BROOKSIDE - The Community Farmers Market at Brookside (KCMO) - for Market Day (SATURDAYS)

Greetings Market Friends,
I hope you all had a great 4th of July. I wish the weather would have been better, but at least it was not so hot that we could have cooked our steaks on the driveway!
This week the vendors will have a grand supply of all the farmers’ market “heavy hitters” (as I like to call them)—squash, tomatoes, peppers and the like. I hate to admit it (as I like to say I am an equal opportunity vegetable lover), but the summer crops are my favorites. Check out the vendors’ letters below for more details on which of these you can buy and from whom.
As always we look forward to seeing you every Saturday from April through October from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the heart of Brookside at the corner of 63rd and Wornall. Also, check us out at www.farmerscommunitymarket.com.
See you Saturday!
Franki
Now from our vendors:
From Blue Door Farm:
Three cheers for the cooler temps and rain during the past week and a bit. The Italian broccoli has bounced back and I'll be bringing more to market this week. I know, I know, I said last week was probably the last week for it. Think of me a sort of market Scotty - the Star Trek Scotty - always swearing problems could never be fixed then somehow pulling it off in no time. Oh yeah... that's me. :)
In addition to the Italian broccoli, I'll be bringing a nice batch of tomatoes, both mixed salad tomatoes and a nice selection of tasty full sizers. Tomato sandwich, anyone?
The yellow summer squash is super tasty right now (I had a big plate of kale, tomatoes and yellow squash for dinner tonight). I'll bring both the squash and kale; plus German Butterball and Purple Majesty potatoes, garlic, sweet yellow and red onions, the first few sweet Italian peppers of the season, carrots and a few bags of lettuce mix.
Whew! Friday is going to by busy for me!
From Green Dirt Farm:
Summer is upon us and our milking and cheese making are settling down into a
regular routine. The "girls," (our ewes) are completely trained to the milking
parlor now and look forward to coming in for their twice daily milking. Our new
grazing system is beginning to show its benefits: we have lots of new native
prairie grasses and clover popping up all over (the plentiful rain we've been
having helps too!) This Saturday we will have a variety of cheeses including some
young Dirt Lover and Woolly Rind and some well aged ones too. We also expect to
have more of our Blue Bossa. And, of course, all of our flavors of Fresh
(including Rosemary- for all those of you who have been waiting for this flavor
to make a reappearance)

Check out our new Facebook page when you get a chance. We have photos of some of
our recent events at the farm and an album with pictures of Sarah's cheese making
trip to France. If you are not a Facebook subscriber you can view the photos at
this link: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=136582&id=114351336013&l=0315503c8f

See you Saturday!

