Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED

Howdy Friends, Locavores, and "Oh So Picky" Eaters,

This is your ruthless and exhausted Farmer Brooke here trying to remain "peppy" for the next few minutes so that I can write you an absolutely convincing and inspiring "market e-mail" aboutthis Friday's Farmers Market extravaganza full of renegade farmers and freaks and local-organic FOOD at BADSEED from 4:30 to 9 PM!!

Staying dry? I sure as hell am not. What a spring! Dan and I spent the off-season in Italy working on a small goat dairy. It was our "working" marriage/honey moon. It rained every single day for two months! Needless to say we were excited to get our soggy selves back to the ole' midwest and begin what we assumed would be a much dryer farm season. Low and behold, we brought the rain with us.

BADSEED Farm Up-Date:
Well, Dan and I are still standing (barely). However most of our crops are not. We have experienced natures "wrath" this year with a domino effect of mishaps. First we lost half of our production when we had to abandon a piece of land dedicated to storage crops, then we basically lost the remainder of our production to standing water, slugs, and no sun or warmth to counteract them. Such situations can be hard on a new marriage, a business, and one's soul (for that matter). We are physically, emotionally, and spiritually drained having given all of ourselves in the process of trying to salvage those precious plants in that soggy ground. We are hoping for a turn-around with our summer crops, so please bare with us!!! But......

Don't despair. Local organic delights are still abound as the BADSEED Market's gang of urban growers are here to save the day with their glorious greens, tenacious transplants, and otherspring goodies. Not to mention artisanal GOAT CHEESE from Goats Beard Farm, Free-Range Eggs with Burnt Orange Yolks, and Kombucha "Mushroom" Tea!! Oh My!

This week from our Green-Thumbed Misfits:

Herb"n"Gardener
Lew Edminster
West Side, KCMO
"Hooray! This week i'll have some actual mixed salad greens, a combination known only to myself and a few garden gnomes. Some arugula could appear as well providing the sun appears this week for more than three hours....."

Root Deep Urban Farm
Sherri Harvel
East Side, KCMO
Sherri will have gorgeous transplants including heirloom tomatoes, herbs, and flowers. As well as freshly pulled easter egg radishes, and a plethora of earthly greens.

Platte Prairie Farms
Steve Mann (aka Squash Father)
North Side, KCMO
"Friday I will have a new product - Cat Grass from Platte Prairie Farms in three inch clay pots - Vibrant, green, growing Kamut Grass.
"Cats in Ancient Egypt enjoyed Kamut Grass that was planted by the Farmer of the Priestess of Isis in the Temple Gardens." Now your cat can receive the health benefits of this ancient grain.
I will also have salad greens mix, sweet potatoes, squash babys, bamboo plants, shoots and canes."

BADSEED Farm
Brooke Salvaggio and Daniel Heryer
South Side, KCMO
This week we will have a variety of righteous medicinal and culinary herb transplants and flowers including russian tarragon, pink sunday sage, german thyme, oregano, dill, african marigolds, purple ruffles basil, lemon balm, calendula, chamomile, and gorgeous cockscomb. We will do our best to swim out and harvest the few veggies wearing life jackets.....(haha)

Puddin' Head Coffee
George and Vicki Hartmann
KCMO
Horray for our local roasters!!! They keep me awake at market!!!
"For those of you who aren't familiar with our company, we are a local micro-roaster offering organic and fairly traded coffees, much of which are shade grown.
Friday we will have Rainforest Blend, Ethiopia Blue Nile Blend and Decaf Peru. Free samples available as well as coffee sold by the cup. We will also be serving organic hot tea and Vicki's organic hot cocoa. For the home roaster we will have raw green coffee beans available."
So come on down this Friday and bring your smiling face ( I really need to see one) and your empty belly. Fill up on local-organic goodness grown ethically, with love, and close to home!!! Oh and quit doing those silly rain dances will ya!

Urban Chicken Growers Elicit Controversy - Local Govt. Responses Vary - Local Food Movement Gaining Momentum

Urban chicken movement
taking roost in KC area

By JOE LAMBE
The Kansas City Star

Chickens could be coming to roost in a backyard near you.

