nothing happened or lots happened.  What did not happen was introduction of a Senate budget resolution, much less mark-up of a resolution in the Senate Budget Committee.  But here are some of the things that did happen.
  • The gang of six bicameral, bipartisan congressional leaders meeting with Vice President Biden has so far agreed on approximately $200 billion in spending cuts as part of a potential deal that would secure majority congressional support for an increase in the debt ceiling.    Read more...

20110521 - Brookside Farmers' Market - Saturdays 8am - 1pm

Last evening, coming in from the garden, dirty and pleasantly tired I sat watching the storm roll in and checking for alerts on the news and computer.  Within an instant, I found myself sitting in complete dark, no lights, no buzzing of electrical appliances, pure quiet and nearly complete darkness.  Needless to say, it changed the course of my evening and subsequently postponed this market newsletter (oh, and the server has been down most of the day).  I was struck at how instantly I was connected to nature, and forced to adapt and respond.  Candles, lanterns and a book later, I realized how soulful my evening had become.  That’s what nature does.  It takes us away from faux lighting, faux reality and faux food.  That is part of our draw to local food & farmers.  We find ourselves connected to something real and soulful.  The farmer holds the seed in their hands, reintroduces it to the soil, nurtures it along and lovingly harvests it and brings it to market for our tables.  By using and buying local food, we are connected to something very special, not to mention the flavor, color and freshness that it offers.  Let’s continue to respect local food and local farmers not only for the food they supply, but for reconnecting us to the earth and the magical soulfulness it contains.

Shout out to our new vendors:

From Ryan Stubbe at Native Nest Incubator Farm

I will be bringing Bokashi to the market this Saturday. Bokashi means fermented organic matter in Japanese. Bokashi composting uses a selected group of microorganisms to anaerobically ferment organic waste. It can be used right in your kitchen for odorless composting.  The microorganisms are applied using a impregnation carrier such as wheat bran. The process is very fast and usually takes less than two weeks. Once the fermentation has completed you can add the scraps to a worm bin or bury them directly in the soil. Unlike more conventional composting systems bokashi systems can break down heavier items like meat, fish and cheese.

Even a child could do it. It’s Righteous Rot!!

PJ's  Paul & Judy Miller

Hello Pam,
We are planning on being at Brookside Sat 14th, our first time. Excited, and looking forward to our first big day. We will be bringing Shiitake Mushrooms, Free Range, cage free fresh brown eggs. Also, we will have some recycled, repurposed plant/garden stakes, antique “chippy”,  rusty ceiling tin pieces along with other handmade items. We will see you Saturday.

Here’s what’s Flavorful:

CHEF’S DEMO
Speaking of all things “soulful”, we have a special treat starting at 10 am Saturday.  Shanita McAfee, Chef & Proprietor of Magnolia’s catering  will be preparing some combination of the following, featuring products from our vendors:

Open Face Steak & Eggs
Cast-iron Seared Steak, Caramelized Onion Tomato Jam & Sautéed Spinach Greens on Sweet Potato Biscuit
 Morning After
Herb Cheddar biscuit, Arugula Salad, Ham & Poached Egg
 Magnolias Nicoise Salad
Mixed Greens, Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Pickled Beets, Hard Boiled Egg, Tomatoes, Greens Beans & Cider Vinaigrette
You can see Shanita’s impressive bio on our blog atwww.brooksidefarmersmarket.blogspot.com.

Here’s what’s FUN:

CHILDREN’S CORNER and Growing Brookside Kids will be learning about good and bad bugs for the garden and will be making their own insecticides from organic ingredients. All kids activities are free.  However, we could really use supplies and volunteers.  Please, visit our blog at www.brooksidefarmersmarket.blogspot.com for more info, or pick up a flyer at the market tent this Saturday.

Here’s what’s FRESH:

Back Acres Farm
We’re looking forward to a great morning Saturday at Brookside!  We’ll have more delicious heads of lettuce, leaf lettuce, a few cabbages, and this week we’ll have the firstSTRAWBERRIESof the season!  YUM!!  Until then, we’re out in the garden……

From the Gibbs Road Community Farm and Cultivate Kansas City!(formally known as the KC Center for Urban Agriculture)