From the KC Center for Urban Agriculture:
Hope you all had a nice Fourth of July. We look forward to seeing many of you return to the market this Saturday to share some of the very best, tastiest and freshest organic fare around. And speaking of organic: this week we had our annual farm inspection to maintain our organic certification. This is required by law of most organic producers (only the very smallest are exempt) and it involves an inspection of our fields, crops, facilities and production records. The latter takes the most time. The inspector looks at everything from receipts for seed purchases and organic input purchases to field logs, maps, planting schedules, harvest and sales records, etc. As expected, the inspection went well and we're happy.
For those of you who aren't sure what "organic" actually means, remember that it is a legally binding term that can only be applied to produce grown in accordance with the National Organic Program (NOP). Basically that means we don't use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, GMO crops, etc. and work to keep our soils healthy and alive. If you want more information, ask the farmers this weekend.
On our tables this Saturday you'll find an abundant summer harvest. We're so happy to have TOMATOES for you! We'll bring some of the best-tasting slicers, romas, cherries, large and small, spicy and fruity and all different colors... so get ready! Also TOMATILLOS, BELL PEPPERS, SUMMER SQUASH and CUCUMBERS as well as delicious root veggies like BEETS, TURNIPS, RADISHES and CARROTS. We'll have more FENNEL, and POTATOES as well as ONIONS, SCALLIONS, GARLIC and LEEKS. There'll be FILET BEANS and TRI-COLOR BEANS and tasty GREENS like SALAD MIX, MICROMIX and bunched KALE and CHARD. And, as always, FRESH-CUT HERBS including BASIL! YUM!
See you Saturday,
Daniel.
From Bread of Life Bakery:
Hello Market Friends,
We have enjoyed the extra help this week with Bryce and Lili helping at the bakery and at Brookside market with their cousin Luke. They love to come out in the summer and help at the farm, bakery and the markets. Bryce has been "picking eggs" for his breakfast everyday with Luke or Josiah, following the girls around and playing in the water with Gabriel. Brookside has been such a nice experience for them since the people are so friendly and supportive. It truly is refreshing for their family to meet such a nice community.
Our breakfast burritos will have our hens’ tasty eggs with some of the market vegetables, potatoes from Josiah's Garden, squash from Blue Door farms, Benedict Builders sausage for our meat burritos, Kale from KCCUA and onions. Our baked goods made with FRESHLY GROUND LOCALLY GROWN ORGANIC WHEAT will be available. The goodies we will have will be raspberry bars, old fashioned molasses cookies (made with 100% spelt), brownies, blueberry scones, honey pecan rolls etc. We also will have Rosemary bread this week along with Asiago Spinach bread, Black Olive and Jalapeno breads to have with your Saturday dinner.
Come by and say "Hi" to Bryce and Lili since they are working hard learning the importance of local whole foods and baking.
Kathy, Luke and Chris
From Bear Creek Farm:
This week has been so incredibly busy - but oh what we've accomplished! There is no longer a weed, a long piece of grass, or a tomato without a string. Well, maybe the beets are still weedie, but there is a light at the end of the row! We, on the other hand, are looking a little seedie, but things do look good!

This week at market we'll have the most amazingly sweet red, yellow and red onions, piles of colorful potatoes, crisp nutritious swiss chard and kale, zucchini by the ton, cucumbers, sweet crisp cabbage, and finally - some tomatoes. There will be lots of other things too - stop by to see what we've found.

Laine and his wife Lena will be manning the fort again. (Jim and I will be sleeping in and enjoying a slower day here on the farm). Stop by and speak a little Danish to them - and buy a bunch of veggies!

Hope Saturday is a great day!

Robbins and Jim
Lena and Laine - the best little Danish farm hands in Missouri!

Howdy Friends and Supporters of Urban Agriculture,

Wow!!! What a weekend. Thanks to all of you who graced us with your presence this Sunday at the Urban Farms and Gardens Tour. BADSEED Farm had over 350 people come through!!! That is truly amazing. The plants are vibrant and alive from all the attention and energy of so many enthusiastic community members, and my three usually rambunctious, dancing baby goats are completely wiped out from playing with children. Well, now with the farm tour behind us, exhausted farmers can go back to putting their full attention into growing luscious and flavorful foods for all you famished foodies out there. I assume folks will need to load up on local goodies for their 4th of July festivities, and I am pretty sure us renegade urban growers at the BADSEED Farmers Market this Friday (from 4:30 - 9 PM) can help you out!! Youth gardeners have the opportunity to explore urban agriculture in Kansas City, MO at the Troostwood Garden in Kansas City. Located on a corner lot donated for use by Rockhurst University, Troostwood Gardens is in an urban neighborhood.

There, a master gardener and ten youth work with Ericka Wright’s “Urban Agriculture Youth Program,” building their urban agriculture skills. They grow produce to sell at the Troostwood Youth Garden Market. Through the help of a 2005 grant from the NCR-SARE Farmer Rancher Grant Program, the Urban Agriculture Youth Program at Troostwood Garden’s hopes to in uence a change in youths’ lifestyle and at the same time improve their nutrition, environment, social and economic practices. Ericka Wright’s family started Troostwood Gardens on their property in 2000 as an activity for neighborhood youth.

“In the community I live in, we were the only house in the neighborhood with a swing set, so we had always kids in the yard. Many of the kids had low scores in reading and math,” explained Wright. “Most people enjoy eating, whatever level they’re at, and we  gured we could read a little, eat a little, do a little math, and learn together in the garden with the kids.”

