Two weeks ago at this market, someone shared with us the anti-aging
benefits of Green Tea and asked if we would be able to make soap and
lotion with green tea.  So, we did a little research and the benefits of green
tea on the skin are amazing......second only to water.  Since I am
not a fan of drinking tea, I am especially excited with this.  You will now
find the Green Tea Body Butter and Green Tea Face Cream on our table,
and we have added Lavender Essential Oil which is also really good for the
skin.  The soap is still curing and we won't have it available for a couple
more weeks.  So, we are looking forward to the responsible person to

This Saturday, we’ll have the same great-tasting spinach, lettuces, and arugula.  Perhaps a few more cabbages, strawberries, peas, beets and turnips. We’ll be back with the freezer full of our pastured pork, as well.   We are excited about the new banner and shirts for the market.  Now, you’ll be able to recognize our stand from a distance!
We have been especially enjoying the beets and turnips the past few days.  Both are delicious raw or cooked.  Tonight, for dinner we will be having pork chops, mashed turnips, coleslaw, and goat milk.  Yummy, and we are so thankful for the bounty.
I thought I’d share a recipe for Turnip Slaw:
4 C pared and shredded turnips
2 diced apples
To make sauce, mix 2 T chopped parsley, 2 T minced onion, ½ C sour cream, 1 T vinegar, 1 T honey, salt/pepper to taste
Mix it all up and enjoy!

Next Week - KALE FESTIVAL!  Chef Renee Kelly of Caenen Castle has coordinated a killer kale cook-off!  There will be guest chefs and dishes such as Kale Succotash, Kale with shell pasta and sausage,  Kale Salad with Raisins and parmesean.  WE SAY YUMMMM!

The 2011 Urban Farms & Gardens Tour is coming up on June 25th & 26th with a
record 38 sites located all over the Kansas City metro area on the tour this
year. Tour sites - including urban farms, community gardens, school gardens
and urban homesteads - will be open to the public from 10 am - 5 pm on both
days.  Tickets are available online at www.urbanfarmstourkc.com and are $2
off until June 1st.

In addition to the tour,  there will be over 20 pre-tour events taking place
during the 10 days leading up to the tour. Events kick-off on June 15th with
Michael Ableman, farmer, author, photographer and founder of the nation's

Library (details below). The events feature a series of 12 "Get Your Grow
On! 101" workshops hosted by a wide range of community partners, three food

Funky First Friday Farmers' Market ~ BADSEED - Kansas City, Mo


OOOOOH BABY......there has never been a "riper" time for URBAN AGRICULTURE 
LOCAL FOOD.  For Farmer Brooke & Farmer Dan, this Friday & Saturday is the CLIMAX of our efforts as rebel farmers, agrarian urbanites, and community activists!!  We have been working towards this day since late last August when we began cultivating our 13.5 acre RAW piece of land in the heart of KCMO (right about the time I unknowingly conceived my child).  Nine months later (baby still in belly) we have transformed our blood, sweat, and tears into gorgeous fields of organic vegetables, an antique apple and pear orchard, chestnuts, peaches, plums, pastures full of heritage chickens, geese, ducks, and the list goes on....

It all comes to a head this weekend!!  Join your favorite gang of growers this Friday at the BADSEED Funky Farmers Market for a SPECIAL EVENT
  to honor our market and celebrate all urban farmers, markets, and food revolutionaries in Kansas City.  The festivities will begin around 4:00 and last until about 5:00.  The market will go on as normal, but get here early and don’t miss this special hour as BADSEED and all of KC gets some serious "locavore love".   The veggies will still be sexy, the food will be funky-fresh, and the farmers will all be friendly, BUT this hour of love will only happen once.  SO COME EARLY and beat the First Friday crowd to help us celebrate this special occasion!!!!

And it doesn't stop there...