Across the country and the metropolitan area, people are joining the national urban chicken movement, sometimes turning outlaw to raise the birds.

The movement started with the rationale that raising chickens fits in with efforts toward local and pure foods, supporters say, and the eggs are fresh and flavorful. The animals also are entertaining pets, many say.

Today, Overland Park homeowner David Crupper will seek a special-use permit to house up to four chickens, even though he already has the birds and a homemade coop in his backyard.

No disrespect for the law was intended, he said, but he had to buy the chicks before a farm supply business stopped selling them for the year. Crupper, 25, a financial adviser, is far from a hippie, he said, but he wants to get great eggs from “the girls.”

“It’s a nice little hobby people can get behind,” he said, and he thinks his neighbors will support him.

Crupper has mailed certified letters to all of the neighbors within 200 feet and has posted a sign in his front yard advising them of the Planning Commission meeting.

But precedent isn’t on Crupper’s side. Four years ago, another Overland Park family tried to get such a permit. By a vote of 7-5, the City Council wouldn’t allow it.

Opponents said then that chickens did not belong in Overland Park. Some said the birds were unsanitary.

Overland Park City Councilman Jim Hix, who voted against the chickens in 2005, said this week that he would probably do so again.

“Wanting eggs is not unique,” he said. “It’s not a good idea to have chickens in a suburban area under normal circumstances.”

In Mission, the City Council recently sent to committee a proposal to change its law to allow urban chickens. Jerritt Dayhoff requested the change because her family would like to raise five or six chickens. She is a former Jackson County public defender who grew up on a farm, she said.

“Chickens are a heck of a lot quieter and cleaner than dogs,” said Dayhoff, 33. They make interesting pets, she said, and “It’s nice to tell your kids your breakfast came from Myrtle or Madge.”

But Councilman John Weber, 77, said he has seen the city grow out of farmland and sees no reason to go back.

“If we’re going to be residential, we ought to be residential,” he said.

Some cities on board

In 2004, Madison, Wis., was among the first of several cities to change laws to allow limited numbers of chickens, but usually not crowing roosters. New York City has long allowed chickens. The birds live in urban areas in Chicago; Albuquerque, N.M.; Portland, Ore.; Seattle; and other cities.

Many Web sites and Backyard Poultry magazine support the effort, which they say is still growing in this country, Great Britain and Canada.

BackYardChickens.com has 30,000 members — up from 20,000 last December — and it grows by 100 members a day, said its owner, Rob Ludlow.

KT LaBadie, an Albuquerque graduate student who started UrbanChickens.org, said people are tearing out lawns to grow vegetables, and chickens are a natural next step.

Some cities have changed their laws because so many people were keeping chickens illegally, she said.

Afoul of the law

In Kansas City, residents are allowed to have chickens only if they are 100 feet away from the nearest home or business, and the birds are not allowed to roam.

That hasn’t stopped two women in different Kansas City neighborhoods from raising chickens illegally, and they say they are doing it for the fresh eggs.

At one house, nine big chickens roam in a fenced backyard where a wooden chicken coop looks like a garden shed. The 28-year-old homeowner has given names to all nine of her chickens, and she has pictures of herself with each on her MySpace page. The hens produce about six or seven eggs a day, and she sells or trades any extra eggs to pay for feed.

In another Kansas City neighborhood, a 49-year-old woman raises just one chicken.

The hen, called simply Chicken, spends time in the garden this time of year, scratching up the soil and fertilizing it with its droppings. In winter, it lives in a coop in the basement. Chicken lays about five eggs a week.

Light enforcement

Both of the Kansas City women said their neighbors haven’t complained, and some are checking into getting chickens themselves.

So does that mean more chickens and lawbreaking are on the way?

Dave Marak, a supervisor with Kansas City animal control, said a crew recently took five illegal chickens to the animal shelter, something it does occasionally.

Few people retrieve chickens there because of a $25 pickup fee and $10 a day in expenses, he said, plus chicken owners could get fined.

The fine is up to $250, but judges generally don’t impose anywhere near that, and cases sometimes get dismissed, he said.

Animal control generally goes after chickens only when someone complains, he said.