At 41 years-old, Wright is disabled from muscular dystrophy, and values a healthful diet. Wright wanted to show children healthful nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle. “In terms of sustainable agriculture, our project falls in line with community. It brings people together in an outdoor classroom, and makes people aware of sustainable gardening practices in the inner city, saving seeds, and eating healthfully,” said Wright.

Youth begin gardening each March and continue working in the garden and at the Troostwood Youth Garden Market until the last vegetables are harvested, typically in late October. “We’ve found that the youth developed better self esteem. They saw the fruits of their labor and how their hard work had paid off…They now have knowledge of a garden, what it takes to have and build one, and team work.”

BROOKSIDE - The Community Farmers Market at Brookside (KCMO) - for Market Day (SATURDAYS)

Greetings Market Friends,

I will keep the small talk short, as I have a lot to report in the way of market features this weekend. Yes, it’s hot, but you still need to eat, so come on down and pick up some crisp, fresh veggies for snacking. For those of you who can take the heat, we also have great cuts of meat for grilling. But like I said, I have lots to report, so on with the show.

This week is the Flower Festival, and we have some special guests. First, the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired will be on hand selling their new cookbook – Taste of Kansas City II. Proceeds from the sale go to help blind and visually impaired children. Buy a book Saturday to aid a worthy cause and get some recipes to put your market purchases to good use. Next, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art will be visiting giving out artist sketch pads while supplies last. We also will have a demonstration and information table on food preservation by the University of Missouri Extension Office. Come learn how to make your organic goodies last beyond the summer months. There will be music; Paul Cormaci, the musician that you heard last week will return. Nina, at the East Wind Gardens Tent will be sharing her "flower arranging techniques" with their lush, colorful, gorgeous, variety of flowers. Visit Amy, under the Red Bridge Farms Tent for container gardening ideas and purchases. So much to see and do!

Hello! I may make t-shirts to wear at market "I Survived the Kansas Tropics."

Fresh from my steamy fields this week:

Italian Broccoli

German Butterball Potatoes

Winterbor Kale

Yellow Summer Squash (Yeah! The squash season has begun!)

Scallions

Garlic (fresh dug, so use quickly or ask me about curing to store)

Onions (Two new varieties for me - "Desert Sunrise", which is a fairly mild, flat, red onion and "Sweet Spanish", a yellow)

And for the super early birds there may be a few tomatoes!

See you Saturday (and hopefully Sunday too - come see me on the Urban Farms and Gardens Tour)!

- Laura

From Bear Creek Farm:

Wow - only one big rain this week. That was great! Of course the heat was another issue! This farming thing is such fun!

It's been a busy week with lots of stringing tomatoes, harvesting massive amounts of cabbage and other such goodies, and just generally working our tails off. We've been pulling onions - they are huge and so beautiful. Guess all this rain has been good for something. Potatoes are sizing up and some tomato plants are absolutly loaded.

This week at market we'll have loads of cabbage, cauliflower, onions, 7 or 8 varieties of potatoes, broccoli, more cabbage, shallots, and piles of other wonderful vegetables fresh from our fields to your tables. Life is good!

See you all Saturday - or at least Jim and Laine will.

Robbins and Jim
Laine

From the KC Center for Urban Agriculture:

Hey market fans!

Summer is here and is bringing many gifts. So, in this heat the TOMATOES are ripening! Yes! And the GREEN BEANS are perfect! GARLIC fresh from the field and delicious! We’ll also have many varieties of SUMMER SQUASH and CUCUMBERS. Thanks to the nice rains of spring, our NEW POTATOES are crisp and full of flavor. Also, thanks to the spring rains, our root crop from the field is slow…TURNIPS are looking good and we’ll bring along all the BEETS and CARROTS we can find. Has anyone tried the Nero Tondo black RADISHES? Black and rough looking on the outside and crisp, white on the inside. Perfect for snacking, making slaw or juicing, and a great vegetable for liver health. FENNEL, have you roasted our FENNEL yet? MICROGREENS, SCALLIONS and LETTUCE MIX for your summer salads. FAVA BEANS to help you create a masterpiece. SUGAR SNAP PEAS for a special snack and SNOW PEAS for stir frying. We still have CABBAGE, SWISS CHARD and KALE, ARUGULA, BASIL for pesto and other HERBS, too.

