The FOOD REVOLUTION will not be televised...nor will it be hybridized. Experience it "in the flesh" this Friday at the BADSEED FARMERS' MARKET SEASON OPENING from 4-9 pm!!!!
YES!! YES!! YES!! We are "back in black" my friends. And DAMN...we've never looked so good. Well - let me clarify - the VEGGIES
look good...(the farmers look like hell cuz we've been working our asses off!!!). I've never experienced a Spring like this one. It's one for the charts. Due to the fact that we never had a proper winter and early spring was HOT HOT HOT, the ground warmed up quickly, and the early season production has shot through the roof. I've never seen so many greens, roots, shoots, and PURE VEG in all my life. It's a freakin' jungle in my field. I'm not the only farmer "burdened" with an early onslaught of FOOD. All the area growers are up to their knees in green goodness. The problem is - WE ARE STILL IN PRIME PLANTING SEASON!! - how the heck are we supposed to harvest all this spring madness??? Well, let us worry about that. All you need to worry about is making room in the fridge!!!
Anyway, I better type quick cuz this crazy farmer needs to get back out to her field and start cuttin'! (I got lettuce heads the size of Cleavland out there...)
So yeah - VEG ROCKS, but it aint all about the veggies. They are simply a compliment to all the other
MAN!!! That's one hell of a list!!! When I type that delicious list of offerings it makes me PROUD to be the proprietress of the BADSEED. It makes me PROUD to know such hardworking producers of REAL FOOD. It makes me PROUD to be an organic farmer, and it makes me PROUD to be a part of Kansas City's (one and only) FOOD REVOLUTION. Remember - you are what you eat. Eat right this Friday at BADSEED.
Love, Love, Love.
(keep reading...there's good stuff down there...)

Sexy Veggie of the Week
For those of you who are new to the "BADSEED E-mail List", Sexy Veggie of the Week is a signature section of our weekly market e-mails. This is the part where Farmer Brooke selects a runner-up and grand-prize-winning vegetable from her field that exhibits "sheer sexiness" and divine decadence. Lush and graphic photos of the chosen veggies are attached, and their earthly bodies can be enjoyed "in the flesh" at that Friday's market!
Sexy Veggie of the Week was born out of a "shocking realization" I had about myself several years back. To my horror, I discovered that I was a bona fide PERVERT!...and not just any kind of pervert - a Veggie Pervert. I couldn't walk through my field without being hopelessly distracted and seduced by the swaying tops of my voluptuous beets or the bodacious curves of a bell pepper. I had to stop in my tracks, kneel down, admire and caress these heavenly fruits. In an attempt to diffuse my shame, I created Sexy Veggie of the Week as a way of cultivating "followers" and fellow-perverts.
So, without further ado, let the perversion begin:
This week's Runner-Up is the totally tantalizing EUROPEAN MESCLUN Gourmet SALAD MIX. This sensational assembly of heirloom greens makes for a tangy & BOLD salad that will blow your freakin' socks off. No joke. Light on the lettuce, this specially selected blend includes peppery arugula, endive, orach, mizuna, kale, mustard, corn salad and more. It is as delicious as it is beautiful. For those of you looking to jazz up a simple sandwich or "freak-out" the taste buds on your dinner guests - THIS SALAD IS FOR YOU. Go wild.
This week's Grand-Prize-Winner is the radiant RUBY RED TURNIP. What can I say...she's a sex machine!! All the other turnips in the field cannot stop staring at her perfectly scarlet skin enveloping pure white flesh. Her red veined leaves sway ever so gracefully in the wind and it drives the other vegetables MAD with desire. YOU MUST EAT THIS TURNIP! Similar to a radish, Ruby Reds have a crisp & flavorful disposition that lend themselves to raw eating. Slice these babies thin on a salad or dip em' in a cool yogurt dill dressing. They are also super yummy lightly sauteed with a variety of Asian greens. Originally from the Orient, these gals are a rare gem.
Pictures are attached. You know the drill - print them out, blow them up, and plaster them all over the men's room!!

OFFERINGS From The Lips of Lew:
" just for the record: in all the years i've grown stuff in the ground, i've never witnessed a season this quick and this lush! even though our market is just beginning, i'm having difficulty just stayoing up with the current growth burst. wow! that's about the simplest thing to say. this also brings me back to a persistent reality - i can still use temporary volunteer help for harvesting and weeding. a few hours of being in the dirt a week can get you a good sized bag of veggies.
before i get to the list of veggies, herbs and transplants, i am happy to say i'll be firing up the wood buring oven to bring along a batch of arugula pesto sourdough bread. time only allows me one day of baking a week, so amounts will be limited.
i have eight different kales in the ground right now and will be bringing generous bunches of blue scotch, white russian, red russian and rainbow this week. take it from me -they are scrumptious! therainbow chard leaves are huge, so are the bunches. there'll be plump and sweet radishes, flat leaf parsley and a limited amount of winterbor kale thinnings for salads. speaking of salad, i'll start with an incredible mesclun mix, my unique spice on spice mix and lots of first cutting arugula.
i still have an abundance of transplants - at least for now . there's a small amount of dill. but plenty of parsley, rosemary, sage, hollyhock, chard, kale, sweet peppers, hot peppers and tomatoes. "