“Usually if a complaint comes in, it’s because they’re letting them run loose or a new neighbor comes in,” he said.

Marak takes no position on the controversy other than to note that strong forces are in play.

“There’s nothing better than a fresh egg,” he said.

UPDATE:

Urban chicken update: Planning Commission approves test permit

Urban chickens have their beaks in the suburban door.

In a victory for chicken supporters, the Overland Park Planning Commission on Monday afternoon voted to grant two brothers a test permit to raise chickens.

The special-use permit goes before the City Council on June 1 for a final decision on whether David and Bill Crupper can have four chickens at a residence on West 95th Terrace

The 7-4 Planning Commission vote came after split testimony from neighbors. The permit would last only one year.

Four years ago, the City Council voted down the last attempt by a family to get a permit for chickens.

But Plan Commissioner Michael Flanagan said the city and society have changed much since then.

“Four years ago I didn’t Twitter,” he said, “but I do now.”

BROOKSIDE - The Community Farmers Market at Brookside (KCMO) - for Market Day (SATURDAY) May 9th, 2009

Greetings Market Friends,

Let the sun shine in! Finally, a bright ray of sun after all the rain. I think it will be a great weekend. We have a whole host of activities at the market this weekend. It is the Annual Herb Festival. Our vendors will have plenty from which to choose, as you will read below. It is also Mothers’ Day weekend. We have lots of great choices for gifts for mom. If my mother lived here, I just know she would love to receive a beautiful hanging basket filled with organic flowers—and I bet your mom would too. So, don’t disappoint her, and make sure you stop by to pick one up Saturday!

For your listening pleasure, we will feature Shindig—a duo comprised of local Brookside musicians, Doug Osburn and Benito Berado. I am excited to hear what sort of tunes they have be kickin’. Also I have been told that there is a strong possibility of appearances by balloon artist Greg Keller and Ziggy, a hoop (yes, hula hoop) dancer and studio instructor. So, it should be quite the action packed day at market.

Something else new this year, is that I am interested to get recipes from any of you who might want to share a recipe with the rest of the readers of the market newsletter. Keep in mind that the recipes should be for ingredients in season and that you can buy at our market. Please do share your secrets for how you make our market treasures tantalizing to the taste buds :) Send your recipes along with your name and a telephone number or e-mail address where you can be reached to franki@farmerscommunitymarket.com. And don't worry, your contact information will not be shared with anyone or up for purchase by any other list.

As always, we look forward to seeing you every Saturday in the heart of Brookside at 63rd and Wornall from 8 a.m to 1 p.m. Also check us out at www.farmerscommunitymarket.com

See you Saturday!

Franki

Now from our vendors ….

From Bear Creek Farms:

Anyone know where the sun is? If so please send it my way! All the plants in the fields just sit and wait, and it's too muddy to do any planting so we are getting more than a little frustrated. Ah, but once it does start shining we are going to be happy farmers - and busy!

This week we will again be bringing lots of transplants for your gardens. The summer squash plants are ready so we'll have zucchini, yellow zucchini and patty pan squash starts along with tomatoes, peppers, herbs and more.

And we'll have asparagus, head lettuce, green onions, bok choi and kale - if we can wade through the fields to pick! Regardless - we'll see you all Saturday!

Robbins and Jim

From Blue Door Farm:

This week certainly started off well. My field plantings are just starting to wake up and realize it is spring. Nothing like a little sunshine to warm things up.

I will return with more swiss chard (thanks to all of you who complimented it last week!), as well as super crisp, refreshing pac choi heads. The smaller red choi is beautiful and the large joi choi heads are my absolute favorite for stir fry or raw snacking.

I'll also be bringing more of the ever popular spring garlic, salad and lettuce mixes, mild french breakfast radishes, garlic chives, and an abundance of head lettuce in all shapes, sizes and colors. The romaine heads should be ready this week, so prepare for Caesar salad. I had many requests for spinach last week, and will try to bring more bagged spinach, but the wet spring has not been kind to the spinach plants and I fear I will not be having the large spinach bunches I had last year. We shall see though - plants do have the great habit of growing. :)

I hope everyone takes a moment to appreciate your Mom this coming Sunday. I certainly do - mine was nice enough to wake at 5 am the last two Saturdays and help me at market. Thanks Mom!

