Brookside Farmers' Market - FOOD * FLAVOR * FUN - September 24, 2011

Grill Festival this Saturday is a Food/Fundraiser for Harvesters
I don’t know what I’m more excited about… the grilled goodies from Chef Shanita; the Pumkin Rolls from Bread of Life; the green tomato pizza recipe from Stoney Crest; the Oishii Caramel Apple, or the bubble darts at Children’s Corner!

Did you know that as many as 66,000 people receive emergency food assistance through Harvesters’ network in any given week?  To learn more about Harvesters,  Baskets for donated produce will be with Pam at the market tent.  Volunteers arrive around 12:30 to take the produce back to the Harvesters donation facility.

Please, give Emery a High Five when you visit Oishii, for suggesting the Grill Fest be a fundraiser for Harvesters, and for helping with other planning for the event!  Emery – you’re a ROCK STAR!

Chef’s Demo
Shanita McAfee, owner of Magnolia’s Catering will be showing & sharing cuisine of the American South!  How does fried green tomato napoleon with Green Dirt farm cheese sound to your belly?  How about Sweet Potato Bisque?  Both are on the menu tomorrow and we’ll have recipes available.  There’s also talk of Garden Meat (Wells Family Farm)Sauce w/eggplant & bow tie pasta, as well as Orzo Pasta w/ Brats (Benedict Builders), peppers & green tomatoes!

Stoney Crest

Here's a glimpse of what we have in store for you this week: Radishes. "Sunburst" Patty Pan, Butternut & Acorn Squash. Sweet Candy Onions, Eggplant. Bell, Banana, Chili (Anaheim) Peppers. I have waited all summer for this weekend – introducing the Oishii Caramel Apple. Fresh Organic apples covered in the highest quality Oishii Cinnamon Caramel. In honor of the first week of Autumn I have created a new Apple-Cinnamon caramel made with pure organic apple juice and great cinnamon. This week at the market we will also have Raspberry-Balsamic, Amaretto, Sea Salt and Rosemary Caramels! We will also have two caramel lollipops Black Currant and Amaretto and the delicious Butter Crunch Almond Toffee. On the bakery side of things I will have our Traditional Scottish Shortbread, a new Lemon Verbena Shortbread, Lemon-Blueberry Pound cake and Coconut Macaroons. Don’t forget our hand-printed aprons, t-shirts and bags.

Welcome Autumn.
Welcome renewal and cleansing. Welcome cool nights and crisp mornings.
Welcome home and welcome back.
This week we’re looking forward to market and to sharing the harvest with you.
We’re grateful for the loyalty and friendship of the community that has built the Brookside Farmers’ Market to what it is today. We’re proud to attend and to set up our harvest alongside other local, organic growers.
This week we’ll have plentiful, beautiful and delicious arugula and perhaps the prettiest microgreens of the season. We’ll bring some Swiss chard and Funky Fresh Stir-Fry mix. We’ve got a new greens recipe, so check that out, too.
We’ll also have lots of sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, carrots and baby beets. A brand new crop of tender scallions, lots of fresh herbs and basil.
We’ll have leeks, hot peppers, sweet peppers, eggplant, tomatillos, summer squash and okra.
Come on out to the market. We’ll be grilling. Get your grillables and some fresh grilling ideas.
See you there!
