DuPont Leader Says Increasing Food Production a Moral Imperative

DuPont Leader Says Increasing Food Production a Moral Imperative

September 08, 2009

FULL ARTICLE:
http://www.topix.net/content/prweb/2009/09/dupont-leader-says-increasing-food-production-a-moral-imperative-2

- Ensuring food security for a growing world population is a moral imperative and plant breeders are being challenged to develop sustainable solutions using innovation that involves novel approaches and techniques to meet future demands, William S. Niebur, vice president - DuPont Crop Genetics Research & Development, told the second annual World Seed Conference here. Niebur's remarks reflect DuPont's recently announced commitment to focus on meeting four emerging global trends, one of which is increasing food production.

'We know some will want to debate methods and processes, the science, or our motives; but at the end of the day it is up to us as plant breeders to do everything we possibly can to help ensure no individual goes hungry,' said Niebur.

Agricultural output will need to double by 2050 to feed more than 9 billion people, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This increased productivity will need to occur as available arable land and resources shift, remain unchanged, or in some areas, decrease...

==== COMMENT: ====

MORALLY IRRESPONSIBLE

Big Oil / Big Chem / Big Farm have sold us a pig in a poke. Since oil and gasoline (and other high-profit items made from fossil fuels, like fertilizer and pesticides) could be sold for a profit, these Big Business leaders have tried to tell us that "What is Good for Them is Good For America" (and, therefore, the World).

Now, the chickens have come home to roost. Food supplies are not meeting demand because oil people (people fed oil-grown foods from birth) have been bred (indirectly) and used as a growth commodity.

Let the profiteers feed the starving millions (projected billions?)- these oil people are owned by them, literally. Otherwise, the Big Business model (as described above) will bankrupt the world.

Found elsewhere on the web:

"If modern agriculture continues to follow the path it's on now, it's finished. The food-growing situation may seem to be in good shape today, but that's just an illusion based on the current availability of petroleum fuels. All the wheat, corn, and other crops that are produced on big American farms may be alive and growing, but they're not products of real nature or real agriculture. They're manufactured rather than grown. The earth isn't producing those things... petroleum is!" - Masanobu Fukuoka

THE AGE OF STUPID - a movie - PLAYING "soon" AT A THEATER "near" YOU!

http://www.ageofstupid.net/sites/www.ageofstupid.net/themes/ageofstupid/images/bg-footer.jpg

Sometimes it takes the emotional punch that only a big screen feature film can pack to move people to take action on a long term crisis like climate change.

That's the kind of emotional punch that 'The Age of Stupid' will deliver when it comes to a theater near you. We're proud to partner with the producers of this dynamic new film that will premiere in the U.S. on September 21st.

Find a screening near you and buy your tickets for the September 21st screening today:

http://www.ageofstupid.net/usa
The film will show at 6:30 pm on Monday, September 21, 2009. In the KC area, it will be at AMC Studio 30 in Olathe, AMC Town Center in Leawood, and Cinemark in Merriam. The Olathe location will be on an IMAX screen. Tickets are $12.50 in advance, plus a one dollar service charge, and are available by following the links

'The Age Of Stupid' is an enormously ambitious drama-documentary-animation hybrid from the director of 'McLibel' and the producer of the Oscar-winning 'One Day In September'.

The film stars Oscar-nominated actor Pete Postlethwaite ('The Usual Suspects', 'In the Name of the Father') as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching "archive" footage from 2008 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change while we had the chance? It takes viewers through a world-wide journey that explores the roots of the crisis and our failure to confront it in this fictionalized (but all-too-possible) future. Watch a trailer of the movie at AgeOfStupid.net.

U.K. newspaper The Guardian has called it "the first successful dramatization of climate change to hit the big screen." Find a screening near you and buy your tickets today:

"Most American schools are flunking out when it comes to how well they integrate ecological literacy across the curriculum. And many are doing no better than a C average with the idea that schools should be actively engaged in sustaining the natural and social communities in which schools exist.

Fritjof Capra, cofounder of the Center for Ecoliteracy, and leaing environmental educators Cheryl Charles and David Orr explore what's working for the A+ schools that are successfully integrating ecological awareness, understanding and practices through the curriculum and the community."

BROOKSIDE - The Community Farmers Market at Brookside (KCMO) - for Market Day (SATURDAYS)

Greetings Market Friends!

We're glad to welcome Bear Creek back this week, and hope you can join us during this incredible weather.

From our vendors:

From Bear Creek Farms

We are back - hope last Saturday was lovely for you all!

