We will make jams and jellies using pectin, sugarless pectin, no cook pectin, and finally the old fashioned way of cooking the fruit and sugar down until it sets into a wonderful preserve!!

Planned recipes (depending on fruit availability) include strawberry preserves, mint jelly and orange marmalade. Come ready to taste the delectable differences and decide on the method you like best. *Water bath

2010 ~ YEAR OF URBAN AGRICULTURE (Seattle, WA)

From:

2010:
The Year of
Urban Agriculture
Promoting community agriculture
efforts and increased access
to locally grown food

On April 29th, 2010 DPD released a SEPA Determination of Nonsignificance (DNS) for code changes to remove barriers to urban agriculture. The proposed legislation includes recommendations to add and/or clarify the definitions of key agricultural terms; expand opportunities for community gardens and urban farms in all zones; allow rooftop greenhouses dedicated to food production a 15 foot exception to height limits; add farmers' markets to the definition of a "multipurpose retail sales" use; increase the number of domestic fowl allowed on a lot from three to eight; and, allow existing urban horse farms greater than ten acres to operate as a permitted use in single-family zones.

These code changes are a key component in the "2010: The Year of Urban Agriculture" campaign to promote urban agriculture efforts and increase community access to locally grown food.

For more information on DPD's work on code changes for urban agriculture, and to comment on the proposed code changes, please visit the project website:www.seattle.gov/dpd/urbanagriculture.

Overland Park Farmers Market - Local Growers Take Management Issues Public

Have Commies Taken Over a Farmers Market in Kansas?

from:

Truly Local

A major brouhaha has erupted this spring in Overland Park, Kansas, over the expulsion of nearly a dozen longtime vendors from the popular local farmers market. Managers of the market, which is run by the Overland Park Downtown Partnership, have inexplicably refused to explain why the vendors were booted. It is equally inexplicable that the Kansas City Star, which has reported on the evictions from the market and the ensuing furor, hasn’t done a little bit of digging to get to the bottom of the story.

Anonymous commentators have been all too happy to fill the void with rumors and innuendo on invective-laced web forums.

The Star has reported that vendors who were told not to bother showing up at the market this year received termination letters in January which stated simply that “transition is necessary in order to meet the expectations and interests of today’s consumer.” Robin Fish, executive director of the partnership, has declined to offer further comment about the controversy, according to the Star. Paul Lyons, a member of the City Council who sits on the partnership’s board, has gone as far as to say that he “had an opinion about” the ousted vendors, but he has refused to say what that opinion might be.

The disinvited vendors haven’t been mum. They have picketed the market to protest their ouster. And they have told newspaper reporters that they believe they were kicked out because they refused to succumb to pressure from market managers to raise their prices -- demands that they said were illegal....

URBAN AG RIDES AGAIN... Meeting at KCMO City Hall Today (Wed 5/12/2010)

WATCH CHANNEL 4's RECENT URBAN AGRICULTURE INTERVIEW:

Today, the Planning and Zoning Committee of the Kansas City, MO City Council meets once again to take up the issue of urban agriculture in the city’s many diverse neighborhoods. At the last hearing, the committee focused on details of regulating urban agriculture. Some of the ideas that were floated made good sense to us, others would place new and burdensome restrictions on the act of growing healthy food for Kansas City neighborhoods.

The City Council has an opportunity to give residents the choice of neighborhood-based access to locally grown food and neighborhood-based green businesses and jobs. It has an opportunity to step forward and embrace urban agriculture as one of many effective strategies for community development, healthy eating, and neighborhood revitalization. They need your support though to be creative and forward thinking on the question of growing food in Kansas City neighborhoods, so your presence at the hearing will be important!

The group of residents, growers and health activists that have been working on this are supporting amendments to the proposed ordinance that would allow for a grower (whether private or a non profit organization) to apply for a Special Use Permit if they want to sell their home-grown produce on site and if they want to create employment opportunities in urban agriculture. A special use permit isn’t ideal to our minds, but it would give individual communities the power to define for themselves what makes for a healthy, live-able and quality neighborhood.

Please show up today for the Hearing!

Wednesday, May 12, 1:30 pm, 10th Floor, City Hall
414 E. 12th, Street, Kansas City, MO

Come early, the room they have moved the hearing to will seat fewer people- we want to make sure that the people who support Kansas City taking steps to become a growing community are in the room!