Come Saturday, slap your sunscreen on, and join us from 2-6 PM at the 
(one of the largest urban farms in the nation just 5 miles east of the Plaza!!).  We'll be selling urban-grown goodness straight from the field at our weekly Farmstand and launching 

Festivities will include: LIVE MUSIC, FRESHER THAN FRESH SNOWCONES!!FARM TOURS, COMPOST Education, and KIDS Activities (baby chicks, geese, and ducks!).

Compost Program in a Nut Shell:

This is a FREE city-wide program that will accept ALL FOOD SCRAPS (including cooked foods, meat, and dairy) as well as limited yard waste (grass clippings and leaves).  These organic materials will be composted in large windrows on-site.  Finished compost will be applied liberally over URBAVORE's vegetable and orchard grounds and be "fed" back to the community in the form of luscious organic produce at our weekly 
  Farmstand which will run every Saturday, June-October, 2-6 PM.

It is our goal to utilize the city's organic waste (keeping it out of landfills and waterways) while meeting the demand of healthy, organic, whole FOODS that are hard to come by on KC's east side.  We will be making this food affordable at our weekly farmstand through the Beans & Greens Program which doubles consumer's food stamp dollars!!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST - Today, May 31st, is my birthday!!!  I am 29 going on 92!....(or atleast that's how my pregnant farmer bones feel).  Needless to say, I didn't get to celebrate today and I plan to drop dead come Sunday!!.....so our only chance to "party" is this Saturday at the Grand Opening!  BYOB....and don't forget to bring one for me and the baby!

Okay, enough already.....let's get back on track with our normal "farmers market jive".  Without further ado:



This week's Runner-Up is KILLER KALE in RED RUSSIANWINTER BORE, & RED BORE !!  Mama says "EAT YOUR GREENS" and chomping down on some oh so sexy, oh so hearty, oh so delicious Killer Kale is a good place to start.  Why you ask???  Well, Kale happens to be one of the most nutritious greens on the market with powerful antioxidant properties.  (stop spending those ridiculous dollars on California-grown organic blueberries at Whole Foods and get your antioxidant fix with a nice big bunch of local kale instead!!)  For all you "health-foodies" - Kale is also rich in beat carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, and calcium.  Get this - (particularly when chopped or minced) kale is said to contain sulforaphane which is a chemical that has anti-cancer properties!!!  So much for "an apple a day......", right!  How about a big bunch of kale simmering all sexy-like in your saute pan with loads of local butter and aromatic spices......mmmmm.  Farmer Brooke & Farmer Dan have a pretty wicked kale crop this year as do Lew and Destiny at Herb'n Garden so we should be able to supply your demand, folks!  Get it while the weather is cool......once the heat kicks in, kale kicks out.       

This week's Grand-Prize-Winner is the totally outrageous, utterly irresitable, radiant and ravishing 
Talk about SEX......this "veggie pervert" can simply not resist those succulent, giant, green leaves staring me down in the field with NEON multi-colored stalks in deep red, fuschia, canary yellow, burnt orange, and cotton candy pink.  These sexy beings protruding from the rich black earth are truly a sight to behold!  Just wait till you get em' home and into the kitchen.....that's when the "love making" really begins.  Rainbow Chard is a favorite crop for Farmer Dan and I.  We love growing it and we love eating it.  I will have a limited supply this week, as I want those gorgeous leaves to get really MASSIVE before I cut like crazy, BUT there will be more abundance in weeks to come.....
**For those of you who are new to preparing chard, here is a link to a nice, straight-forward recipe -  Rainbow Chard with Lemon, Capers & Parmesan.  However, just use whatever ingredients you have on-hand and don't be afraid to improvise.  For example, instead of lemon and capers use pine nuts and yellow raisins!  Have fun.

start with some slices of cold bulb fennel and tender young green onions. add to them some cilantro if you wish and load all that  on baby arugula (limited supply) or go to our arugula mixspice on spice, or soften it with green goodness, or make it even sweeter with soft sweetness mix.  there's plenty for you kale freaks and lots of tender swiss chard.  there'll stll be hot peppers and herb transplants as well.
