The installation of HAVEN, a working beehive sculpture by Jarrett Mellenbruch, in downtown Kansas City's 18Broadway Gardens, marks the launch of a planned nationwide honeybee sanctuary project. HAVEN operates in two distinct modes: as a classical sculpture that speaks to archetypal visions of home, and as a functioning domicile for its honeybee homesteaders.
Honeybees pollinate 1/3 of the human food supply, including many fruits, nuts and vegetables. However, their numbers have severely declined worldwide due to Colony Collapse Disorder and other ailments. While conventional beehives are made for the easy harvesting of honey by beekeepers, HAVEN is a whole new kind of beehive, designed to support the wellbeing of its honeybee inhabitants. And whereas commercial domestic honeybees are fed high fructose corn syrup, HAVEN's inhabitants will be able to keep and eat the honey they produce.

Thanks to the generosity of DST Systems and the efforts of the University of Missouri Extension, visitors at the opening reception will enjoy a cornucopia of foods made possible by and dependent upon honeybee pollination, from apples, avocados and blueberries to vanilla, walnuts and watermelon.
About the ArtistBorn-and-bred Kansas Citian and third-generation beekeeper Jarrett Mellenbruch studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design and has exhibited his work in New York City, Kansas City and Tokyo. Funding for HAVEN was provided by a Rocket Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation, implemented by the Charlotte Street Foundation and KU Spencer Museum of Art.
