Funky Friday Farmers' Market ~ BADSEED ~ Kansas City, Mo

Dearest Friends and Far-Out Foodies -

I am having one of those moments where I stare at the computer screen like a zombie.....typing a few words then deleting them.....typing a few on and so forth.  Everything I have written is absolutely incoherent and my brain feels like JELL-O.  I guess that's what happens when an exhausted & overwhelmed Farmer turned "mommy" is faced with the weekly challenge of coming up with something clever to say despite the fact that she hasn't slept since her 7 week old baby was born!  Percival is having one of those VERY RARE moments where he is simply content to lie peacefully in his cradle (out of my arms).  Therefore, the pressure is really on to come up with something clever and FAST before the "milk monster" resumes his usual behavior of nursing, nursing, and nursing some more!  The "cleverness" factor is further heightened by the fact that I somehow must charm you into supporting your local farmers THIS FRIDAY AT THE BADSEED FARMERS MARKET despite the unbearable heat.  I must convince you to abandon your beloved AC and venture out into the boiling elements in search of fragrant heirloom tomatoes, sexy summer squash, orgasmic eggplant, artisan sheep's cheese, free-range brown eggs, grass fed lamb and beef, raw honey, rustic baked breads, and herbal infused liquid elixirs!!!  Wow!  What timing.......our little friend has begun to stir and those "milk crazed" eyes are searching for mommy.  Once I am sufficiently drained, I will resume my pathetic attempt to arouse your hunger......

OKAY....the monster has been fed!  Well, I better get moving cuz I'm one busy milk cow.  I have a few items on the agenda.  How about we start with the BAD NEWS:

Heirloom Tomato Wars -

Some of you might be wondering why my market tables haven't been bedazzled with an unbelievably sexy and ooh so sultry selection of succulent HEIRLOOM TOMATOES in every shape, size, color and flavor imaginable.  Well, don't ask me.....ask the "devils in the night" (aka deer).  That's right - those relentless bastards have decimated my entire crop!  Off more than 600 plants, I've managed to get 4 cartons of cherry tomatoes and that was two weeks ago....(I haven't had any since).  They've also destroyed my pepper and bean crop (and it won't be long on the sweet potatoes) but those things are hardly worth mentioning in comparison to the tomatoes.  Let me put it to you this way - a farmer has two choices when it comes to "cash crops" - Heirloom Tomatoes or Marijuana!!  I didn't manage to get the latter planted, so I was banking on those maters'.  Without the income from tomatoes, Farmer Dan and I aren't sittin' too pretty.  More upsetting still is that the deer are also chowing down on our freshly planted orchards.  We are insanely fearful that we are going to lose our trees.  We aren't morons.....(we had deer protection in the beginning, but ever since our trusty "deer dog" and loving companion, Henry, was stolen the night Percy was born all hell has broken lose on the farm).  Frankly, I'm at a loss.  I feel like the integrity of my farm is being stripped away along with my spirit.  As life is sucked out of the ground we have worked so hard to cultivate, on the flip side, my beautiful son is flourishing.....growing bigger and bigger....turning all my heartache and sorrows into creamy skin, strong bones, and a healthy glow.  Therefore, at the end of the day, I'm just thankful - (scared shitless for my farm and livlihood!!) -  but thankful for him.

As for YOU - don't despair!!  Stan at Bigg Blue Farm has an AWESOME SELECTION of HEIRLOOM TOMATOES.  He picked 150 lbs last night and will do so again on Thursday evening.  Lew of Herb"n" Gardener will have some as well.  His are coming on slow (a few this week), but by next week he should have a yummy assortment.

In conclusion - While sinking your teeth into that sacred tomato flesh, keep Farmer Brooke and Farmer Dan in your thoughts.  By some miracle, maybe things will turn around...

The tomatoes may be shot, but the cucumbers & beets are in full swing.  URBAVORE Urban Farm will be offering organically-grown BULK PICKLING CUCUMBERS & RATED-X "TOPLESS" BEETS at wholesale prices for all you canning fools.  (15 lb minimum for wholesale prices)  Reply to this e-mail if interested...

What?? don't know how to pickle beets and cucumbers???  No worries!  Check out our up-coming Canning & Preserving Workshop and sign-up today -

Sexy Veggie of the Week

This week's Runner-Up is sweet & sassy, FRESHLY-PULLED ITALIAN RED ONIONS in Rosa Di Milano & Tropea!!
These glowing pink "mamas" are the cream of the crop when it comes to onions.  Rosa Di Milano is a rare Italian heirloom with high shoulders and shimmering pink skin.  Her voluptuous body is flat on top and tapers to a barrel-shaped bottom.  Her sweet and mild flavor is sure to compliment any dish both cooked and raw.  If she doesn't prove sweet enough, sink your teeth into the tantalizing Tropea!!  These long ladies are my absolute FAVORITE!!  They are Italy's most prized onion and are said to be one of the sweetest onions in the world!!!  What a title...
These elongated, red-wine-colored beauties originated in the beach town of Tropea, along the stretch of coastline between Capo Vaticano and Vibo Valentia in Calabria (a region in Southern Italy).  People travel from all over the world to the town of Tropea just to get their hands on the coveted onion and taste their famous Red Onion Gelato and Red Onion Marmalade!!  I've made the marmalade from my own homegrown tropea onions and it was simply out of this world!!!  Load up this Friday....cuz this Italian delicacy won't stick around.

This week's Grand Prize Winner is the one and only BLACK BEAUTY EGGPLANT.
This classic Heirloom dates back to 1902 and remains a standard world-wide for large-fruited, black eggplant.  With her voluptuous body weighing over 3 lbs (!!), this glossy-skinned deep purple beauty takes the cake, truly!!  I simply cannot get enough.  I adore eggplant, and grow 5 to 7 varieties depending on the season, BUT Black Beauty proves the most reliable and makes a Sicilian Eggplant Parmesan that will blow your freakin' mind.  Sometimes I almost pass out in the field when harvesting these bodacious beauties (seriously!!).....I simply cannot handle how truly exquisite each fruit is with their impeccable skins and smooth-as-silk bodies.  I've fallen in love and there is no turning back.  In fact (although I am out of the field taking care of my new-born baby these days) I made Farmer Dan PROMISE that he wouldn't TOUCH my coveted eggplant and would allow me to partake in the first harvest last Thursday.  Sure enough, as the sun was setting, I strapped that baby on and headed out to the field.  I passionately harvested eggplant into the night and it was nothing short of ORGASMIC!  You gotta try it....

Pictures are attached.  You know the drill - print them out, blow them up, and plaster them all over the men's room!!!
