The hot summer sun is here now and sending a beautiful sunkist bounty our way this Saturday. Also, our Heirloom Tomato Festival is next Saturday, July 24th and we will have Jasper Mirable there showing us how to use tomatoes in great dishes from 8:30 to 9:30 am.

New Roots for Refugees
Imagine being uprooted from your home, fearing for your life and the lives of your family. You leave behind everything, but finally get help in a new country and find a new beginning. Did you know that New Roots for Refugees is a program that helps refugees establish new roots, through teaching them to start their own small farm businesses growing and selling vegetables? It’s a partnership program between Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture.
New Roots farmers will be back for another great week at the market. This week we'll have beautiful heirloom tomatoes! Yesterday for lunch I made a delicious grilled cheese sandwich with a purpley paul robeson tomato and fresh basil fresh from the farm. It was heaven. Oh we've got basil too! And cucumbers, squash, peppers, and much more!


Bread of Life

Hello Brookside,
This week we will have our California family here to help at Brookside.
Bryce and Lili have new recipes to try at market and we are excited to try them. Lili has a yummy, delicious vegan maple caramel popcorn while Bryce will make his tasty Honey Bee cookies.
Our sausage and egg burritos, egg burritos and Quiches will be available at market this week for your Saturday morning market experience.
Some of our breads offered this week will be Cheddar Cheese Loaf, Rosemary twist, Jalapeno, Multi, and Whole wheat. Come by and get your supply of bread for the week.

Bear Creek Farms

The tomatoes are exploding - we are eating them by the tons . The flavor this year is just outstanding, though we are seeing more scaring on the blossom end - a result of the blooms sticking to the fruit when the plants bloom and set fruit in cool weather. It makes me aware of how long the process is from bloom to tomatoes on my plate - seems forever ago that it was cold!

But tomatoes there are (we picked 700 pounds on Sunday, and now it is Tuesday and time to pick again - we pick every other day), and MELONS! - lovely Dove melons with creamy flesh and sweet! They are a short crop - this week there will be lots - next week only a couple and then that's it. The Sensation melons will be ready soon, but the coons got almost all of the watermelons.

We will also have cabbage for wonderful crisp cool salads, baby eggplant, purple peppers (SWEET!), freshly dug yellow and purple potatoes, onions (try the torpedos and cipollinis!) okra, fresh fragrant basil, zucchini and lots more.

Hope everyone is enjoying summer - seems it is flying by. Everything here is lush and green - 4 more inches of rain this week! So far we have had one day that we could wear shoes in the field - it is so wet we are up to our knees in mud! One thing about farming - every year is different - just when you think you know what you are doing it all changes! Keeps us thinking!

We are the pickling mecca of the market! Cucumbers of every size and shape, sweet peppers, hot peppers, squashes and garlic and dill! You supply the vinegar and the jars. Hopefully will have sweet corn (what the raccoons don't pack off), tomatoes, potatoes, zucchini, onions, GREEN BEANS, EGGPLANT, cut flowers, maybe a little okra, MICRO PEA SHOOTS!!!, cut herbs, ummmmm... what else... the last of the broccoli and cabbage probably, and a few herb transplants but they are about gone... see you Saturday!-Ami, Jim and Anna and Andrew

Troost Community Farmers' Market - at Linwood & Troost - Saturdays (KCMO)


Dear Loyal Customers:
Many peaches are fully ripe now. I can't even harvest all of them, there are so many. So I will sell them at 8/$1.00.
Carrots, straight and baroque are getting big and sweet. This is a great time to buy them. 4/$1.00
Fragrant herbs this week include rosemary, oregano, sage, bay leaf, basil, mints, chives, & lemon sorrel (aka wood sorrel).
I hope to start drying them soon for winter sales.
Don't forget peppermint lemonade and buffalo meat (frozen) and charcoal grilled bratwurst.
We are still waiting on tomatoes, eggplant and cucumber. I guess it will be August before we have any of them to sell.