What a week this has been - fall is definately here, though 42 degrees August 30th night was somewhat of a surprise! And here it is Wednesday mornig - it's pouring rain and I am freezing to death. I checked the Farmers' Almanac for this winter and it said - "Numbingly cold and lots of snow". Now with the disasters of this summer I have been longing for fall (maybe even frost!), but the words "numbingly cold" just don't sound all that good! On the upside - the national weather folks are calling for a warm, dry winter. Hmmm....

So - at market we'll have lots of lovely veggies - just right for grilling - or, if it stays this cold - great for hot soups or stews. There will be squash - both winter and summer -eggplant, kale and chard, mustard greens - perfect for a spicy salad, okra, peppers of every color and size, potatoes and onions, cabbage, tons of tomatoes, and.... CORN - lovely and sweet, a real fall treat! (This is assuming that the coons don't get it first!)

Thanks to all that sent emails asking if we are all ok. What amazing people all of our customers and friends are! We were back in Indiana - my step-mom has appendix cancer. I thought that at least your appendix was safe, but oh no - there are actually five kinds of appendix cancer! Who knew!?

So, well dressed in our woolies, we'll see you all this Saturday!

Robbins and Jim

From the Kansas City Community Farm

So the end of summer is nearing, a beautiful labor day weekend ahead. Here at the farm the gears are shifting slowly, the rhythm is slowing down a bit and the sounds of activity, growth and emergence have turned into a quieter hum. By this time each season, everybody in the crew is well-trained and there's much less need for communication around how to seed, plant, harvest, wash, etc. With the slow-down, some kind of space opens up for us to see the whole a little better, the small farm system, the people and plants and animals that comprise it, the interconnectedness and the constant change. The next couple of months are a precious time of year for farmers, before the deep freeze, and our harvest embodies some of this end-of-summer richness. If you're like me, you can taste it. Savor it.

A lot of beautiful variety on our tables this week: More TOMATOES of all sizes, colors and shapes. The harvests are getting slimmer, though... A great round of FILET and TRI-COLOR BEANS as well as SUMMER SQUASH, CUCUMBERS, EGGPLANT and BELL PEPPERS (the peppers turn wonderful dark red, orange and yellow this time of year... some look like a sunset.. taste them by taking a big bite right out of one!). There'll be more OKRA and a new Asian cucurbit called "FUZZY GOURD" (mix between a cucumber, lemon and summer squash... it's part of a vegetable trial so quantities of this treat are limited!). Also several varieties of WINTER SQUASH and root veggies including BEETS, CARROTS, some RADISHES, plus several types of POTATOES. And from the alliums family, LEEKS, ONIONS, GARLIC and SCALLIONS; fresh-cut herbs to round it off, including great bunches of BASIL.

Fill your tummy with this wonderful fare and enjoy the big weekend.

Thanks for your support.

Daniel

From Bread of Life Bakery

Hello Brookside friends,

We got done with Grandmas' big move and she is partially unpacked and settled. I think she has made friends with half the town already (all 400) and she will know the rest by the end of next week. I do stand corrected though,Grandma never lived in the country just the suburbs of Independence and her parents raised chicks, chickens, eggs and sold feed there. I hope she likes all the quiet. Josiah will see her everyday twice a day since he checks on his animals that often.
Our burritos this week will have Josiahs' farm fresh eggs, potatoes, squash, onions, swiss chard and farm fresh eggs. Our meat burritos will have Benedict Builders sausage added to them. Quiches, muffins, breads, cinnamon rolls, cookies and scones will also be available. Bethany will have the Pumpkin rolls and Cherry Chocolate chip bread made for Saturday. The pumpkin rolls go fast so I hope she makes enough.

Well, enjoy the day and come by and see us,

Luke,Chris and Kathy

Green Dirt Farm

Hello all,

Jacque will be attending the market for me this week while I take my daughter to college. For those of you who missed getting some of our new cheese, "Queen of the Prairie," last week, we will be coming with twice as much this week (but do try to come early, just in case!)
We will have plenty of lamb this week, too. Though, no sausage yet, sorry.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sarah

Urban Farms Attract Tourists, Development and Community Attention

Urban Farm Tours:
Building a Network of Backyards, Rooftops and Abandoned Lots

urban farm

We really like the concept of the 2nd Annual Urban Farm Tour taking place September 12th in Carrboro, NC, for its rather brilliant simplicity. Build a network of pioneering individuals - vegetable growers, rooftop beekeepers, backyard chicken farmers etc. - who are raising their own food in limited space and open their homes and gardens to the public. An event that synthesizes ideas of local food and community with a bit of DIY inspiration and education, while opening people’s eyes to the potential that exists in their own homes. The Carrboro tour will also include hands-on workshops and coincide with a fundraiser to raise money to start an urban farm tool “lending library”...
