FARM TOURS - Kansas City CSA Coalition - Summer/Fall 2012

2012 CSA Farm Tour

This year, several of the KCCSAC’s member farms will be hosting farm tours which will be open to the public!  Now, we encourage all of our member farms to hold at least one event at the farm for their CSA members, in order to enhance the relationship among the farmer and his/her CSA members.  It’s all about building community!
What makes these KCCSAC-sponsored farm tours different is that they’re open to, and meant for, both the general public and fellow CSA farmers.  Each visit will begin with a guided tour of the farm, where the farmer will explain how his/her farm works and how CSA fits into the operation.  This will help give everyone a better understanding of the breadth and depth of CSA farming, and how different farmers manage it uniquely.
After the tour, we will break bread together with a potluck picnic, taking a moment to relax alongside fellow local-food lovers — eaters and farmers alike — and enjoy the scenery of the farm.  In order to make these farm visits as sustainable as possible, we request that attendees please provide their own reusable plateware and cutlery, and bring something to sit upon during the picnic.
Families with children are welcome to attend these farm visits; teaching kids where their food originates and how it makes its way onto their plates is the best way (aside from growing it themselves!) to get them to eat their veggies.  We simply ask that parents/guardians always keep an eye on their children, as there is plenty of opportunity for mischief on working farms.
There is no charge for attending the CSA Farm Tours this year; however, donations are always welcome.
All of the CSA Farm Tours begin at 4:30 p.m.
Please RSVP to csac.kc@gmail.com by the dates noted for each Tour you plan to attend.

Saturday in Brookside

Thanks to everyone who celebrated Tomato Festival with us last week! We crowned the prettiest and funkiest tomatoes, ate delicious food from Jasper Mirabile and had a ton of fun! Stay tuned here and on our Facebook page for the next one - Children's Festival - August 11. Also a huge thank you to everyone who brought books for Katalin's book drive for Children's Mercy. She exceeded her goal and donated more than 500 books to kids at Children's Mercy!

Read on for what's happening Saturday 8am - 1pm on the southeast corner of 63rd St and Wornall Rd.

Blue Door Farm

We will be at market with, of course, tomatoes. Both beautiful red slicers, some cherokee purples and plenty of yummy heirloom saladettes. Also on the table: green and purple peppers, cool and crisp cucumbers, tasty scallions, crunchy carrots, sweet beets, green cabbage, dutch yellow shallots, and of course zucchini and yellow squash. **New this week, the first of the sweet, red italian frying peppers** Sales of zukes and squash are down this year folks...what's up? If you need ideas on how to use them just ask any of us vendors. They are awesome grilled, easy and cool in raw salads (I can share a couple recipes), great in ratatouille, super roasted (with tomatoes, what else?) and good for you too (lots of fiber and lutein, especially yellow squash).

BADSEED Friday Funkafresh Farmers' Market ~ @ 1909 McGee (KCMO)

https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=18FEZK94294E6DQVqBe1I30CuaJzVWeiyzoUgLn5kpjw

Burning Bellies -

Man!  I'm on fire right now!!  Sweat is pouring from my brow and my dirty farm clothes are plastered to my body.  I gotta make this short & sweet cuz I'm HOT HOT HOT and I've got heirloom tomatoes on the stove, gettin' nice and saucy.  Farmer Dan and I are canning what's leftover from last week's crazy harvest.

So, I wouldn't be a proper Farmer if I didn't mention the DROUGHT!!!  This is the worst we've seen since 1954!!!  The federal government has declared all counties in Missouri to be a federal disaster area.  We aren't alone - sixty percent of the country is in a drought.  I'm scared folks...real scared.  To be honest, I don't know how much longer URBAVORE can go on.  To date, we've been harvesting around 2 THOUSAND lbs of food a week from our urban plot WITHOUT IRRIGATION!!!  That's pretty damn impressive, right??  But all good things must come to an end and without rain we will not endure.  I aint throwin' in the towel yet - I'm just saying TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BOUNTY NOW cuz it may not be here in weeks to come.  The bottom line is this - Mother Nature is in control. Not us.  Although it breaks my heart to see my crops suffer and burn up, I know that this is part of some greater cycle.  So - Let's all put our best feet forward and CELEBRATE LOCAL FOOD (and hell on earth) This Friday at the BADSEED Farmers' Market from 4-9 pm.