Talk to us about the URBAN FARMS AND GARDENS TOUR this SUNDAY!

The event of the season!

See you Saturday!

Alicia

From Bread of Life Bakery:

Hello Market Friends,

The week has been a busy one with Bryce and Lili keeping us all going at the bakery. Bryce loves the cinnamon rolls and likes to have them around to snack on at all times. I think his Mommy is not totally for that. He will have to switch off with Potato Bread since he likes to have that shipped out to him in California.

We will have our market burritos, meat (sausage) and non meat, quiches with smoked gruyere cheese and cheddar, coffee(Puddin’ Head), rolls, bars and a variety of breads.

Have a good week and see you Saturday, Kathy, Luke and Chris ( Bryce and Lili )

Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - and an URBAN FARM TOUR UPDATE

Hello Eaters,

Now that we're past the solstice, we're turnin' up the heat at the BADSEED Market! All of us urban growers are gearing up for the Urban Farms Tour this Sunday. We are braving the heat this week, weeding and edging our beds, and trying to get things prettied up for the crowds. You've gotten to know us at market; now come visit our farms, including Root Deep, Herb'n Gardener, and BADSEED. Steve Mann will also be on the tour with Creekhouse Organic Community Garden.

Friday Night brings a special Urban Farms Tour edition of the BADSEED Market from 4:30 - 9 PM. We'll have Food Not Lawns at the market, sowing seeds in your minds about the abundance of food that could come from your own lawn as well as a series of Urban Homesteading Food Preservation demos!!! Schedule is as follows:

6:00 PM - Blanching & Freezing Greens (with the lovely, local foodie, Emily Akins)

6:20 PM - Pickling (water bath canning with Farmer Brooke)

6:45 PM - Fermentation #1: Kombucha "Mushroom" Tea (brew your own medicine with Farmer Brooke)

7:10 - Fermentation #2: Red Wine Vinegar (make your own with Farmer Brooke)

And of course, the Market will be stocked with wondrous fresh food from our varied urban farms. Come gather the growing bounty that we find in our fields!!

BADSEED Farm
1201 W Bannister Rd.
We've put on our workout clothes, and we're sweatin' it out on our steamy plot. What a whacky season! We love seeing everyone at market, but we'd really love to have you see our farm up close and personal. Come meet the goats and the chicks, and see what a big suburban backyard can grow.

This week at market we'll have more of our famous Stir-Fry Mix to be eaten raw or sauteed with your favorite dish. Root vegetables abound with giant radishes, tender turnips, snappy carrots, and buxom beets. Massive Rainbow Chard Bunches with electric color. Large leaves of Russian, Bore and Dino Kale. (Just a few, and just in time) Summer Squash!! From Brooke's new herbal tea garden, we will have Fresh Tea Bouquets with calendula, chamomile, lemon and bee balm, mint, catnip, and lime basil. Also, we have an assortment of culinary herbs, including BASIL, thyme, oregano, and tarragon. This will likely be one of the final weeks for edible flowers; take advantage of them while they are available!!

Herb'n Gardener Lew Edminster
"so it looks like this years veggie production is going to be dictated by the extremes of drowning and schorching. i know i'll have bothfrench filet and provider beans this week, along with some sort of salad greens ( probably arugula). zinnias love heat and i'll have another bigger batch of them for market along with some cosmos. thyme, tarragon and basil will finish my offering for market"

Root Deep Urban Farm
Sherri grows a wide range of vegetables that everyone can love. Herbs, greens, and (of course) tomatoes abound on Sherri's farm. We understand that she already has a few cherry tomatoes.

Platte Prairie Farm
Its a safe bet that Steve will have some mulberries this week, as he has for the past two weeks. What a delicious treat! Steve has a good assortment of the season's produce.

Also, come down and enjoy the freshly roasted and brewed coffees from Pudd'n Head Coffee. You can take a cup to go along with some sweets and breads from Bread of LIfe. EGGS and CHEESE, including FETA made from the finest goat's milk in the state.

Come see us, and learn some new urban homesteading skills this Friday Night at the BADSEED Farmers' Market!!

Sincerely,

Farmer Dan