It’s been a big week around here and when you come for veggies, you’ll see why.  We’ve changed our name from KCCUA to Cultivate Kansas City!  Kinda catchy, isn’t it?  We like it.   In our sixth year as a non-profit, we’ve put together a new strategic plan, we’ve grown a lot into a lot of different things (still urban agriculture related) and feel it is time to gather ourselves up and present the organization in a way that better describes our broader goals.  We’re the same farmers.  We’ll have the same veggies.  Only the name has been changed (as they say).  And the tablecloths…wait til you see them!  They make us smile.  In addition to all the hubbub, we’ll bring some great veggies.  It’s that wonderful time of year when the greens are greenest and spring crops are coming on.  We’ll have beautiful Swiss chard, spinach, collard greens, kale (in three varieties), Funky Fresh stir-fry mix, salad mix, lettuce mix, microgreens, arugula and watercress.  Chinese cabbage, kohlrabi, head lettuce, turnips in white and in red, beets, carrots, radishes.  Cucumbers!  Spring garlic! Dive bomb onions.  Fresh herbs.  We bring many recipe ideas to go along with most veggies.  We’ll also be bringing loads of transplants.  This is the time.  We’ve got your plants.  Lots of tomato varieties, eggplant, peppers, herbs, Swiss chard and more.  We’ll look for you Saturday.  You’ll recognize us.  We’ll just be new and shiny.  So, well, you may not recognize us, but we will recognize you.  Come by, chat a bit and let us know what you think about our news.

From Kim at Wells Family Farms
So this week I will bring all cuts and plenty of ground!  Get your grills ready, we have some of the best steaks you can find.  Dry Aged 15 days Filet, KC Strip and Ribeye will get you going. Don't forget the Bug Repellant so you can stay outdoors and not get stung or bit.  Even chiggers won't get you. Diatomaceous Earth to help keep the parasite and bugs under control, in the house, garden, in and on your pets.  Also, good for us, with all the trace minerals available.  I will be sifting manure this week, so if you need the best for your growing goodies, stop by for our Horse Leavins'
For special orders please email.
See you all Saturday.

From Blue Door Farm

Hi everyone - I have some big news for Saturday:  My marvelous mom, Helyn, and erstwhile assistant, Joe, will be covering market for me this week as I have a workshop to attend to.  They'll have plenty of veggies and garden transplants for you and are happy to help you find what you need.

On the veggie table this week:
- Big, beautiful heads of "Joi Choi", a white stemmed pac choi that is great raw, in stir fries, lightly marinated in cold salads, and more. It has a mild flavor and a great juicy crunch to it.
- Head lettuce - more of that great red bibb/romaine plus butterhead, green leaf and more
- Lettuce mix
- Mustard greens - a beautiful mix of three kinds of mustard
- Stir fry mix - pac choi, mustard, gai-lan and spring garlic, ready for a quick and tasty saute.
- Spring garlic - Okay, this really will be the last week. This is now the soft neck variety of garlic, but I'd like to let the rest of both the hard neck and softneck garlic size up into full size garlic.
- White Icicle Radishes - beautiful, crispy, juicy with some nice finishing heat. Great sliced thin.
- Spinach
- Hakurei turnips - Hurrah! I love these turnips.  These will be smaller sized and mild, perfect for raw snacking or cooking lightly.

We'll also have many different garden transplants, including herbs (you gotta try the spicy "Zaatar" oregano), flowers (nasturtiums and marigolds and cosmos oh my), and of course, veggies.  The tomato plants are looking great, the pepper plants are beautiful (for you hot pepper fiends out there, I'll have two habanero varieties - "Jamaican Hot Chocolate" and "Fatali", as well as Thai, Serrano, Anaheim, Mariachi, Hungarian Wax and Fish hot peppers).  And yes, I'll have some nice mild sweet peppers too. Be nice to my mom and Joe and I'll see you all in a week!

Red Ridge Farms:  Warm and Windy with scattered showers- perfect for the farm:  the plants get a timely overnight drink and we don't have to run irrigation, the warmth is really making the veggies jump up, and the wind dries out the soil enough that we can get in and work the beds every day- can't ask for more than that!
Thank you for your patronage - we are so optimistic about farming sustainably- the farm may actually support us someday, and how exciting is that.  Come visit this weekend and find a bargain.  We've potted up a bunch of flower and herb containers, and priced them much cheaper than the individual plants.  Treat yourself to a preplanted garden.  Hopefully the flowers will cooperate and I'll have iris and peony bouquets.  Come shop our table full of sweet crunchy leafy greens:  leaf and head lettuce, spinach, baby kale, arugula, saute mix, and microgreens (cut and by the tray).  Spring onions are getting bigger and bigger.  I'll snip some pea shoots- those are getting quite a following- come try them if you haven't yet.  We'll continue to bring those yummy radishes, and may have a few bizarre looking carrots as well.  We'll also have herb transplants, a few annuals, tomatoes, and peppers.  New this year is variegated ginger, beautiful and edible.  Pick up a bunch of herbs while you are there:  chives, spearmint, parsley, cilantro, dill, oregano, and chocolate mint.  You've got to try the chocolate mint in a cup of coffee.  Divine.  Real flavored cup o' joe.
If you have purchased our rodent repellent- come tell us how it is working.  We will be gathering data all summer and tweaking the recipe to make it the best we can.
See you Saturday!  -Ami and Jim