If your mom is a flower or gardening fan, come by and see Blue Door's bright nasturtiums, pretty violas and flavorful herb transplants. Basil, thyme, chives, savory and more are waiting patiently for good homes in herb gardens everywhere. Vegetable transplants, including tomatoes and peppers, are also available.

Hope to see you Saturday!

Laura

From the KC Center for Urban Agriculture:

Well, what a nice change from last week. Before more rains will hit later this week, our fields had some time to dry up a little, and Alicia was even able to till some beds for planting. Tuesday was a gorgeous day to be outside and we had a group of volunteers from Associated Youth Services and Key Bank over here. They got down to business and helped us spread some compost, pull weeds, move straw bales heavy from being soaked with water. What a great help, and WE THANK THEM. And many thanks, of course, to Alicia who manages the work and people flow so expertly here at KCCUA.

This weekend we look forward to sharing some of the fruits of all this labor with you. The forecast is great for Saturday, so plan on coming out! On our tables you'll find more tasty root veggies like TURNIPS, BEETS, and CARROTS. We'll have SCALLIONS and RADISHES; beautiful HEAD LETTUCE and CHINESE CABBAGE. We'll also have our usual bagged greens like SPINACH, ARUGULA, LETTUCE and SPRING MIX. And at the other end of our booth we'll round it out with bunches of KALE, SWISS CHARD, CHINESE BROCCOLI and lovely fresh-cut HERBS (chives, garlic chives, rosemary, mint, tarragon and more).

There'll also be transplants of all kinds. Lots of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and also cool season crops like kale, chard and cabbage and some herbs for your kitchen garden, so get ready to plant your garden.

As always, we look forward to seeing you and thank you for your support.

Katherine, and the rest of the fine crew

From Wells Family Farm:

Good Day Green Folks!

We are having a sale on Roast this weekend. Chuck roast to be exact! There are many options for this cut and there is a lot of it! We are expecting to be able to pick up our new stock this week, so will (or should) have all our cuts available. I have a fun treat to bring
along, art from the farm! A bit of whimsy you might say.

See you all Saturday,

Kim & Sharon

From Puddin’ Head Coffee:

Hello all,

Last Saturday was a fun market with all the extra traffic and met lots of new coffee lovers. This week we will have our Rainforest Blend, Ethiopia decaf and a new Peru coffee for sampling. Also some of our Blue Nile Blend for sale also.

See you there!

George and Vicki Hartman, Puddin' Head Coffee

Thanks to all of you who made it out to our market opening last Friday night! Between all of us local food producers, the hoard of smiling customers, and the savored sounds of Checkered Past, we had a truly packed house. What a welcoming for all of this season's new vendors!

Well, its already time for another market for us BADSEEDs. If you didn't get a chance to meet the new cast of characters last week, come down and see the spectacle for yourselves. If you saw us last week, you know that this place is worth making into a habit. As I said to the person who told me they were using large exotic cats to keep their bamboo at bay, its weird.

This week promises a bit more good food than last week. Our baker apologizes profusely for his unexpected absence last week, and has promised to bring his delightful bread this week. We'll be getting more of that amazing feta cheese from Goatsbeard (The best feta that Brooke or I have ever tasted, including in Greece). And despite our farms being deeply mired in mud and muck, us crazy farmers will harvest a bit more than last week. Here's what our producers had to say:

Herb'n Gardener
Lew Edminsterr
Summit & Belleview on the West Side

i got abuncha green garlics, some not so very much sorrel, some fresh harvested eyetalian basil and a buncha bunches chives and that's no jive. transplants will be considerably less that last week. oh, and don't forget, my charming personage.

Platte Prairie Farms
Steve Mann
North KCMO

Steve will have his huge sweet potatoes this week, along with spinach and bamboo shoots, black raspberry plants, summer squash babies, kamut grass (trays and shots), and a selection of BULK Organic Grains including brown rice, oatmeal, raw almonds, raisins, and sprouting seeds. Yumm!

