Local Solutions for Transition to a Sustainable Economy

ECO RADIO KC ¤ WEEKLY ECOLOGICAL ISSUES RADIO SHOW
Tuesday, 20 July 2010, 12:00noon ¤ on Kansas City Community Radio
Listen at KKFI-FM 90.1, or on web-streaming at http://www.kkfi.org/

On Eco-Radio KC this week, host Steve Mann and guest Maureen Veto Slater will explore Conscious Life Style, Gratitude and Blissfulness in an Eco-Consciousness framework, as well as the upcoming "Green Fest" in Parkville.

Stay tuned at 12:30 when the Bioneers radio series presents "Becoming a Habitat: Motherhood, Faith, and the Environmental Human Rights Movement". We live in a society dependent on toxic chemicals. Today about 287 such chemicals trespass inside the blood of newborns – and inside all of us - without our consent. Despite the odds, ecologist, author and mother Sandra Steingraber is an optimist. She’s betting that the burgeoning global environmental human rights movement will free us from our deadly dependency. She believes our grandchildren will look back on us and marvel that our economy was once dependent on toxic chemicals - and they will think of it as unthinkable.

BP "MACONDO PROSPECT" NOT YET CONTAINED ¤ ONGOING CONSEQUENCES

The new containment cap on the damaged wellhead is temporarily holding in the petroleum, but the pressure has not reached the minimum of the "ambiguity range" of well integrity - Oil Seep Near BP Well Could Mean Trouble. This means that there are other leak points in the well casing below the seabed that are releasing pressure - and oil. The fat lady may not sing for a long time. The following article is probably the most comprehensive assessment of current conditions and future implications, along with some exceptional photographs and embedded links - The Source of Our Despair in the Gulf.

HOT ENOUGH FOR YA? ¤ 1ST HALF OF 2010 IS GLOBALLY THE HOTTEST YET

The first six months of 2010 has been warmer than the first half of 1998, the previous record holder, by 0.03 degree Fahrenheit, said Jay Lawrimore, chief of climate analysis at the federal National Climatic Data Center - World Simmers in Hottest Year So Far. Abnormally warm temperatures have been registered in large parts of Canada, Africa, tropical oceans and parts of the Middle East, as well as the eastern seaboard of the United States.

As the heat index keeps rising and the litany of "hottest year ever" keeps repeating yearly, we at S.A.N. wonder if anyone in power is listening or even cares. We noticed that this report is from the National Climatic Data Center, which is operationally within the science driven NOAA Climate Services. But the NOAA is administratively within, and controlled by, the Department of Commerce, whose purpose is to promote economic growth. Might it just be possible that the decision makers at Commerce consider infinitively expanding growth to trump concerns of climate disruption? After all, they did create the NOAA Climate Services Office for the purpose of "mitigating and adapting to climate change, [and] in the process, discover new technologies, build new businesses and create new jobs - Establishment of NOAA Climate Service. Mitigating and adapting? Mitigating and adapting is not reversing climate disruption.

OUTERMOST THERMOSPHERE COLLAPSES BY RECORD EXTENT

An upper layer of Earth's atmosphere recently collapsed in an unexpectedly large contraction, the sheer size of which has scientists scratching their heads - Earth's upper atmosphere collapses -nobody knows why. The collapse occurred during a period of relative solar inactivity – called a solar minimum from 2008 to 2009. These minimums are known to cool and contract the thermosphere, however, the recent collapse was two to three times greater than low solar activity could explain. Inexplicable anomalies and volatilities seem to be becoming the "norm".

