201105020 Funky Friday Farmers Market at BADSEED - EAT LOCAL FRIDAYS IN THE CROSSROADS

Fellow Food Revolutionists & Dirt-Diggin' Devils -

This is your utterly exhausted (and dedicated!) Farmer Brooke with my weekly dose of local-organic "righteous rhetoric".  The BADSEED Farmers Market will be bangin' this Friday from 4-9 PM with glorious spring produce, free-range eggs, grass-fed meats, artisan cheese, rustic breads, raw honey, micro-roasted coffee, micro-brewed sodas, and more!!!!  Yummy in my oh so pregnant tummy......

Okay, Okay.......

I am going to be perfectly honest with you (because my weekly e-mails are not in fact one big marketing scheme!!!).  I'm not feelin' the "food revolution" this week.  Sometimes the "agrarian dream" can blow up in your face and Mother Nature can kick your sorry ass!!  I am having one of those weeks from "farmer hell".  I won't go into detail.  I think the science-related specifics of my crop failures would only interest fellow-farmers or agricultural extension agents.  Let's just say farming new land with foreign dirt is no easy game and Dan and I are feeling like worn out mules without a hope in the world!  My "pastoral vision" is in the toilet right now and I just wish my damn ethics didn't keep from living an EASY American Life like everyone else!!

Alright.....negative ranting is officially over!!  Thanks for listening. (I needed that)

Anyway, on a more positive note, this Friday's market will be FRUITFUL and so will the FUTURE.  Read on for some TOTALLY AWESOME up-coming openings and classes brought to you by the "badseeds".  Mark your calendars and SPREAD THE DIRT

Class 1: Preserves and Jellies 101

*(water bath canning)
Sunday, June 12th,1-5 PM
Sweet preserves & jellies tend to be a favorite for most home-canners who take full advantage of the many seasonal fruits grown here in the Midwest, including strawberries, peaches, plums, apples, pears, and more!! There are many ways to make these spreadable delights and each “canner” has their favorite way. You can experience them all in this “jam-packed” class with 4 distinctive methods: using pectin, sugarless pectin, no cook pectin, and finally the old fashioned way of cooking the fruit and sugar down until it sets into a wonderful preserve.

Planned recipes (depending on fruit availability) include strawberry preserves, and mint jelly.

Cost of Class: $50.00

This week's runner-up is Tender Green Japanese Mustard.
This Gorgeous Green Goddess is not your typical mustard.  In fact she is a coveted heirloom crossed with spinach making her one of the mildest mustards on the gourmet market!!  If you like your greens, you will LOVE this one.  These flat, smooth, flavorful leaves can be eaten raw, steamed, or stir-fried.  Find these lovely ladies in big ole' bunches for only $3!!!

This week's grand-prize-winner (....drum roll please) is the totally kinky
French Breakfast Radish!!!!!  These glowing red elongated beauties have a splash of stark white at their tips making them quite the "eye catcher".  Their flavor is mild with a cool-crisp texture that is utterly delectable.  These radiant radishes are a joy to harvest. Pulling their 3 inch long, brightly colored bodies from the rich black earth is incredibly satisfying.....(only second to sinking your teeth into their crunchy flesh)!!!.  This will sadly be the last of my crop for a couple weeks, so make sure to snatch em' up now!!!

Pictures are attached.  You know the drill - Print em' out, blow em' up, and plaster them all over the men's room!!

They are never fed any grain, animal by products, antibiotics, or injected with growth hormones. We have been practicing Management Intensive Grazing since 1997. It is our goal to care for all of the livestock that we have been blessed with, in as natural and humane a manner as we can.  Our chickens for meat and eggs are also raised on pasture with green grass under their feet as much as the weather in this part of the world allows.  Our hogs are fed grain, but do live outdoors with dirt under their feet.  We do not use any petroleum based pesticides or fertilizers on our pastures.