Brooke Salvaggio and Daniel Heryer
West Bannister Neighborhood of KC

Brooke and I will have more succulent bags of BABY SPINACH, our deluxe SALAD MIX with edible flowers, the ever-longed-for STIR-FRY MIX, magnificent bunches of LEMON SORREL, and bunched HERBS like tarragon and chives. We will also have more plants for sale that will allow you to grow brilliant stuff on your own, including a selection of HEIRLOOM TOMATO PLANTS, eggplant, and countless herbs and flowers for the garden.

Sherri Harvel
19th & College St.

Sherri will have sweet radishes, greens and a variety of transplants for your garden. She might also have some other stuff she's not telling us about...

George and Vicki Hartmann
Kansas City, MO

Hi all you coffee lovers. Thanks for making our first night a success. We were overwhelmed by the customers wanting to buy cups of coffee and apologize for running out of coffee by the cup. That has never happened before and we just didn't anticipate the crowds for the summer. Not that we're complaining!

This Friday we will have our usual Rainforest Blend, Ethiopia decaf and a new Peru for you to sample in our pots. Some Blue Nile Blend will also be on hand for sale. See you there! George and Vicki Hartman.

Chris Glenn of Cafe Europa
KCMO

Incredible sourdough breads made from wild local yeasts and local/organic wheat flour, as well as loaves incorporating organic quinoa, cornmeal and spelt.

DON'T FORGET, we will also have Missouri's own fantastic hard, soft, and flavor-filled
LOCAL GOAT CHEESES from GOATSBEARD
and FREE RANGE EGGS from Alice and Marvin of Wellington, MO

So come down, support your growers, and if you BYOB, bring some extra Boulevard for us, too, would ya?

Farmers' Community Market at Brookside -- for Market Day: May 2, 2009

Greetings Market Friends,

April showers bring May flowers. I learned that in grade school, and I hang on to that hope as we tough out the rainy week. Saturday, however, is supposed to be rain free. And it will make a great day for checking out the market to see what new treasures spring has given us. Also, the Brookside Annual Art Fair is this weekend. So, make a day of it and peruse the art and shop for your organic goodies. Just keep that in mind as you plan your driving route and parking this Saturday.

This week we will have another special treat: The zoo will be at the market tent this weekend talking about their efforts to preserve wildlife for future generations, and how you all can get involved. They will be handing out literature about the Zoo and its mission here in the Kansas City area. Good stuff.

As always, we look forward to seeing you each Saturday at 63rd and Wornall from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visit us on the web at www.farmerscommunitymarket.com

See you Saturday!

Franki

Now from our vendors ...

From Bear Creek Farms:

Another wet week here but lots of signs of summer headed our way. The quail have started their bob-whiting, the bull frogs are in full chorus, the turtles are crossing the roads, and the lilacs are in full bloom - and full smell! The only worrisome thing - other than having fields too wet to farm - is that the whip-poor-wills have yet to arrive and usually they are here on the 14th of April. I wonder where they might have gone.

And - tis the time to plant tomatoes! We'll bring lots to the market. As always we are growing hundreds of varieties of heirloom tomato plants, so you'll have many to choose from - orange, yellow, red, pink, purple, black, green and striped. Nothing says summer quite like your own home grown sun-warmed tomato!

Along with plants we'll have asparagus, leeks, green onions and rhubarb. It's not a lot, but soon things will dry up and there will be a bounty of fresh vegetables at market!

See you all Saturday,
Robbins and Jim

From Blue Door Farm:

If only I had decided to grow umbrella plants this season, I'd be in clover. :)

Saturday is looking good though - so I'll be at market this Saturday with salad mix, more lovely swiss chard, golden frill mustard bunches, red (and green!) head lettuce, garlic chives (the perfect addition to scrambled eggs) and, best of all: the first of the spring garlic!

I'll also be back with more herb, vegetable and flower transplants for your garden, yard and patio. The nasturtiums won't stop blooming and I'll have more colorful hanging baskets. Gardeners - now is the time to plant those tomatoes, basil, peppers and eggplants! If you haven't planted your broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage or then hop to - spring is underway and hot summer days are just around the corner.

Hope to see you Saturday!

