I know it is HOT....But let's cool down this Friday at the BADSEED Farmers Market from 4-9 PM with an icy treat :

Fresher than Fresh Snow Cones !!!

The lovely Lindsay Laricks (queen of the adult snow cone) will be at BADSEED this Friday shavin' up ice like you've never tasted before. Lindsay uses 100% all-natural ingredients without and artifical colors and flavors to create the wildest ice around. Maybe you've seen her around town in her groovy vintage trailer serving up snow cones dowsed in her signature syrups with flavors like "coconut curry", "blackberry lavender", "banana cardamom", "green tea pear", and "watermelon basil"......just to name a few. Well, this week she's embraced her inner "local foodie" and teamed up with BADSEED to create a snow cone straight from the farm!

Farm Fresh Challenge: I gave Lindsay a basket of goodies from my farm consisting of Green Sour Apples, Bronze Fennel, Thai Basil,Lemon Basil, and Summer Savory. Lindsay must concoct a local/organic snow-cone using these ingredients that will blow your farm-fresh mind. (I thought about giving her a big basket of eggplant instead, but I figured I was the only nut-ball that would enjoy an eggplant flavored snow cone.....maybe next time). Don't miss out. ***Sexy Veggie of the Week***
This week's runner-up is truly a phenomenon........ ORGANIC SWEET CORN!!!! OK, OK....don't get too excited. Organic sweet corn might as well be an oxymoron, therefore quantities are limited. Most organic growers don't even bother cropping corn due to the fact that these "kerneled kittens" are prone to outrageous pest pressure both from the insect world and the furry critter world. Beyond that, corn is a very heavy feeder and us, organic growers, are not dowsing our dirt in chemical fertilizer so alas...our ears are kinda on the small side. Other quirks include nibbled tips and the occasional worm (extra protein, right?). BUT, all that aside, chemical free corn tastes divine and is a real treat. Consider yourself one lucky duck if you manage to stash away a few ears in your market bag. One customer of mine lamented that he hadn't eaten sweet corn in over three years!! Despite his efforts, he couldn't find it organically-grown at any local market. Then he moved to Kansas City and (low and behold) sweet corn is back on the menu thanks to a few freakazoid organic farmers who think it is worth the hassle for that lovely tassle. Keep your eyes peeled for sweet corn during the next few weeks from BADSEED Farm, JJ Farms, and Bigg Blue Farm. All of us will have a little here and there, but come early!! Be sure to check out our "white" sweet corn in a mouth-watering variety by the name of "Silver Queen". My new favorite......

This week's grand-prize-winner (drum roll please....) is the absolutely angelic and juicy WHITE TOMESOL HEIRLOOM TOMATO!!! These sweet, rich, cream-colored fruits simply melt in your mouth as the juice runs down your chin and brings tears to your eyes. White tomatoes in general are considered to be very mild and sweet due to their low acidity. Eat these luscious ladies fresh, thickly sliced, and paired with tangy,fresh Chevre from Goatsbeard Farm or go wild with an all white heirloom tomato sauce that will absolutely make your head spin. However you slice em' and dice em', these fragrant beauties are sure to please.

monday morning i found what appeared to be a good amount of lima beans which should be ready or burnt to hell and gone by friday. we'll see. they sure taste good though all nice and fresh. be ready to freeze some collard greens. i've got a bunch of them along with a smaller amount of kales. anaheim peppers are making it through the heat and my sweet gnarly and knobby heirloom 'maters are still yielding, though much less. i'll have the great little cherry tomatoes as well. bring ice!"

Apparently the baby grass cannot thrive in these excessive temperatures. So - you will have to cool down with a smoothie instead. These healthful concoctions are made with local/organic produce and mind-blowing herbs. Drink-up.

Join BADSEED Farmer, Brooke Salvaggio, in a relaxing evening sipping “brew” and learning the art and magic of making Kombucha tea.

Students will take home their very own Kombucha culture and written instructions for care and brewing techniques.

*If taken good care of, your Kombucha “mushroom” will accompany you on life’s many journeys and spawn “kombucha babies” to give to your friends!!
