UPDATE & ACTION ALERT...

UPDATE: THANK YOU so much for making so many phone calls to the Senate Ag Committee. Legislative staff indicated to many MRCC members that they were receiving a lot of phone calls in opposition to HB 209. Nevertheless, HB 209 passed out of the Senate Ag Committee on Wednesday and is headed for the Senate floor.

Once again (and thanks to all your hard work during lobby days, and making phone calls and emailing legislators), HB 209 and SB 187 have become very controversial in the statehouse. Thanks to you the TRUTH about these bills is now part of the debate.

We must continue to make calls into the Senate and into Governor Nixon's office opposing this dangerous legislation.

UPDATE: HJR 3 is moving in the House and we should assume it is going to be in the Senate soon. HJR 3 is a proposed constitutional amendment that would take away local control from local elected officials and their ability to protect their constituents from the negative impacts of factory farms.

Senate Bill 187 & House Bill 209 “The CAFO Protection Bills”:

Written to protect Premium Standard Farms (PSF; owned by Smithfield Foods--the largest pork corporation in the world), the CAFO Protection Bills would limit the rights of family farmers and rural landowners to defend their property through the court system.

At the expense of Missouri’s independent family farmers, rural landowners and theirconstitutional right to protect their property through the court system, corporate lobbyists have convinced some legislators of the need to protect a very small minority of corporate industrial livestock operations.

* Please tell Missouri legislators: “Taking away the rights of farmers and landowners to protect their properties through the court system is unconstitutional and just plain wrong! Vote NO on Senate Bill 187 & House Bill 209!”

House Joint Resolution 3 & House Bill 100:

HJR 3/HB 100 would restrict the ability of local elected representatives to respond to the needs of their citizens through “local control”. For 8 years, family farmers, rural landowners and county commissioners have fought against attempts to take away local control. Hundreds have journeyed to Jefferson City to ensure that our local elected representatives retain the tools necessary to respond to the needs of their citizens.

Yet again this year, bills (HB 100, HJR 3 & HJR 17) are moving through the House Chamber that would strip Local Control and the ability of local communities to protect family farmers and landowners from the negative impacts of industrial livestock operations.