10/10/10 ¤ COMMUNITY ACTION CLIMATE SOLUTIONS

350.org, the inspiration of Bill McKibben, has launched 10/10/10, a major campaign of grassroots action on climate disruption. On 10 October 2010, they are asking communities world wide to plan some tangible and real action locally that will contribute to reversing CO2 emissions, global temperature rises, and the 480ppm atmospheric concentration of CO2. These solutions could be planting trees or community gardens, installing solar collectors or wind turbines, holding bicycle workshops, etc. They have some suggested Ideas For Your 10/10 Work Party, and once you have something organized, they are asking you to Register an Event For 10/10/10. Then with a hopefully long list of global civic actions, they plan ask world leaders: “We're getting to work--what about you?” One of their targeted actions is called Put Solar On It, so individuals can directly e-mail world leaders.

SUNFLOWER ELECTRIC COAL PLANT ¤ BACK IN THE PERMIT PROCESS
Permit public hearings:
Monday, 2 August 2010, 2:00pm & 6:30pm
Blue Valley Northwest Highschool, 135th and Switzer, Overland Park (find a map here)

Wednesday, 4 August 2010, 2:00pm & 6:30pm
Highway Patrol Training Center Auditorium, 2025 East Iron, Salina (find a map here)

Thursday, 5 August 2010, 2:00pm & 6:30pm
801 Campus Drive, Garden City (find a map here)

After wasting two years of Kansas Legislature time spent debating, revising and finally defeating two coal fired power stations, a proposed Sunflower Electric 895mw Holcomb Station coal plant is up for new permit hearings. Governor Sebelius vetoed the initial coal plants, but within a week of assuming the Governorship, Mark Parkinson made a deal to allow Sunflower to file another application. Meanwhile, serious and productive plans are languishing for wind power support, transmission line upgrades, consumer financing for renewableenergy, true net metering, etc.

Kansas has a choice of a dirty energy path (clean coal is an oxymoron), or a clean energy path. The Great Plains Alliance for Clean Energy says it best: The dirty path would saddle us with a fifty year commitment to imported, dirty coal with an influx of temporary construction jobs starting in about six years, limited permanent jobs starting in about ten years, and no access to the coming renewable energy economy. The clean path would open up investment in native, cleaner fuels like natural gas and wind that will provide Kansans ongoing job creation, broad revenue opportunities, and the foundation to attract manufacturing and service industries for generations to come…starting in less than two years.

If you choose, the Sierra Club is organizing carpools to the hearings in Overland Park. Go to their Beyond Coal Kansas web site to learn more info about submitting comments or carpooling.

New Roots for Refugees
Imagine being uprooted from your home, fearing for your life and the lives of your family. You leave behind everything, but finally get help in a new country and find a new beginning. Did you know that New Roots for Refugees is a program that helps refugees establish new roots, through teaching them to start their own small farm businesses growing and selling vegetables? It’s a partnership program between Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture.
New Roots farmers will be back for another great week at the market. This week we'll have beautiful heirloom tomatoes! Yesterday for lunch I made a delicious grilled cheese sandwich with a purpley paul robeson tomato and fresh basil fresh from the farm. It was heaven. Oh we've got basil too! And cucumbers, squash, peppers, and much more!

Luke and Chris

Bear Creek Farms

The tomatoes are exploding - we are eating them by the tons . The flavor this year is just outstanding, though we are seeing more scaring on the blossom end - a result of the blooms sticking to the fruit when the plants bloom and set fruit in cool weather. It makes me aware of how long the process is from bloom to tomatoes on my plate - seems forever ago that it was cold!

But tomatoes there are (we picked 700 pounds on Sunday, and now it is Tuesday and time to pick again - we pick every other day), and MELONS! - lovely Dove melons with creamy flesh and sweet! They are a short crop - this week there will be lots - next week only a couple and then that's it. The Sensation melons will be ready soon, but the coons got almost all of the watermelons.

We will also have cabbage for wonderful crisp cool salads, baby eggplant, purple peppers (SWEET!), freshly dug yellow and purple potatoes, onions (try the torpedos and cipollinis!) okra, fresh fragrant basil, zucchini and lots more.

Hope everyone is enjoying summer - seems it is flying by. Everything here is lush and green - 4 more inches of rain this week! So far we have had one day that we could wear shoes in the field - it is so wet we are up to our knees in mud! One thing about farming - every year is different - just when you think you know what you are doing it all changes! Keeps us thinking!