From Bread of Life

Hello Brookside Market ,

We are ready for another nice day at market this week.  Our days have been
busy at both our whole grain bakery and our gluten free bakery. Many people are
finding that they do better with a gluten free diet or are being diagnosed with
Celiac disease. We make both gluten free and dairy free breads and
snacks.  Luke and Chris will be there with burritos and quiches made with farm fresh
eggs and market veggies.  Our baked goods will also be available and our raspberry bars and granola bars
go fast!  So come and enjoy the market with a cup of coffee and a burrito or raspberry
bars
 See you Saturday,
Luke, Chris and Kathy

In addition to luscious spring greens - Romaine & Boston Bibb Lettuces, Pak Choi, Spinach, Chards, Radishes & Bulls Blood Red Beet Greens - we will bring lots of hanging baskets of vining tomato plants. These Tumbling "Toms" are prolific producers of tasty salad-sized fruits. The plants are just starting to bloom and before you know it you'll be snacking on these tasty tomatoes!. Baskets contain 2 plants, one red and one yellow producing. There are a few baskets that have two red-producing plants and a few even with basil planted with them. We will also be continuing our special on on daylilies and hostas through the end of the month - or until we sell out - buy 3 (mix or match) and get a Stella D'Oro daylily free! We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Bear Creek Farms

A busy week here - after last Saturday's frost the weather has turned perfect for planting so we've been hard at it. The second tomato planting is done, summer squash, cucumbers, peppers, and eggplant are all out in the fields. That's a huge job and I'm thrilled! Now bring on the sun, timely rains and no weeds!  This week at market we'll have more plants for your gardens - herbs, heirloom tomatoes, fruits, peppers and more. Plow up that yard, fill it with plants and enjoy a summer filled with fresh, home grown food.  As for produce - we'll have baby bok choi, asparagus, incredibly beautiful head lettuces, spinach, green onions, spring garlic, beets and more. Hope you are enjoying this amazing weather - the lightning bugs are back! See you Saturday!

This week we will have a selection of hand-crafted organic caramels including a Chocolate-Oatmeal Stout caramel, Rosemary, Sea Salt, and Spicy Pecan. We also will have artisan organic shortbread in traditional Scottish and Rosemary Lemon, as well as Brownies.   We will also have hand printed t-shirts and aprons, and perhaps some artwork as well.
Thanks again for everything.

From Green Dirt Farm
We'll have plenty of delicious aged sheep's milk cheeses on hand this
week: best-selling Bossa (the first of the season!), Dirt Lover (styled
after classic ash-dusted French farmhouse cheeses), and Woolly Rind (our
version of a classic Camembert). You'll find lots of our spreadable Fresh
Cheeses, too, in every flavor: Plain, Rosemary, Nettle, Lovage, Confetti
and Firecracker. Don't miss our new handmade cutting boards and insulated
coolers: they make it easy to keep cheese, eggs, veggies and more chilled
while you shop! Look forward to seeing you at the market.

Hello from Muroak Farm. It has been a good week with not a dull moment.  We have just finished planting our tomatoes and pole beans.  Now we are gearing up to get out squash, cucumbers, etc..  This week we should have Red Russian Kale, Radishes, Spinach, Spring Garlic, Romaine Lettuce, Strawberry plants ( a great old fashion variety), Blackberry plants, Tomato plants, and Potted Cosmos Flowers.  Our wood items, clocks, mirrors, etc. have been selling well.  Stop by and take a look at a desk clock.  They make great Father’ Day gifts.  See you Saturday.

Fresh Opportunities
Coming to your neighborhood this week, we'll have a wide range of new additions to the market.   First off, we are proud to announce that we will be accepting SNAP, Vision and Quest food stamp cards at the market for double their value through the Beans and Greens program.  In addition, we can take debit cards for your regular market purchases.  Come visit the market tent (the one with the lil' window) for details.
Monthly darwings for valuable gifts and prizes begin this week with a sweet deal from one of our vendors.  Kathi, from Ms Fit Ranch has offered to provide a half off coupon to her Bed and Breakfast at her lovely farm near Liberty.  Fill out a free raffle ticket with your name and email address at all of your points of purchase at the market and you will have a chance to be a winner (or more of a winner than you already are)!   We'll draw your ticket at the end of market and email you if you've won.
On a musical note, the Green Spirit Band will inspire and uplift with their conscious harmonies. Stan Slaughter, Linda Chubbock and Judy Best are local favorites among KC's environmental movers and shakers.  You can hear their music and find out more by clicking here.
The state of Missouri's farmer advocacy organization, AgriMissouri will be inviting you to sign up to be a part of their 10,000 Garden Challenge.  This initiative has been building excitement among home gardeners in the state and is bringing attention to the many Missourians who love to plant and harvest (and even the few who love to weed and hoe).  Get your growing space on the list Wednesday!