The good news is I've got HEIRLOOM TOMATOES galore (35 varieties!!), cool & crisp CUCUMBERS in baffling quantities, and Two Foot Long Chinese Red Noodle Beans that will blow your freakin' mind.  The veggies are out of control!  It's their last hurrah!!  In addition, 5000 some odd bulbs of garlic have been cured and cleaned and 5000 some odd onions are getting pulled from the field.  Potatoes will get dug soon and if all else fails, these storage crops will keep us going.  Regardless, PRAY FOR RAIN and support your local Farmers all the while.

For all you canners and homesteaders out there -

PICKLING CUKES ON SALE.

BUY 10 LBS OR MORE THIS FRIDAY for a reduced price of $2/lb (from our regular price of $2.50/lb).

Okay, that's all I've got.  I'm gonna wipe the sweat from my eyes and return to the fiery kitchen.  Those maters' must get canned!!  On with the revolution...

Up-Coming "Urban Homesteading" Class

Introduction To Pressure Canning
https://www.facebook.com/events/206937496081960/

Sunday, July 29th, 1-4 PM
For those of you wanting to take your homesteading one step further, this is the class for you.  Take the pressure out of pressure canning!!  It’s easy and allows you to preserve low-acid foods not possible with a water bath canner including beans, carrots, corn, squash, savory broths, chopped meats, stews and delicious vegetable soups.
In this class we will demonstrate the safe use of two different types of pressure canners: the dial and weighted gauge types. We will prepare two tasty recipes, dependent on produce availability.  Brands, sources, and sizes of pressure canners will also be discussed.
Cost of Class: $50.00

** MUST SIGN-UP ASAP, send in attached registration form with payment!!

Sexy Veggie of the Week

This week's Runner-Up is the totally outrageous Two Foot Long Chinese Red Noodle Bean.

What can I say... this is one astounding looking bean!  At URABVORE, the bean plants use corn stalks as trellising and the two-foot-long burgundy pods dangle in the air like other-worldly serpents.  It is quite a site.  I love picking these fantastical beans cuz I feel like I'm in some sort of fairy tale.  When I'm finished picking, I can use these babies like whips and get my apprentices to work faster!!  Or I can put em' on my head (so that I resemble a sweaty Medusa) and scare the daylights out of Farmer Dan...at which point he and "Baby Perseus" try to cut my head off.  Alright, alright, all bad joking aside, these beans are not only entertaining but delectable.  They have a crisp texture with a nutty flavor that does wonders for any stir-fry.  Heat up a wok with hot oil, throw in some chile pepper and garlic, and fry these babies with tofu and any other veggies you have on hand.  If the heat is too much, try eating them raw in salads.  Either way, you'll be in noodle-bliss.

This week's Grand-Prize-Winner is the mouthwatering Aunt Ruby's German Green Heirloom Tomato.

God Damn, I say God Damn!!  Pardon my language but this is one hell of a tomato.  This large, green beefsteak variety comes from Ruby Arnold of Greeneville, Tennessee who passed away in 1997.  These awesome 1 lb fruits have a (slightly) flattened body with yellow-green skin that blushes a gorgeous salmon pink when ripe.  The lime green flesh imparts sheer tomato bliss with adequate sweetness and a subtle spiciness.  It is that slight  spicy "bite" that makes this mater' so damn unique.  Sadly, Aunt Ruby's is often over-looked on the market table.  Despite my urgings, customers think it is an under-ripe red tomato or they are frightened by it's large size.  It's a real shame!!  Too many times have I packed up GORGEOUS German Greens after market, thinking "why don't they understand!!".  Don't let your taste buds miss out another week!!  Get wid' it this Friday and load up on these KILLER TOMATOES!!!
Pictures are attached.  You know the drill - print them out, blow them up, and plaster them all over the men's room!!