See you Saturday -

Food Not Lawns - KC - OPEN GARDEN EVENT - Saturday, July 24th

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=122561237789139

Hi all, next Saturday, July 24 from 10 am to 1 pm my garden will be open to tour, sponsored by the Garden Center Assoc.

I have long been a proponent of Food Not Lawns before I even knew about this group. I have a small urban lot where grass has been given over to fruit, veggies, various natives and perennials. Much of the front is shaded now but I used to grow food in the front and there are now a couple apple trees next to the curb. The back is where the bounty is. On the way to the back you will see a raised bed with tomatoes and squash in the driveway.

In the back garden is a cherry tree, strawberries, black raspberries, lemons and figs, mixed with native shade plants, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, beans, greens, cucumbers, various herbs and flowers. I also like to recycle curbside treasures as art or for utilitarian purposes.

The GCA has a membership of mostly middle-aged and older people who were influenced to think that a garden is ornamental and food plants should be relegated to pots or an unseen corner. I think this separation mentality has dominated American thinking even among those who plant only food. My purpose, influenced by Rosalind Creasy, is to mix this up and help show the club members another way.

This is not a new idea. In France they plant roses at the edges of wheat fields and at the ends of rows of grapes. See the Villandry website for photos of beautiful but highly maintained food gardens. Persian rug designs were based on beautiful gardens of food plants mixed with ornamentals.

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - A MUST ON FRIDAYS IN THE CROSSROADS

BADSEED

An Urban-Organic Farm & Market
Celebrating Local Food,
Culture, & Community

Precious Eaters -

Listen up - it is hot out there!!! Summer is really here. A whole lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into your food this week.......so enjoy!!! Savor every last mouth-watering minute of it. Their aint nothin' like the hot summer harvest in the midwest, and your gregarious gang of growers are dying to feed you the "fruits of our labor" this Friday at the BADSEED Farmers Market from 4-9 PM. Can you dig it?? I sure hope so....cuz we've been diggin' all day long.

It is 10:51 PM, and my sun-burnt booty needs to cut right to the chase. So without further ado:

***Sexy Veggie of the Week***

This week's runner-up is
none other than the striking Scallop Squash in White Scallop & Patisson Juan et Vert - a pale green French patty pan. These girls are the round & ruffled sisters to zucchini and can be prepared in a variety of delectable dishes like any summer squash. ** While harvesting peppermint today, I was reminded of a particular summer squash dish I encountered in South Eastern Sicily. I was living and working on an 18th century water mill that had been converted into an organic farm. The (aptly Sicilian) farmer lived 8 miles away in town, and would never show up to work before 12 PM. (I started at 7 AM). When he would finally arrive, he would often cook me lunch. One of his favorite dishes was thinly sliced summer squash lightly fried in olive oil, balsamic vinegar, house-made red wine, and mint. He would not only use the mint to flavor the frying oil, but he would sprinkle fresh leaves over the finished master-piece. It was divine! I would never think to pair the two. We would eat this with crusty bread and a generous glass of home-made wine. Then (tipsy and all) we would head out to the field together. (aaaah.....memories.....)

This week's grand-prize-winner is Purple Calabash Tomato.
This painfully sexy and outrageously tasty Heirloom Tomato is ruffled and riddled with charismatic creases. She has a deep purple disposition and a luxuriously rich flavor. Like most tomatoes in the "purple" family, she is full-bodied and devastatingly delicious. The flavor of heirloom tomatoes is often defined by their color. "Purple" tomatoes & "Black" tomatoes tend to be the most full-flavored of the bunch. BADSEED Farm grows a plethora of purple and black tomatoes including Cherokee Purple, Japanese Black Trifle, Black from Tula & Paul Robeson.

Pictures are attached. You know the drill - print them out, blow them up, & plaster them all over the men's room!!