Laura

From Bread of Life Bakery:

Hello Brookside Market,

We are in hopes of no rain this week but the forecast does not look good for Josiah to plant. The rain seems to keep coming. Maybe the rain will not come on Saturday at least.

Josiah will be bringing eggs this week since he will be able to sell at Brookside Market this year. We are raising a new batch of chickens to add or replace some of our old ones. Every March we love to get new chicks and raise them for our egg production. This year we will raise Rhode Island Reds, Delaware,Buff Orpingtons, Araucanas, and Barred Rock. It is fun to see the chicks grow and run around in the yard during the day pecking at the ground and chasing each other.

Thankfully the rain does not hinder our baking much, we just have to compensate for change of weather on the bread in other ways. This week we will have Vegan Brownies, Pretzels, Vegan Scones, Vegan Crumb Cakes, Cookies, and assorted breads. Asiago Spinach Cheese bread is great with a salad or a bowl of homemade soup. Our Meat Burritos will have Benedict Builders sausage, potaotes, onions and our farm fresh eggs. The Vegetarian Burritos will feature spinach and potato.

Come by and warm up with a cup of Puddin' Head Coffee. And say "Hi" to Luke and Chris.

Luke, Chris and Kathy

From the KC Center for Urban Agriculture:

Fish farming. We’re thinking about fish farming. And maybe rice. We’ve heard that rice grows well in big puddles of water like we’ve got at the bottom of our field. Alternatively, we could open up a spa that specializes in herbal mud wraps. Mmmmm, I bet running a spa is a much mellower activity than beating back the weeds in June.

On the other hand, rainbow chard is much lovelier than rainbow trout. I prefer my herbs chopped into a nice spring salad. And nobody eats better than a vegetable farmer, so I guess it is all a moot point. We’re vegetable farmers, for good, bad, and everything in between, so don’t come to the market looking for KCCUA fish, but do come looking for our spring veggies!

The harvest list is long- but I want to start out with the BROCCOLI RAAB. If you think of raab as being bitter, think again. These greens are wonderful. They will wake up your palate after a long winter of grocery store vegetables. Our SPRING MIX is also a delight, I’ve been eating huge bowls of it every night, with a bit of grated cheese and hard-boiled local eggs. And we’ve got CARROTS (we’ll harvest more this week so we don’t run out by 9:00) and BEETS and SCALLIONS and RADISHES and SWISS CHARD and KALE and ARUGULA (ditto on the harvesting more) and nice new baby TURNIPS. And we’ll have the first harvest of CHINESE BROCCOLI, a small heading broccoli that is great eating.

Oh, and we’ll have Oak Ridge Farm’s Shiitake Mushrooms, too! Alan said they are exploding out of the mushroom logs, with all this rain, and they are good-good.

Transplants- we have lots of plants that are just ready to get out into your home gardens. Tomatoes (we’ve got some really nice ones in gallon pots) and peppers and eggplant and herbs and more. We know the weather is going to dry up next week, so we’ll all be out madly planting to try to catch up. (What is the point of having the earliest tomatoes on the block if it is August??) Come and have faith that spring and summer will soon be here, and we’ll all be eating ripe tomatoes with a dash of salt and crunching our teeth through beautiful peppers!

See you Saturday,

Katherine, and the rest of the fine crew

From Wells Family Farm:

Hi Everybody,

Well I am not sure when we will dry out but it sure is growing around us. Beautiful and green as only spring can be! We will be at market on Saturday with our nutritious beef, Diatomaceous earth, soybeans (dried) and red clover/burdock seeds. Then to keep you out door time pleasant, our bug repellant, made with natural cold pressed oils and mineral oil really does work. And it has a pleasing scent to men and women both.

Come see us and enjoy a great day out with your local farmers.

Kim & Sharon

From Green Dirt Farm:

So much rain! In a few days the morels will be popping. The ewes are eating lush Brome grass and early clovers as well as new tender sprigs of nettle and locust and buck brush. Their forages give their milk and our cheese the flavor of spring. Come out to the market this Saturday and have a taste. We will have all of our aged cheeses and most flavors of our fresh cheese. We are low on lamb cuts, so email us if there is something specific that you'd like us to reserve for you. We hope to see you there!
