BADSEED's Funka-FIRST Friday FARMERS' MARKET at 1909 McGee (E. Crossroads, KCMO) 4p-9p

Die-Hard Locavores & Serious Eaters -

Happy 4th of July!!  I hope you are feasting upon sexy summer squashes grilled to perfection, heirloom tomato stacks with sheep's milk cheese, buttery sweet corn, basil-cucumber cocktails, and fresh peach sorbet!!  Mmmmmm....I LOVE SUMMER.

Unfortunately, we farmers don't get much of a break despite national holidays and all.  We keep our heads to the grindstone (picking, watering, weeding) so that you can keep your refrigerators full of fresh, local foods.  But hey, it aint that bad.  I'll feast when the sun goes down...(besides, I ate my share of heirloom tomatoes while harvesting this morning!!).

Speaking of harvesting, it was quite an experience.  My urban farm lies east of Prospect, off of Blue Parkway, sandwiched between Swope Park and the stadiums.  Neighborhood fireworks have been in effect for several days now.  The endless blast of M80's sounds like gun shots and I cannot help but jump every time I hear them.  All the same, the tomatoes and cucumbers don't seem to mind and that's the important thing.  The real fun will start this evening when the neighborhood will literally light-up with household fireworks displays.  This localized pyromania will be complimented by various municipal displays that can be seen from the highest point on my farm.  It's pretty darn spectacular!!  Farmer Dan, Percy, and I will lay out a big blanket in the middle of the field and feast upon garden morsels and homemade wine as the city explodes around us.

Well, enough about FIRE - let's talk FRUIT!! ...

INSTANT KARMA OPPORTUNITY (the GOOD kind) SOSA needs your help RIGHT NOW in Northern MO

It's hotter than ... well... you know... and that means you have an opportunity to make a difference.  Right now, today JUNE 27, 2012.

Gleaning America's Fields ~ Feeding America's Hungry
Karin Page, Gleaning Coordinator, SoSA West

We are still trying to save 4800 lbs. of zucchini and cucumbers that are in Trenton, Missouri (approx. 90+ mi. NNE of KC).  If you have a pick-up truck or van and can take 4 hours out of your day, we are desperate for your help.  PLEASE call me if you are available.  We can pay for your gas.  The zucchini would go to the pantry of your choice or you can take it to the St. Joseph Food Bank.
We will send directions if you are available - please tell everyone you know.  Due to lack of rain, we will be having serious crop failures soon.  These zucchinis and cucumbers are going to be precious for people in need.  There won't be anymore excess.
Thanks so very much!

The Society of St. Andrew is a national nonprofit hunger-relief ministry that rescues 25-30 million pounds of fresh, nutritious, excess produce each year that would otherwise go to waste for various marketing reasons. This food is then distributed to critical feeding agencies across the country at no cost to the agencies or the hungry people they serve.

BADSEED's Funkadelic Friday FARMERS' MARKET at 1909 McGee (E. Crossroads, KCMO) 4p-9p

Fanatical Foodies and Earnest Eaters -

Wow!  It has been mighty HOT and mighty WINDY these past few days.  The drought continues and we farmers are keeping our fingers crossed that the forecasted storms blow in this evening.  We need rain BAD.

Despite the heat, the URBAVORE crew has spent the better part of the week digging somewhere around 5000 bulbs of garlic!!!  (That's right, vampires stay the hell away from my farm!).  Believe it or not, the digging of the garlic was nowhere as strenuous as the planting of the garlic last Fall.  It was our first season in "no-till" vegetable production on new land.  We dug 5000 individual planting holes by hand because (due to the extreme drought) we were unable to dig furrows.  I kid you not, it was like chipping away at granite...the ground was that freakin' hard!!  Farmer Dan dug a number of planting holes with (then) 5 month old Percy strapped to his back, sleeping soundly...
