BADSEED Farmers' Market - Fridays - 1909 McGee St (KCMO)

Dearest Connoisseurs of Conscious Cuisine -

Man oh man......it is RED HOT out there!!  With Tuesday's heat index of 110 degrees, I'd say your local farmers sure deserve a pat on the back come Friday.  They have been toiling away under the boiling sun to bring you sizzling summertime "eats" straight from the dirt.  Imagine sweat pooling under squinting eyes, skin boiling on aching shoulders, and soaking wet clothing clinging to tired bones as these dirt-crazed fools madly weed beds, harvest crops, & manage livestock.  The days are long and the work is never done, BUT we live to FEED.... and so we shall this Friday at the BADSEED Farmers Market from 4-9 PM.  Eat or die......

PRESERVING THE HARVEST!!!

It's that time of year my friends.  The bounty is in full effect with a plethora of seasonal colors and flavors that can be "captured" and enjoyed all winter long.  Cool cucumbers and bodacious beets are screaming to be "pickled", while voluptuous peppers and heirloom tomatoes yearn to be "sauced".  Fill your cupboards with gourmet preserves, relishes, salsas, sauces and more.  Water Bath Canning is easy and we can teach you how at BADSEED's up-coming Cannning & Preserving Workshop -

Introduction to Water Bath Canning
Sunday, July 31st, 1-4 PM

Water bath canning is a versatile and EASY method of preservation & perhaps the most basic skill for the “beginning homesteader”.  Water bath canning is an effective means to preserve high-acid foods such as jams, jellies, pickles, relishes, salsas and tomato sauces.

Depending on the availability of produce, we will can two such recipes. The class will also include instruction on the safety and science of water bath canning, a discussion of the many recipes you can try on your own, and hands-on canning experience.

Leave this class with the confidence and knowledge to preserve many delicious foods at home in your own kitchen!

Cost of Class: $50.00

Local Poison: Keepin' it Cool with Cucumber Cocktails

The cucumber crop on my farm is OUT OF CONTROL!!!  Unfortunatley, Farmer Brooke has not been able to partake in the righteous harvest.  Instead, I have been cooped up in a house the size of a postage stamp with a new born baby and no AC!!!  Needless to say, I have been dreaming of cool breezes, white sand beaches, and refreshing cocktails.  I may not be able to give you the sand and the surf, but I can provide you with loads of delicious "cukes" this Friday and some AWESOME liquid recipes for Killer Cucumber Cocktails that will make you forget all about this midwestern heat!!

The following article describes some outrageous cucumber concoctions from savvy San Francisco restuarants and bars and includes several recipes at the end.  DRINK UP!!......  (and don't forget to have one for me and the baby!!)

Sexy Veggie of the Week

This week's runner-up is the righteously round Eight Ball Zucchini!!  The name says it all - this sexy summer squash possesses a perfectly round body reminiscent of a billiard ball.  They are similar in color and taste to your typical Italian Zucchini with creamy white flesh and a firm, mild-tasting disposition.  The best part about these voluptuous beauties is that they are absolutely perfect for STUFFING with all sorts of delicious delicacies.  The Sicilian in me loves to "stuff" so I have provided you with the mother-load of recipes and "stuffing" options.  Check out this recipe for Eight Ball Zucchini Parmesan.  For more ideas check out the Recipe Round-Up which includes yummy concoctions like Eight Ball Zucchini Stuffed With Veal, Celery, and Watercress as well as Rice, Basil, and Sundried Tomatoes.  The options are endless and the results are absolutely divine!!
**(veal can be substituted with grass-fed lamb from Parker Farms or Green Dirt!!)

This week's grand-prize-winner (drum roll please.....) is CRAZY COOL "Cross-Country" CUCUMBER!!!  This incredibly prolific "pickling" cucumber is crunchy, crisp, and incredibly refreshing.  Pickling cucumbers are my favorite because they are the perfect size for plucking off the vine and sinking your teeth into right then and there under the beating sun.  That burst of flavor and energy is just enough to keep a tired farmer motivated and moving!!  We harvest these luscious ladies between 4 and 6 inches which makes em' perfect for eating whole, slicing into salads, or even juicing.  That being said, as "picklers" their preferred fate is to be PICKLED!!  Homemade pickles are like heaven on earth.  I plan to go wild this year with glistening jars of crispy dill spears, bread and butter rounds, spicy gherkins, and herb-infused cornichons.  If you've never canned pickles before, it's EASY and now is the time to learn.  **On that note - URBAVORE will be offering "bulk pickling cukes" for home-canners at wholesale prices.  Respond to this e-mail or talk to me at market if you'd like 20 lbs or more!!!

Pictures are attached.  You know the drill....print them out, blow them up, and plaster them all over the men's room!!
