It is February for crying out loud! Can you believe we still have a freakin' Farmers Market going on?? That is pretty awesome. The fact that some of you hard-core "locavores" have supported us each and every week and stayed the heck out of the supermarket is nothing short of MIRACULOUS. Keep it up. On another note, it hasn't been easy. The weather has brought us down a couple times (keeping our fabulous farmers snowed-in) and even when we have had a full band of growers, many customers have not wanted to venture out into the cold on a Friday night. So yes, it has been a bit slow, BUT we are hoping all those "ethical eaters" will crawl out of the woodwork for the remainder of the Winter Market season.......WE ONLY HAVE THREE MORE WEEKS OF MARKET LEFT!! Then, as you know, we take a break for March and April (....Spring Planting, baby!!), and we re-open for the season on the first Friday in May. Holy Cow!!.....the season is really sneaking up on us and this pregnant farmer is nothing short of terrified for the insanity that will manifest itself come March 1. Man!! - sometimes I don't think I can keep it up. But hey, what else would I do....go to the supermarket??? Hell No!.....and you shouldn't either. On that note: I'll see you this Friday at the BADSEED *Winter* Farmers Market from 4-8 PM.
**(We are supposed to have a local news station present this Friday featuring our Winter Market. Be sure to make it down and "get on camera". Show KC that LOCAL & SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED FOOD is important to you!!!!!! The world NEEDS more small-scale organic farmers and the world NEEDS more "consumer-conscious" organic eaters. We exercise our politics with each and every bite! Start this Friday.)
A Few (trivial) Up-Dates -
(As stupid as it is, we had to do this for confusion's sake. Now that BADSEED Farm no longer exists (but of course BADSEED, the over-all business and market, still does) we had to correct the URL. Info pertaining to our NEW FARM, by the name of URBAVORE, can be found on the BADSEED website.)
......speaking of URBAVORE - things are crazy as always with the creation of our 13 acre urban farmstead. I know I haven't given a proper "farm up-date" in a while. I guess I'll just go ahead and blame that one on the pregnancy! I'm not quite as energized as I used to be.
In a nut-shell: We have been struggling with the weather. We have a million outdoor projects to get finalized before Spring (some were supposed to get done last Fall!!) and we have been sorely held-up. However, we are already back in the green house seeding for Spring production, and office/promotional work has been absorbing every other waking minute. In particular, we are working hard towards the implementation of the City's first Residential Composting Program!! We received a large grant form MARC's Solid Waste Management District and the MO Dept. of Natural Resources. Check out our website to read more about it. It is super-cool!! Another big item on the agenda has been the application and interview process for our 2011 Farm Apprenticeship Program. We are wrapping up the hiring process and our excellent crew will start March 1!! And then.......well, there is the "surprise" baby.........(I am being kicked from the inside out as I type this). He/she is a feisty little sucker, but we get along quite well. "The Bobbin" (as we fondly call the baby) enjoys tramping through the snow and feeding the animals, but HATES office work almost as much as I do. Miraculously, my horned goats haven't poked me in the belly once! Before they know it, a little "badseed" will be grabbing at their teats. It's gonna be wild out there this season.........
I promise to give a more thorough up-date soon!!!
Without further ado -
