The 2009 Growing Growers Apprenticeship Program
is now accepting
applications.
is now accepting
applications.
The deadline is March 1st, but earlier application is strongly
recommended.
The apprenticeship program offers a doorway into sustainable growing by giving participants experience with day to day operations (work!) on area farms, plus access to workshops, farm tours and one-on-one training from their host farmer.
Apprenticeships can be paid or volunteer, and host farms are located on both sides of the state line, in many different locals. Our twenty-two host farms reflect the diversity of sustainable, local ag: from a sheep dairy, to an urban, organic vegetable farm, to a grower of native and heirloom fruit, to rural farms complete with barn, cornfields and cattle.
Apprentices too are diverse: from high school students to retirees, our past apprentices have successfully worked and learned - whether they had a background in farming or not.
There are thousands of books about sustainable agriculture, but nothing prepares you for farming like working on a farm. Both hard work and learning are unavoidable.
So if you, or anyone you know is considering becoming a farmer/grower, please send them to:
www.GrowingGrowers.org
or have them email: growers (@) ksu.edu
or call: (816) 805-0362
We have an informational flyer that you are welcome to print and post anywhere you think it might be seen by possible apprentices.
Also, if there are any farms out there that would like to participate as host farms, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Laura Christensen