Hello Brookside Market Friends,

We are busy this week preparing for Luke and Mandi's wedding.
For those of you that do not know, Luke is getting married this Saturday at 4:00pm to a wonderful girl, Mandi. Luke still plans on being at Brookside until 12:00 so come by and wish him well.
Chris will be back with Luke this week also and he is now a married man and ready to help Luke with market and to make sure he gets to his wedding on time.

Kathy, Luke and Chris

Red Ridge Farms

New this week (just in time for Mother's Day) we are bringing back our famous flower and herb containers- lots of color in some and lots of potential in others!! Check out our toad abode and other crafts. We will continue having a variety of greens including microgreens, lettuce mix, spinach, arugula, cress, and very-young & tender pea shoots. Fresh cut herbs, radishes, spring onions, ramps (wild garlic), and a few portions of baby pac choi will also be for sale. Transplants galore! Ask about our Brookside CSA option- we have 3 spots left.

From the KC Community Farm

It has been a great way to start the market this year. Among the growers
and customers, there seems to be a fresh sense of connection and enthusiasm for our unique farmers' market, for local agriculture and for healthy food.

Maybe it's partly the weather? So far it has made growing your food a lot
of fun around here. Thanks to Alicia, KCCF farm manager, and her crew and volunteers, the fields look tidy, mulched, weeded and productive (and that's not easy this time of year!).

Perhaps the other reason we're feeling so good at the market has to do with our new market manager, Pam Bramlett. She's doing such terrific work for us, and her skills and enthusiasm are amazing. Many thanks, Pam, for spreading a great vibe!

On our tables this week you'll find a nice selection of certified organic
spring vegetables, so bring along your recipes and an extra bag. We'll have great root vegetables including RADISHES, TURNIPS, BEETS and CARROTS. From the allium family we'll bring more taste-it-to-believe-it SPRING GARLIC as well as SPRING ONIONS, LEEKS and SCALLIONS. Lots of great-tasting greens including HEAD LETTUCE, CHINESE CABBAGE and SPINACH and we'll have our delicious bagged SALAD & LETTUCE MIXES. You'll also find BRAISING MIX (a changing mix of kale, turnip greens, pac choi, mustard greens and more) as well as ARUGULA, WATERCRESS, PEASHOOTS and MICROGREENS (for a most beautiful and delicious fresh salad!). We'll round off the table with bunches of KALE, SWISS CHARD and COLLARDS as well as BROCCOLI RAAB (a spring treat that won't last long :). And did I mention KOLLRABI and CUCUMBERS?

And for you vegetable gardeners we'll have more TRANSPLANTS, including lots of tomatoes, peppers and eggplant as well as a variety of herb transplants. This is the best time for planting these warm-season vegetables and it looks like the weather will be great for gardening most of the weekend. Thanks to you all for your support. We appreciate it!

Border Star Montessori will be doing “scratchboard art” this week and reusable snack bags. I’m not sure what scratchboard art is, but it sounds really fun!!! Also, look for Alex’s Organic Cupcakes either this week or next week. They are a favorite at Border Star! Pam

Bear Creek Farms

Can you beat this weather??!! Hope all of you are finding time to get out and play!

Busy week here - still planting - and still have squash, okra, melons and cukes to go. The kids - Lonnie and Jeanna - are loving market. Thanks to everyone for helping them along. Jeanna swears that next year she'll know every tomato - and I just don't have the heart to tell her I change the offering every year!

Saturday sounds like the perfect day - cool and sunny. Hope everyone gets to the market! We'll have lots more plants, beautiful head lettuce and whatever else we can find.

Robbins and Jim
Lonnie and Jeanna

This week I'm bringing out some of the warmer weather crops such as peppers and eggplants. We'll also have our list of cherry and big heirloom tomatoes. I will bring a couple of those wonderful American cranberry bushes and Elderberries as well as some other fun things for us Foods Not Lawns folks. The thing I'm most excited about this week is our recycled kitty litter earth boxes. You can use these to grow your tomato, pepper or eggplants right on a deck or patio as long as it gets sun. The best part about these is they are made almost entirely out of recycled materials and are organic to top it off. Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

Dave Wilson
CityLights Nursery & Raytown's Green Acres

Blue Door will be at market with great transplants to get your garden going strong. In addition to veggie transplants, I'll have more nasturtiums, some beautiful petunia baskets, and some new flowers that are just coming into bloom: osteospernum, variety "Sky and Ice" - it's a daisy type flower with a purple center and very, very pale lavender petals. Gorgeous (and it will bloom, bloom, bloom).
On the veggie front, look for more chard, leaf lettuce and other tasty spring treats. The spring garlic is looking great, so jump on this seasonal specialty while you can.
See you Saturday!
